Sometimes you set off into the world with big goals in mind. And then sometimes you end up in the hospital.
I sustained an injury recently that had me admitted into the hospital for surgery here in Osaka, Japan. Now I'm a big fan of new cultural experiences, but this was a bit more than I was bargaining for.
Follow along as I go for surgery in Japan.
Who are we?
We are Slowsteading, a formerly homesteading family of four embarking on a journey to explore alternative ways of living. We are challenging conventions about what a family needs to thrive, exploring ideas of minimalism, slow living, and location independence. Have you ever been hospitalized abroad? What was that like?

Not hospitalized, but I went to numerous holistic doctors throughout Mexico, for a chronic illness and fertility. The level of care was higher than the US, with shorr wait times, a fraction of the cost (for example: $9usd for an ultrasound), and we never felt rushed out of an appointment. It's hard to explain, but I felt more "heard" by Mexican doctors, even despite the language barriers.

I was in the emergency room in Cuenca, Ecuador; wonderful experience (as hospital visits go). I couldn't have asked for better care. In addition, super reasonably priced.

Rest up, heal up, and take it easy! Pretty cool to see that Japan's healthcare system is still doing well. That's a long stay!

Thanks! It's strange, they ask you to come in a full day before the surgery. I guess so they can monitor you and fully cut you off food and drink. I enjoyed the quiet moments, but it seemed a bit excessive honestly. 😂

I moved from Georgia to Hawaii when I was 23yo. Never regretted it for one day & am 77yo now. Yes, had surgery at Queen’s Medical Ctr in Honolulu & all worked out well. Had many Japanese friends & I love their beautiful, structured lifestyle & culture.

I just found your channel. I am surprised you had to spend 4 days in hospital for surgery. Here in Canada almost every surgery is day surgery. I had a quadrant mastectomy for breast cancer in March and was sent home a couple hours later. My daughter broke her arm and had a plate and several screws added to correct 3 fractures and was sent home right away. It’s almost like drive through service here. That’s what “free” healthcare provides lol. Hope you are feeling better and getting back to normal activities.

Hello from the south. Speaking from below the free healthcare line. And the same was true. My mother had a full mastectomy plus astethic surgery to the other breast to match. 1 day procedure. One day procedure for as many things as we can. I am a nurse and part of this is that hospitals are yucky places. And many people actually get sick from other sick ppl in the hospital. We let to avoid that by getting them out quickly.

I was surprised too honestly, they even have you come in a full day before the surgery (to monitor you, I guess?). I'm Canadian as well so was surprised with how differently they handled it. Health care in Japan is mostly "free" for residents (publicly funded, but the individual still pays 30%), so not sure what drives the different approaches. In hindsight, the bit of quiet time wasn't so terrible while I got fed and taken care of. Kind of relaxing!

Were you said by your private insurer that cancer surgery was not covered by your plan? Did you set a GoFundMe to finance your surgery? Did you lose your job because your company/state has not sick leave (not to speak a paid one)? Did you go bankrupt because of the (insanely high) medical bills? Ever considered that the point of public healthcare is that when you get cancer your only worry has to be the disease, and not the costs? I hope you realize that many of your Southern neighbors dream with having what you complain about, and that you being sent home quickly means two things: you had no complications, and someone else could be immediately cared for.

Well, hospital food doesn't seem much better in Japan than in the US. I think lack of money prevents people from pursuing their dreams far more than fear does.

yeah, skating in my 30s is a different experience for sure and much more care needs to be taken cus im not falling and getting up 100x a day anymore lol

I do have travel insurance, but had to pay out of pocket up front and seek reimbursement 😅 Definitely a source of stress at times 🤷🏻‍♂️

Why did they have you in the hospital so long before your procedure?

It seems to be the standard procedure in Japan, based on my Japanese friends' experiences. I guess they can better limit your intake of food and drink prior to the surgery 🤷🏻‍♂ In any case, a whole day to read books and snooze without having to watch the kids was a bit of a luxury 😂😂

I’m new to ur channel, this 1st video I viewed 👍 You should consider putting ur trust in Jesus Christ. He is real - no one or nothing else is. Do you have a Bible? You should pick one up. There is only Almighty God of Heaven & Earth. He so loved the world He sent His Son Jesus Christ as the last and only sacrifice so those who believe and trust in Him & will have everlasting life w/God in Heaven. P.S. you need to take shower before operation because in few days you can't move your hands.. and its summer season.. i dont know if you know already or not that your money using in your operation can refund depend on your insurance in here in japan but ask the your local cityhall they explain it to you

Wow, four days in the hospital for elbow surgery. In the U.S., that'd be an outpatient procedure or a one night stay. Health "care" means exactly that in Japan.

Hygiene is very important. Often, people shower after coming from work, and they expect a shower before...private times.

Tea drinkers dont get coffee headaches on a fast. And im a christian so i fast at least once a year. Hope this all went well. Gotta say , in America when operations are a must , they have your back.
