I met a gentleman called Oliver at the Kenyan side of the border, he's a port health officer. Oliver complimented my bike and inquired about my tour. I saw this surprising emotion on his face when I explained how I started the trip from Kigali, Rwanda. Apparently, he owns a bike and has done a few long trips, "I wish I could take a leave from work and ride with you to Nairobi tomorrow, I love this kind of adventure", he said. He offered to escort me to my hotel which is 24km from the border, I asked about his job and he said his shift was over and he was about to go home. We started riding but it was getting dark and dangerous to be on the highway as none of us had rear lights. I told him that I will cancel the booking I made early and look for a nearby hotel to spend the night and continue to Nairobi tomorrow. He gave me a convincing smile and said I shouldn't bother and offered his home. "What I generous offer! Is this how you people are in Kenya"? I inquired. He smiled again.
Oliver always wears a big smile, he is simply a happy soul. We made a detour to his house and there I met his young beautiful family. His wife Celestine and Taji his 20-month-old baby were more than happy to receive me. They made me dinner and I had the first taste of githeri, a traditional Kenya meal, prepared with beans maize, peas and served with avocado.
