TBH, this is the only West Side Story 2021 scene I got scared of and I think it's slightly disturbing. I mean, look at their expressions and acting and everything! Graziella and Anita would be awesome BFFs if it wasn't for the rivalry.
The crew and casts especially Ariana DeBose deserves to win any awards. Something's Coming and it's Ariana DeBose Oscar's.
edit (11-13-22):
Oh well, not just an Oscar for this film. Also received BAFTAs, Critic's Choice, SAG Awards, and Golden Globes ✨

The scene is pure terror in both versions. Obviously anyone can assaulted but I think as a woman watching you truly feel empathy and fear for Anita’s situation: she’s outnumbered within a group of angry men. That’s what is truly chilling.

Interesting thing to note here that Graziella is wearing Riffs shirt in this scene, so in a way she’s functioning as a stand in for Riff, when the boys throw her out it’s symbolic that they are throwing Riff and his memory out in the cold. Riff might have been a lot of things but he wasn’t a rapist and I don’t believe for one second he would have condoned what the Jets attempted to do here, he would have been disgusted.
@ValpCreates
@ValpCreates 29 дней назад
Correct, because when they are throwing his memory out, it’s like they think they can do whatever they want with no consequences without him, because they know he would be against this, and they don’t want him to be against them, including in this case. They probably would’ve also thrown him out had he still been alive so they can continue with no consequences with him around. They were very wrong. And racist =/= r*pist, so you can hate someone, but you can still respect them enough to not wish that upon them. This is an example of “I wouldn’t wish that upon my worst enemy”, including for Graziella.

This scene illustrates just how important Riff was as this was something he never would have permitted. One of the only changes I didn't like about the 2021 version was how much they marginalized and cut Ice's character. He was given a lot more to do, including his own song, in the original, and I also have always gotten the sense that that version of Ice wouldn't have let this happen either. But in the '60s version he went out to try to find Chino before Anita arrives at Doc's, so he wasn't there for it. In this version, he's there and he's just another piece of shit. I guess I get why they would cut down on his character overall though if it meant more time for the main characters.

I like that they changed it so that the girls tried to help her too, and not in a half-hearted way either. Literally grabbed her hand and tried to pull her away, until they were thrown out the door, and even then they were banging on the windows, yelling at them not to hurt her. They might have been on opposing sides of the battle, but in that moment, they didn't see Sharks and Jets. Only a fellow woman in need of rescuing from attempted rape. It really makes the scene better in my eyes, and I also liked how this Anita got to fight back a bit and have some agency, while the movie still made it clear that she was a victim.
@superjackster0165
@superjackster0165 5 месяцев назад
I get what they were going for with this change. But my issue is how adding the girls in this scene really destroys it's purpose for it happening. In the original film, the Jets had no control or witnesses to stop them. Riff (their leader) was dead, Ice (their new leader) had gone out to find Chino, and their girlfriends weren't there to calm them down. This allowed the Jets to attack Anita and attempt to rape her since there was nobody there to stop them or witness it. Remember that they only stopped because Doc walked into the shop just a split-second before they were about to rape her. Having the girls be in this scene in this version really undermines that tension because I'm having hard time believing that the Jets would willingly commit sexual assault on someone when there's 2 witnesses outside who could've easily reported them to the cops
@imthebossmermaid3648

@@superjackster0165 I see where you're coming from, but I disagree. I think it shows the opposite of how a lot of racist white women act. Despite the fact that they didn't like Puerto-Ricans and their gangs were rivals, at the end of the day they were still both women, and both face similar issues. It showed female solidarity in spite of their opposing sides. I think they could have had a change of heart if the movie called/allowed for it.
@surette2012
@surette2012 3 месяца назад
@@superjackster0165I actually agree with this. It kind of cuts the tension having the guys have a lucid moment to throw their girlfriends out. And…it’s a bit bizarre for them to do that right in front of them? Sa is so disgusting and shameful. Those who commit such acts are cowards and are emboldened by the idea they could get away with it. Obviously they were riled up, because it was already crazy enough for them to do that in the store, but now I have to suspend my disbelief even more with a group of crying girls banging on the window. If they can sense the girls are mortified and fighting them to stop this, why would they think there would be any solidarity and protection for them after the assault? Those girls will be reporting you in a heartbeat.

I see alot of comments about the girls being bfs if it wasnt rivalry. I dont think that's true, because gratziella felt the same way about the sharks that the jets did of her own accord. You do not have to be friends with or even like someone, to try and protect them. It's about humanity. Like the expression, "I wouldnt wish that on my worst enemy" exists for a reason. Some people have enough common ground to know what lines not to cross. The gangs hate eachother and openly assault one another, but their personal code keeps them from involving the police because they wouldnt wish prison on one another when they can "handle" it themselves. I doubt believe the women would have been friends, but they have enough respect for themselves and eachother to know there are lines you dont cross, and points in time when it is necessary to stand up. They make no attempt to comfort her after the fact and anita's makes no thanks about their effort. It was a horrible thing about to happen and it was their place to try and stop it like it would be anyones

This was the one scene that always bothered me in both versions of the film. It just seemed so out of character for the Jets to do something like this. Sure, it was made clear that they were delinquents and huge trouble makers. But there was zero indication that they were willing to rape someone
@Serenity113
@Serenity113 5 месяцев назад
Rape isn't about sex. It's mostly about power and control. Riff was killed, and the Jets were feeling angry and had no control without their leader. They suddenly see the girlfriend of the guy who killed their leader walk into "their turf" and are not thinking. Only feeling. These are kids with no way on how to deal with their emotions. Riff was the one who called the shots, who rein them in. Now without him, they are filled with rage, they are racists, and they want revenge in any way. From what I can remember, Valentina ran that shop and allowed anyone in. She trusted Tony and I believe possibly she trusted them too. She knew that they were troublemakers, but she never believed they would do anything horrible like that.

@@Serenity113 And I’m so glad they let Rita as Valentina give that speech about just what kind of monsters they have let themselves become after this. I never liked how Doc always just let what they did slide in the 1961 film as I’ve always felt he should have given them a piece of his mind…I mean they just sexually assaulted a woman in his shop! And when you listen to Rita talk about how hard this scene was for her to do in the 1961 film, it sorta makes it more poignant that this time she got to be the one to ‘save’ another Anita and speak her piece to the Jets, it’s like it’s come full circle in a poetic way.

I disagree - both sides have had horrible losses, and Anita was trying to help Tony because of her love for Maria. Even Riff's girlfriend can see that above all, through the racism and disagreements, it is never okay to assault someone. To rape is worse than any sort of physical violence, and the Jets seem to think that without Riff they can do whatever they want, even ignoring someone who is friends with them in order to assault a girl who wants to help. The Jets are entirely in the wrong, their morals are completely fucked up in this scene.

Right to be upset and grieve doesn't translate to right to assault someone else in any shape or form. I'd be sympathetic if they gave Anita the cold shoulder or even angrily told her to go away or something - that's what I'd do if the partner of someone who killed a family member/close friend approached me. Heck I wouldn't even blame them if they refused to give Tony the message from her. Rape however is wrong no matter what context and the guys crossed into psycho territory by doing that.... (FYI I've had family members pass away in situations where certain other people were partly responsible - no way would I ever go attack those people....)

@@ilariaatzei IDK the scene was weird to me. Gratziella (period) was weird to me. All except for her initial scene where she walked past the Jet and the leer at her before Riff calls their attention back. The Jet girls being there just pulled focus away from Anita and what was happening in the store. Most everyone (in the comments ever) is focused on Gratzielle. it rings very White Savoir TM. I really didn’t like how, in this version, they had the jets girls try to help Anita and stop the Jets from hurting her. What made the scene of Anita getting assaulted so disturbing in the original film was how there was nobody there to stop the jets or control them, since Riff was dead and Ice had gone out to go find Chino, as well as the fact that Anita was all alone with nobody there to protect her until Doc showed up just seconds before they were about to start raping her. Having the jets girls trying to help Anita in this version completely lowered the stakes and made this scene increasingly toned down then how it was in the original film
@idaf3028
@idaf3028 Год назад
Actually that's what made this scene good. It showed women empowerment and women supporting each other in time of need. Sure Graziella had something in for Anita because of her race and background but when it comes to things like SA she overlooks that and it's not about that anymore.

@Amy Thomasson I disagree, if anything Graziella’s attempts to help Anita reinforces the entire theme of West Side Story about how senseless rivalry and needless hatred is unimportant when another woman or human being is experiencing a horrific situation that transcends any racial, ethnic or cultural differences. The emotional impact of the scene is magnified by Graziella’s recognition of this and attempts to intervene and is not merely a take on “girl power”. Anita’s reaction to the situation leading her to state that Maria is dead is still valid, but Graziella’s actions add interesting nuance to this scene and central WSS themes
@XxBlueEyedxX
@XxBlueEyedxX Год назад
I don't think so. Seeing the Jet girls screaming and trying to help her showed how bad the situation really was. I agree that the focus in this version is different from the original but it doesn't ton it down.

@superjackster0165 Год назад
@@XxBlueEyedxX I completely understand where you’re coming from. But having the girls try to help Anita completely undermines and misses the point of the ending of the film. The whole conflict of West Side Story is how every guy and girl members of the Sharks and the Jets all hate each other and constantly attack each other. The ending of the story is very powerful when Maria finally snaps and calls them out on what terrible people they are and how their actions led to 3 people getting killed. That’s when the guys and girls finally decide to put their differences aside.
