Great video as always! I really like the illustrated covers but I agree with the other commenter that they do vibe very chick-lit so it's a bit hard to know what to make of them.

Yeah they're very hard to decode, but I think these days they're now intended to convey sexy romcom. At least that's the trend I see emerging.

My main problem with illustrated covers is that I don't know how to read them. To me they look like (UK-style) chick lit, so I tend to assume no/closed door sex, but I just don't know. Are they always light and fun or can they be dark and angsty? What are the clues? I need help!

No idea lol. The ones I have read lately have all been sexy, but not particularly angsty. That said, angst is in the eye of the beholder, I think. My bar is pretty high. Like, I'd label Molly O'Keefe high angst, but Ruby Lang not. And Laura Vivanco found Ruby's fairly high angst. So I'm apparently a terrible judge of what's angsty or not. So...I think illustrated covers are still evolving? Wish I could be more help!

@@elisabethlane6718 That's my main objection to them - they don't do the basic work I need a cover to do, which is give me a clue whether this is a book that I want to read (or a book I want to read NOW).
