As a Smosh fan, I would like to thank Rhett and Link for taking care of Smosh for a while. I also love that Charlie is also being supportive about this. It's just so wholesome to see big youtubers support each other.
Smosh has been garbage tho ever since it was sold in 11. I remember having watched them as a kid and the absolutely hating them afterwards. I think the views also crashed and the channel stagnated in growth. I’m surprised it still exists at all... Too bad we’re not children anymore so I highly doubt we’ll enjoy the content again unless they make it for adults now?
The reason they were even able to purchase the Smosh brand is because Rhett and Link are literally amazing people and don't care about the money. They care about making people happy and I think they knew how happy people would be with this sorta thing
A thing that should be mentioned, recognized, and appreciated, is how how Ian stuck with the Smosh throughout it's ups and many downs. In Anthony's "I Spent A Day With Ian Hecox" he mentioned how for years he became numb and stopped having emotions(paraphrasing). He needed to go to a therapist to deal with a lot of stuff emotionally and psychologically from everything going on with Smosh and his personal life. He stuck with the company and the people working there. So props to Ian, very much a commendable person.
It's an interesting case cause Smosh was probably still profitable as a whole since Smosh Pit and Sosh Gaming are getting views on a very low budget. But, the main channel was not. So depending on the price they bought it for, it was an ok investment for Mythical regardless. Also they may still have a some stake in it.
@@chrism45 oh stake almost definitely, but probably not a lot of stake, Rhett and link aren't mega assholes, like imagine if the fine bros had snagged it, fuckin wild it would be
@@chrism45 The main channel is supposed to be Anthony and Ian with a supporting cast. If you put the supporting cast as “mains” and Ian as a supporter and Anthony gone, you’re basically asking for a shit storm.
Smosh got sooo screwed by Defy Media, which managed to burn through (grift? embezzle?) more than $70 million in venture capital before collapsing. Many of Defy’s creator brand acquisitions paid with “equity” in Defy (common stock not recoverable in a bankruptcy). Truly shady, lizard conduct. Rhett & Link are superheroes here- prioritizing moral sense in their business sense.
We all should be thankful towards Rhett and Link for everything. They not only saved the channel by buying it but, gave it back when they asked YEARS later. That's insane.
Nintendo Switch games I am excited to get after watching the Nintendo Direct: - Super Mario Bros. Wonder - Super Mario RPG - The 2nd Princess Peach Game - Sonic Superstars (Xbox One)
I am happy that for the most part people have stopped blaming the current Smosh cast and Anthony leaving as the reason why Smosh struggled for a while. It was Defy’s lack of empathy or understanding of what the original creators wanted for their company and overworking them to the point of a lot of what they released had no passion from who created. And this included the last years that Anthony was still with Defy era Smosh. Bottom line, as someone who wasn’t able to grow up with these legends as a kid, I’m grateful for being able to experiencing them as an adult. Here’s to many more years of Smosh to come💙
I think it's more than Rhett and Link being RU-vidrs and knowing the struggles. I really think it's also them just being genuinely good people. Yeah, I don't know them personally, but from what I've seen of their show, of their podcasts, and how their crew talks about them, I think they just want to do what they think is right. And I love this
I think it's important that Mythical Entertainment isn't public, they can do this because they probably don't care if they make a little less money and don't have any shareholder's pressure to only choose what's profitable, and they helped fellow creators that are probably their friends
All I know of Smosh is that they were big. So famous for being famous. That's it. Never heard anything bad about them though and reuniting is always sweet to see.
Lots of credit should be given to Shayne and Courtney and friends. They carried the channel AND stuck with it when defy dissolved. Wouldn't be here without them. Glad to hear smoshpit isnt going anywhere.
@TechnobladeDeservedItLMFAO damn minecraft is cringe and I barely know a thing about it But I hope you dont get pressed when I report your youtube channel anyway. You seem cool like that
Thank you so much, Charlie. I've been a subscriber to smosh ever since it started. They made my childhood and over the years along with the Ian and Anthony and the channel we've all grown, but man, does it bring a smile to my child self to see these buddies back together again.
I watched them back when I was a kid / teenager, used to love their sketches a lot back then. I'm 27 now and haven't really been following either of them for the past few years, but I am very happy to see this huge part of my childhood finally being mended. Best wishes to both of them 🥰
Ian actually talked about the conversation with Rhett and Link in an interview with Anthony on his channel. He said that they were just as excited as he and Anthony were, and that the business was secondary to them to the excitement of getting Smosh back in the founders hands
Some of the rarest RU-vidrs who managed to salvage a classic RU-vid channel that got caught up in that terrible craze of companies attempting to buy everyone out and failing miserably.
I’m super excited to see what Ian and Anthony do with Smosh going forward! Smosh was one of the first channels I watched on RU-vid. Just seeing the thumbnail for their announcement video with Ian and Anthony next to each other gave me a blast of nostalgia. I just turned 29 a few days ago and I still remember my best friend and I laughing our asses off watching their videos after school when we were teens like it was yesterday.
I was grinning so huge when I saw their announcement!! Been subscribed to Smosh and their side channels for years, it's like comfort food for me, but I've always missed seeing Anthony and figured that era was over and would never return. So happy to be wrong
I'm so glad the original guys of smosh came back. I remember seeing them in 2012 and I loved them. Also same with the grandma. She was very funny and she got me to laugh when I watched the recent video of smosh
Watched smosh with Anthony as a very little kid, and I’ve continued to watch smosh on and off still ever since, I love everything they’ve become and having Anthony back is incredible, SMOSH HAS SO MUCH LIFE
This is awesome, but the folks who constantly complained and got upset at smosh and the cast since Anthony left should be giving a big apology to them. It's great news, but it's terrible how they brought down the others and channel and crapped on everything they did when they did fine stuff and didn't deserve the hate and comparison constantly - including Ian who was heading the Smosh ship, who did nothing wrong and honestly the other members of smosh are pretty good too, along with their content. I'm hoping they still get a good spotlight, too, because current smosh has some great folks and sketches
I really hope that the rest of the smosh cast can at least guest star. People kind of got turned off when it expanded to so many people but to be honest there's a lot of talent there and they all have good chemistry at this point.
Exactly this, I can’t stand all the hate that the cast gets bc I enjoy their content. I’m happy that smosh games and smosh pit will stay the same with the smosh cast.
@@Syd448 it makes me so angry - it was every comment section almost on instagram where someone had to say they were dying or the old vids were better, when they were trying to move on and do their thing despite constant comments like this. And I wasn't around when it was ian and anthony, and enjoy the new cast a lot and what they do, and saw the old content as old, wouldn't fly on today's youtube, and people blinded by nostalgia and hurting smosh when it deserved a chance and has amazing people who I would argue rival old smosh in a number of cases, I think people just dont give them a chance, at least those people sometimes. The audience and channel changed and I think that people should have moved on or gave it a try for what it was instead of what some did, anyways. Obviously talking about a slect number of commenters but imagine how smosh felt seeing them pretty often just trying to do their thing. Now some of those commenters get what they want and even if they didn't bully them into it, some of those did and don't deserve this (they don't, not saying the community doesn't)- because they treated the others like crap. Now they're gonna claim how great it is, maybe even in vids with Anthony and the new cast, as if the new cast were bad but good now that Anthony is here suddenly. I know it's niche but it's annoyed me a lot seeing the hate the past few years here and there in comment sections on insta.
Smosh has been a part of RU-vid since the very beginning. It’s amazing that they are still continuing, and now it’s back to it being Ian and Anthony’s channel.
Dude when I saw the video of Ianthony anouncing, I had such a big smile my face actually hurt, just hope lasercorn, joven, mari and sohinki come back too
Smosh was one of the first youtubers I watched back in 2008 when I was 10. They're the reason I wanted to discover more on the platform. I'm so happy they're coming back!
You can get all of the context from Anthony’s most recent video where he and Ian just talked for over an hour about all of the stuff that went down. I still watch Smosh a bunch so I knew about the announcement but when I saw it I was blown away and so shook it was dope asf and hearing more of the details behind how it all went down was really interesting. You should give it a listen if you wanna know more.
The ending to their announcement video threw me back to early Smosh in just 30 seconds of Ian and Anthony's combined humor... Ians mom is a comedy powerhouse when these 2 guys work together.. So exciting!
This is gonna be a wild nostalgia trip. I really can’t wait to see what they do, even if I don’t find it funny just seeing some legends come back and make videos for the fun of it is something I can get behind.
20 years ago this time i was 18, freshly graduated from hs and was visiting my aunts now ex bf and his kids in Texas in my time on youtube, i never watched Smosh, I've only heard of them also i didn't really getting to watching youtube until 2007 and was really into watching those videos people would make with images of naruto characters to music and NigaHiga
I was in the bathroom about to take a shower when I saw the announcement, and then I was crying on the floor for an hour. I am so freaking happy. SMOSH IS BACK YEAAAAAH
I literally never stopped watching smosh, even through defy, the shutdown, all the new people that have come and gone, smosh has been a happy place for me as I’ve grown up I’m so happy for them and as a 25yo old man wear my smosh t shirt with pride
Talking about the being too early to make anything hits me hard. I used to work with PlayTheGame, an old zombies channel that rivaled NextGenTaxtics but we were a bit early too make money and the owner moved on to music full time.
I’m so happy for them! Anthony exploring his independence and business knowledge, and Ian separating his own creativity and independence from one of his closest childhood friends… this reunion is monumental. This will absolutely be a staple in how other independent creators conduct business, from her out. And I’m SO here for this evolution 🥰 Absolute props to rhett and link! A better platform to leap from, than _their_ lifelong understandings of friendship and collaboration, simply doesn’t exist… They’ve become thee new internet daddies, and I think we *all* benefit from both of these channels being free to exist. I’m glad I’m here to witness this 🥹
As an avid Smosh fan from years 2008 - 2014 I must say this was great news. And even though till now they released 3 short sketches they hit the mark far better than every content produced for past couple months and I know that I am not alone numbers speaks for themselves. 3 Videos have over 25 million views and average view count is 5 mil compared to their previous videos which were averaging around 1 mil. I mean some of those videos were funny like Every Home office Ever or Old Ian but none of them matched Food Battles, Real Death note, If Video Games were real or Ian Identical Twin or Paranormal Bake Oven.
Charlie! I have an important question! Where is the plaque that ODS made you? I would really like to see it hung up on that empty spot on your wall. Also we really need you to rate the "ball scratcher" that was a project with heart and soul put into it, and it deserves your rating. Thanks!
8:00 WOAH WALSHY (or however you spell his name) just opened a nostalgic wormhole. Thanks Charles. Imma go see if I can scrape up some walshy residue off my dirty RU-vid mirror and snort it directly into my search bar.
After the announcement I watched their new smosh pit ep. I have been watching smosh since I was 10 yrs old, this fr feels like I'm traveling back in time. I'm excited to see them back in action!!
Literally any Machinima creator. My favorite- Seananners- used to be a top channel on RU-vid and every video used to get at least a million views within a day or 2. If he blew up now with his commentary and content he’d be top tier still.
Even I knew things were going downhill once they announced their food battle game I don’t remember what exactly happened but they asked fans to donate money to fund the game but there was a long silence so fans became angry thinking they got scammed and when the game did release it wasn’t that great. They also had a movie that wasn’t that good and it wasn’t until way later that they revealed that defy media basically forced them to do it but they had almost no control so all the hate went to them despite it not really being their fault. I’m really happy that in the end they got their channel back they deserve it
