In this video, I'm going to show you how to make water changes easy. Water changes are a necessary evil in fish keeping. Buckets are the worst, and full water change pumps/systems can get expensive. This $5 water change hack will change the way you do water changes! JJ Gills on Facebook:

If you get an adapter that fits on the hose itself and the clear vinyl tubing that attaches to a siphon you can complete that system and make it exactly like the python this way you can vacuum your gravel and everything if you have gravel and not sand
@daexotics339
@daexotics339 2 года назад
I like to run a long tube either outside or to a drain. I have so many pumps to spare that I just use that to pump the water out and when all the water I want to take out is out. I just simply put the pump from the tank to my water reserve bins that have Water ready to fill the tank back up. Been there with the buckets I think we all have but instead of moving buckets I now just move a pump and tubing.

Pro tip: Buy a small cheap powerhead (100-200gph) and attach it to the tank side of the hose for draining, it will speed things up considerably! Once you've removed enough water just unplug the power head and reverse the flow, don't even need to detatch it. I use this method with standard python and can do 50% water change on my 60 breeder in about 25 mins.

You have my loyalty. Had to find solutions quick with a hand/wrist injury and I really didn't want to dive on the whole kit, especially because I have to replace a utility sink just to use this method. Combining this idea with one from the Aquarium Co-op, a DIY "Python hook" that attaches to the other end of the hose, will likely be how I do things from now on. I'm glad you mention that people only need to initiate the siphon, many people just waste water and keep the faucet running. Cheers! Now, back to trying to pick a hose...lol. Keep wanting to go with a 3/4" 50' Flexzilla, but I know how hoses...typically fail. Lol

Im using buckets now, but have been looking around for something else. The one thing about the python system is that you ideally want one for each aquarium to avoid crosscontamination since the same hose is used both for syphoning and refilling. Or atleast keep using buckets for waterchanges in the quaranteentank to be sure.
@oliviervieira7174
@oliviervieira7174 2 года назад
You can simply run really hot water through the hose to your sink or shower after each uses. Unless there is something else to be worried about I am missing.
@Myndi78
@Myndi78 2 года назад
@@oliviervieira7174 I genuinly dont know if thats enough to kill all diseases, I would use hydrogen peroxide or vinegar on tools but thats not easy with a hose 😁. I just generally try to keep seperate tools for different aquariums (within reason). I would have no issue using the same hose to fill different tanks, its just that since you also syphon out using the same hose there is plenty of opportunity for stuff to be transfered over. I definitly wouldnt use it for quarantene tanks, or tanks with annoying algea etc!
@oliviervieira7174
@oliviervieira7174 2 года назад
@@Myndi78 I shouldn't have used the term simply! To my knowledge boiling water would be enough to kill all pathogens but I can't see anyone using boiling water every time. I bet the hottest water coming from your sink would be enough to kill all common aquarium pathogens, but of course it's only a bet. If you are serious about safe and using the hose, I would look into blocking one end and filling the hose with some solution and storing it as is for some time.
@Myndi78
@Myndi78 2 года назад
@@oliviervieira7174 I havent bought a python system yet, but I think I will soon! I only have 3 tanks running and two of them are below 30gallon so I might just use a python only for the big tank, since thats the one that breaks my back when its time for waterchange 😂
@oliviervieira7174
@oliviervieira7174 2 года назад
@@Myndi78 I can't imaging using buckets for anything but water top offs, I would've otherwise given up already! If you're interested in a DIY python aquarium coop has a video titled ''Make Water Changes EASY with THIS'' also depending on your setup and mostly your water source using plants like pothos suck up an enormous amount of nitrates, effectively getting rid of water changes. I try to make it so I only have to do water changes every couple months, using RO water, my own mineral mixes and plants.

naaaa... I tried this initially for just once or twice and found this very very very time consuming when you got 30 gallon tank. It will take longer than 40 minutes waiting on the trickling to empty your tank... Just get yourself a submersible pump; it doesn't have to be very expensive one. I bought one for less than 25 buck and it pumps about 180 gallon an hour. Connect the pump to the pipe and put it in the fish tank. It only takes 7 to 10 minutes to empty my tank and another 7 to 10 minutes to refill. Another thing too .... sometime it is not easy to get your siphon going.

The 1 Cup gets 7ml of Seachem Prime. (Standard W/C is 35 USG.) This is added immediately BEFORE I start the Refill. With the 1 quart I add Seachem Acid Buffer since my City Tap Water has high 7 to high 8 pH. I add 4 oz, at a time, of this Solution as the Tank fills. Works fine. I feel like most ppl have some kind of hose. I ended up spending about $10 the main piece and adapters. But if you got a good deal on the whole thing, I'm happy for you 👍🏾

Why are you adding water to that tank with a garden hose that's first mistake second mistake the ammonia chemicals that are in the regular tap water should not be going into that tank filter out those chemicals do not use a garden hose you are to use a drinking hose only

How is the garden house a mistake? Every good fish owner puts declorinator in their tap water.

@@tonybeop I think he’s saying it needs to be conditioned before it goes in the tank. I know it Florida it does. But it’s probably ok to condition it as it fills. But then again I’m not a pro.

Do you need a garden hose or can you use the typical tubing that comes with aquarium water siphoning kits?

To use the siphon tubing, you'd have to have a hose adapter which is another couple bucks
