ℹ️ About the Episode:
When it comes to planning a big trip, it's only natural to have all the details mapped out. For the first week of our big Italian "Empty Nesting" trip, we had each night planned months in advance. After all, we're noobs when it comes to travel abroad! So when our bed & breakfast canceled the pre-paid reservation we'd made in January the night before... we couldn't believe it.
As disappointed as we were, we knew Europe would be no different than any of our RV trips in the States. We knew in our gut that what we'd come up with instead would be equal to or better than our original plans-and we were right! This abrupt change of plans gave us the confidence to wing it. Not having expectations can often lead to being pleasantly surprised at the smallest outcomes rather than saying, “Hmm… I thought it would be more/less ________ ” (fill in the blank). We found a charming town we’d heard of while planning but had decided to skip. As it turned out, Alberobello, Italy, is exactly what we needed: a charming small town that wasn’t crawling with tourists, plus good food and a laid-back local vibe. We extended our stay to three nights and used our time to adjust to the time zone and enjoy each other’s company in this quiet town. Assisi, Italy, was also on our list of places to visit, but we would have only visited for a day trip. Now that we weren't locked into our original plans, we could spend the night. Experiencing the town after all the tourists left was much like Mackinac Island-quiet and peaceful. We were also able to make dinner reservations at Le Terrazze di Properzio-a beautiful restaurant overlooking the town-and enjoy a magnificent sunset.

I understand that it must take a lot of work to make just one episode per week, but I could watch a 30-minute episode of you guys every day and still perhaps want more. If I come across anyone who believes that life is inherently negative and dull, I would always direct them to your channel as evidence that life can be amazing!

When we were in Rome our room was unique they use hand towels for wash cloths. The doors in our room were about 12 feet tall. And we had to hand in our room cards when we went out, and the lights wouldn't work unless you had your room inserted in a slot

This honestly may be the best travel video I have seen in years. You are traveling the way I love, with just enough resources to make it fun and enjoyable, but deeply embedded in the life of the area. The little places, the fun surprises, the hilarious moments ("You mean I have to back up this street?"). Thank you for making such awesome content.

I was hoping the video was about driving the Amalfi Coast. Having done it myself I was wondering how Americans would manage the traffic, narrow roads and hairpin bends. Thankfully, they had the good sense to drive a small car, which made it that bit easier.

I lived in northern Italy (Vicenza) for three years in the mid 1970's. My husband was in the military. Before we had our baby we bought a Moto Guzzi (touring bike) and traveled on it to Rome, Pisa, Livorno. My husband has since passed, our beautiful daughter is now a mother of teens and I now find myself alone. Thank you for taking me back to my young adulthood, a lifetime ago. Somehow my tears are bringing me happiness. Thank you so much...

We just returned from Alaska! You were our inspiration! We had some minor "dips" but loved the trip! We left Spokane WA on June 1 and returned to the lower 48 on September 9th. On our trip we referred to your videos at each stop! We went on the Talon Air and LuLuBelle tours! We also went on the canoe trip to Valdez Glacier and so much more! Our plan after full-time travel in our Airstream (we have been on the road for 3 years) was Europe...stay for 6 months to a year....Now we will have your videos of Italy to take with us! Trish you are the most joyful person...it is so refreshing! Bravo to KYD...

Spent many years in a reserve unit based in Sicily. The only issue I had driving was the gas pumps. Fortunately, they always had attendants, or I would have filled my car with diesel more than once. Driving in the countryside is an experience when you are suddenly surrounded by sheep that come out of nowhere to cross the street, The architecture is amazing. You drive along the base of a cliff, and somehow someone built a town into the cliff. No wasted space at all.

We had similar driving experiences. Using a gps turned onto a road with high walls on each side. Slowly they became closer over the miles until we were driving at 1mph with the mirrors folded in to keep from hitting the walls. I was never so happy in my driving years to finally come upon a main road.

This brought back the whole ambiance of my trip to Tuscany when I stayed in a 500 yr old monastery for 15 EU a nite! My door had a fresco over it….I would have suggested you see the Cinque Terre - maybe would have been similar to Amalfi coast I think, but when you decided on Puglia I’ve always wanted to see those little stone huts and your room was very cool. I rented a Smart Car that had ads all over it, so I stuck out like a tourist, but the driving on narrow roads was easier because of it! Chao!

Going with a spontaneous Plan B is one of my favourite life lessons, in travel and in life! My parents booked nothing ahead on road trips with my brother & I in the 80s, and to some extent they’ve lived their lives that way. A life like that doesn’t tie everything down neatly, but when we’re not tied down we’re free to discover amazing things. And the only way to truly know that is by going with a spontaneous Plan B! Also thanks so much for the tip about driving being easier with smartphones/voice navigation. You made it look better than I imagined. 🇨🇦

The end was the best part of this video. People who have been married a while know their partner. Last month as my wife and mother-in-law were pulling back into our campsite, I got up from my chair to guide my wife so she didn't hit the hitch. I just nodded my head when she needed to stop and my MIL got a kick out of how with such little input, my wife knew what I meant. She was expecting hand signals and talking. For the rest of the day, we would just nod at eachother randomly and do something for the other just to mess with her😂

Just got back from Italy, rented a stick shift to drive from Rome to Montepulciano and then to Florence, was incredibly intense due to all the mountains and what not. Then rented a second car in Florence to drive to Chianti region, it was automatic and it made driving in Italy a breeze. Oh failed to mention that I didn’t take toll roads on the first car trip so it took me through some interesting places. I would recommend getting an automatic car if possible unless you have been driving stick in that kind of terrain for years.

I drove in Italy back in 2014, before Google Maps, for a 2 week vacation. I just had the old fashion paper road maps & a good navigator. I found parking in the larger cities more difficult to find or cost a fortune. I also drove in Ireland for a month and put 3,000 miles on the rental car…now that was interesting! When I got home, I found myself driving on the left side of the road a couple of times…
