Yes, we also have more camels and wild horses than any other country, but... hooves (so not native). Actually, camels don't, technically, have hooves. We also have more foxes and cane toads than any other country, but they aren't native either. They're all just good examples of why it's a bad idea to introduce species here!

During the one of the major bushfires, I was studying in Germany and during the break one of the teachers came up to me and was like "Is you're family alright?" and my response was a nonchalant "Yeah", "I saw the news, they said an area the size of Belgium was on fire". I actually laughed, "Yes, but only about 100 people live in that spot". It was luckily one of the few bushfires with little property damage and with everyone safe. A lot of people judge the size of Australia by looking at a Mercator projection map, which makes it look far smaller relative to its true size
@r.fairlie7186
@r.fairlie7186 5 месяцев назад
By coincidence, I was living in Belgium in the 1970s and some co-workers said that they’d heard that Australia was experiencing some bushfires in the eastern states. I could tell that they had no idea of the extent of the area on fire. I told them to look at a map of Europe and imagine a series of big fires stretching all the way from Sweden to Spain. Only then did they realise that it was a massive event.

If I remember the news report of beach closure right, then it was a good idea, despite it being the height of summer. After over a half a metre of rainfall in 24 hours, the sea was dangerous with surf & fecal matter, logs & trees floating and possible sea snakes headed to shore for calmer water, made for a great time not to go swimming.

I'm Aussie and I hate wearing anything on my feet when walking on sand. Ute is pronounced Yoote - short for utility vehicle - invented in Australia for farmers and now used by tradies and and anyone else who finds them useful. Some buy them just because they're cool.

@@dianacourt377 They say it that way ("oot") like other words they use, like mute and boot. It's because we Aussies usually like to chop words in half and end it with -ie or -y 😀that it seems normal to us. "Yoot" is just a chopped down version of pronouncing "utility", but that is an Australian "dialect" if you like, not something commonly used in the US or other countries. Also the round 50c coin is valuable due to there being more than 50c of silver in it when it was minted, they are worth about $10 these days.

Ute as in utility, pronounced " yoot". The round 50cent coin is original issue after we changed to decimal currency. It was later change to hexagonal shape. Queen Elizabeth was probably about 30-35 years of age when coin was minted. So about 60 years before she passed. It is now a collectors item.

The 1966 50c piece was only issued that year, and had a silver content of 75% if I recall correctly. 1966 was the first year of decimal currency in Australia, after the old Pounds, Shillings and Pence. The original 50c piece is quite rare, and sell for about $10 Australian today. In subsequent years, all 50c coins have had 12 sides, and are cupro-nickel (75%/25%).

Due to heavy rain causing major flooding, rivers have carried lots of wood, branches, logs and other debris into the ocean. This makescswimming in surf highly dangerous, as waves can hit swimmers with floating solid items causing injury or even deaths. That even ignores potential contamination by farm/animal wastes or even sewage swept into floods, causing potential health hazards. For safety, beaches are closed till natural clearing takes place.

Hi Ryan, That round 50c piece was the original 50 brought out in '66 when we went to Dollars. It was discontinued and replaced with the 12 sided 50c because it contained 56c worth of silver and people were melting them down. We do not have a Quarter, just 2$, 1$, 50, 20, 10 and 5 cent coins . The 2 and 1 dollar coins were brought out to replace paper notes as the life of a 1$ paper note was 2 weeks, the life span of a coin is up to 30yrs. 1 and 2 cent coins were dropped as they were not worth the metal in them. Some of us would be interested in any info u have on US coinage.

It’s the ‘Best Before’ dates they are trying to have removed, because a lot of people get them confused with the ‘Use By’ dates… as evidenced by your comment. They are two very different things. ‘Best Before’ means the product is still safe to eat, but may not be at the peak of its original texture or flavour. ‘Use By’ is for things like meat or dairy for which there is a very definite expiry date and to consume them after that date can be dangerous to your health.

The Queen was born in 1926 and crowned in 1952. The engraving for her portrait on our coins would have been created when she was crowned. The same portrait was used for all currency manufactured during her reign. On the 14th February, 1966 we changed to decimal currency. Despite the sized difference between the fifty cent round coin and the twenty cent coin some errors were made so the shape was changed. That also made the withdrawal of the round fifty cent coin easier. They were withdrawn because the silver content made the coin more expensive than its face value. Debris pronounced debree is the junk floating in the water. Most of our coastal cities and towns were built at the mouth of a river so after flooding all sorts of stuff ends up in the ocean. Anything from dead animals to trees. The term debris covers the lot. In Australia we write and speak English English not the murdered version you people use in the US.

The American coin is 4th row from the left, third coin down. Also, The size of a large pizza in Australia depends on the pizza chain. For example, Domino's Pizza sizes in Australia range from 25 cm (10 inch) (8 slices) for a large pizza to 32 cm (12.5 inch) (8 slices) for an extra large pizza1. Australia's Pizza House's large pizzas are 12 inch in diameter and can feed up to 2 adults, or 4 small children2. A large pizza is typically between 16 and 18 inches in diameter.

Quicksale is the supermarket's way to get rid of stock that's going off in a day or two to minimise losses. Multiple quicksale stickers are there because each day they'll mark it down more until it goes past the use by date and they're not allowed to sell it anymore. Or sometimes excess stock from holiday periods will go on quicksale if they just want it gone to make room for more regular stock.

Supermarkets look for things nearing "use by"/"best before" and mark them down to sell them quicker. Generally they have 3 markdowns, and if you're lucky enough for the stock to be there at the 3rd markdown it will be 70-95% off (not sure exact numbers, but a lot). In some parts of the country (or some parts of every capital city) everyone goes away for Christmas and New Year - so if you stay home and your supermarket hasn't planned for it you can get some really good deals (some years we get *really* cheap seafood on the afternoon of Christmas Eve (this year we got whole sides of salmon at about $12 a kilo).....problem is you can't rely on it, because some years the supermarkets have less and simply run out......

1966 is the year our currency went decimal, it's also the only year our 50c coins were circular, they became dodecagonal after that. It is actually worth more than 50c because the 1966 coin (as well as being rare) has a higher silver content than the value of the coin should contain. If melted down, it'd be worth maybe 56c. To a collector though, because of the rarity, it'd be worth more.

The circular 50 cent coins were first introduced in 1966 when Australia went decimal, and they were made from 80 per cent pure silver and 20 per cent copper and were stopped 2 years later because the metals used became more expensive by weight than the coin value. They are worth up to $15 now, and the shape was changed in 1968 to a dodecagonal (12-sided) coin.

Those tomatoes that weren't the weight as stated on the label can work the other way. I was in my local Coles and picked up a tray of fillets for Chicken Burgers. As I usually do, I looked for a tray that had a longer Use By date and I found one. It was a fair bit heavier than the first one I picked up so I weighed them. Both trays were selling for the same price and said 400g on the label. One was 420g, the other was 650g. Guess which one I bought, for the exact same price? I do that all the time now and in these days of supermarket rip-offs I'm even more pleased with myself. Spread the word people! 😃

"Ute" is short for "utility" and should be pronounced correspondingly. An Australian ute used to be the same as an American "utility coupe", but in the last thirty years or so the sense of the term has expanded to include pickup trucks. There is an article about them in wikipedia called "Ute (vehicle)". I think that US manufacturers stopped building utility coupe in about 1980 because they were treated as cars for the purpose of gas mileage and emission standards, whereas pickups are treated as trucks (and therefore not included in the fleet averages).
