I tried doing that this week after a long time and it worked! I often think like, if there is nothing obviously interesting, it's probably nothing there, maybe take a snapshot and move on. But the more "active" time you spend there with more trial and errors, more likely you'll end up with great shot :) although it still doesn't work every time 😅

This exercise is part of why I take the same route about 90% of the time I go out, why I'm glad I live in a city, and I'm glad some vintage lenses are so inexpensive. Plenty of small things around a city to get multiple angles of, taking the same route gives more chances to notice something new on it, and with the right lenses, even the big things or your usual things can be made to look different. I have 35mm for general purpose, a Samyang 18-28 f/4-4.5 for super wides (it's useless past 24mm except for lomography), and a Nikon 80-200 for telephoto shots out past 85mm. And those last two lenses cost me a total $122 combined. Good options for cheap makes this so much easier to get into (especially if you can't "zoom with your feet"), and using something older than you to do it adds a bit of fun.

TLDR: take more pics of stuff to increase chances of having better pics of stuff :). Or to phrase it more process like : Creativity often means avoiding the trap of investing too much in one idea and moving on. Force variation on a theme and you might surprise yourself with what comes out of it. Also a reason I avoid using a tripod (unless last resort, Astro work etc) is the tripod setup and tear down forces me into a mindset of investing too much in one idea.
@AdamFox999

Hi James, I have noticed that you often take photos at arms length. Is this just for the video or do you usually do this? I was told that you should hold the camera close to your body for stability. What is your take on this?
@TheFuzzyskwerl

Please do a video on using only telephoto lenses for landscape photography. (If you’ve not already done one). I'm curious about the rules there in terms of all the fields you shoot in. They look like private propriety, but apparently you can walk around without issue. What are the laws/rules? Here in Portugal I would only be able to walk around if they weren't fenced/walled, and even then if they're private, one has to be careful. Thanks. And as always great video, you make photography seem much more simple and personal, while other photography youtubers just seem to make it fancy, but more complicated. ps: Still hope you can make a video editing photos on Pixelmator Photo for iPad, and Affinity Photo for PC/Mac and iPad. pps: Do you recommend any second hand photography gear/shop? I always tend to be on the fence about getting second hand gear, but when the budget is low, one has to look at all the options.

(Glad I grabbed the G7x on the way out) The killer shot turned out to be one that I had expected to be way too backlit. Can never tell for sure which are the keepers until I see them on something bigger than 3" (excuse me... 7.5cm). I appreciate that you often show us your junk shots as examples.
