Located in the south east of Turkey, Şanlıurfa or as the locals call it Urfa is known as the city of the prophets. We spend explore the city with its mix of Turkish, Kurdish, and Arab residents.
Urfa is the city of prophets and perhaps the most interesting and historic city in Turkey’s southeastern region, It’s certain that Urfa dates back at least 3500 years.
I went to the old city, then Balıklıgöl (Sacred Fish Ponds), Hazreti Ibrahim Halilullah, the cave where the Prophet Abraham is said to be born, the Kazzaz Bazaar where you can see many traditional craftsmanship; Göbeklitepe (World's Earliest Temple, 11,000 years old), and finally up to the Urfa castle!
Şanlıurfa, city, southeastern Turkey. It lies in a fertile plain and is ringed by limestone hills on three sides.
The city, of great age, controls a strategic pass to the south through which runs a road used since antiquity to travel between Anatolia and northern Mesopotamia. The modern name derives from the early Aramaic name Urhai, which was changed to Edessa when the town was refounded as a military settlement in the 3rd century BCE. Freeing itself from imposed Hellenism, Edessa, as capital of the principality of Osroëne, was a major center of Syrian culture; it figured prominently in the conflicts between Parthia and Rome.
