Deep within the gaming industry's tapestry lies a conundrum that perplexes both casual gamers and hardcore fans alike - the tug-of-war between expansive, sprawling worlds and the handcrafted, intimate experiences that draw us in. Step into the tumultuous world of Assassin's Creed Unity, and this debate finds its finest exhibit. For those who let themselves be truly absorbed, AC Unity unfolds as a piece of art, painstakingly detailed and brought to life. It is a game that chose depth over size in most of its aspects, and it is a philosophy of game development I wish Ubisoft would have used for the last three games.
Paris, in AC Unity, is not just a backdrop; it's a character in its own right. Every cobblestone street, every clandestine alley, and every baroque balcony isn't just there for aesthetics; they're threads in a larger narrative, waiting to tell tales of revolutions, love, betrayal, and ambition. There's an allure to Paris that's hard to articulate; it's as if every brick in its ancient architecture has a story waiting to be told. As a player, I'd rather traverse these smaller, meticulously crafted worlds than roam vast, repetitious terrains that fail to resonate on a deeper level. It's baffling that more games don't embrace this 'less is more' philosophy.
Unity, despite its technical misgivings, is like that intriguing novel with smudged ink and a few torn pages, but a plot that leaves you spellbound (never will this refer to the actual campaign, but the world itself and the stories you tell yourself because of it). It’s strange, how in the grand tapestry of the Assassin’s Creed universe, where every title vies for supremacy on one front or another, Unity seems to lag in most departments except its open world.
In the spirit of soaking in this masterpiece of a world, I’ve crafted a gameplay that steps back from the typical large buildings I make videos in, and uses the streets of Paris as its playground. As always, it leans into the very essence of being an assassin. And while the beautiful custom outfit in this video, brought to life by KinimodXD and LordofThe9, might catch your eye, it's the soul of Paris and the essence of the true assassin that I hope truly shines through.
I also wanted to try out an unreleased version of the acu fixes mod as it really pushes what you can do with your Assassin. that Nametaken kindly provided. also, thanks to @Whitelight for the title idea. It's a quote from one of his videos :)
Assassin's Creed Unity is an action-adventure video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It was released in November 2014 for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One, and in December 2020 for Stadia.
