LaMelo plays for the Charlotte Hornets, LiAngelo plays for the Greensboro Swarm (the Hornets developmental league team), and Lonzo plays for the Chicago Bulls! Private schools in the high school sports leagues often recruit the best players in their area. Where I live our public school sucked but we had two future nba players that lived in the town but they would go to a private school for basketball. Then to iu and now one of them is still in the league the other one was out in like 4-5 years

The funny thing is I used to be really close to all of them especially Gelo. Rn Lonzo and I are the closest because my cousin is Lonzo's best friend and manager and even played at Chino Hills with them. His name is John Edgar Jr if you want proof. They used to play in tournaments at my school and I would line up at the tunnel and do a handshake with each of them. Fun fact Onyeka Onkongwu who plays for the Hawks was on this team. Also, Lonzo and I have the same bday and the summer before that season Onyeka's brother Nnamdi died in from injuries from a skateboarding accident.

The biggest difference between public and private schools besides money is recruiting. If I live in my town, I can't go two towns over and play for that public school, where as I can go two towns over and play for that private school. I mean public schools definitely still recruit wink wink but they can't recruit like private schools. The very top private schools have room and board like a college would and will recruit from all over the country. I live in NJ and know multiple people who went down to Florida to play high school baseball.

High school sports is definitely weird that way. You're spot on that teams can go from amazing, league champs to crap from one year to the next. Everyone who follows their local high school teams always looks at "returning seniors" to see what's up. A big difference between the private/public schools though is that if the parents have a ton of money and the kid has real talent, like pro-level potential, the parents can send their kid to whatever school they want because they have the money. Once a school is known for a sport, they tend to keep being known for that sport because parents send their talented kid there because the school is known for it, hence the school keeps being known for it. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy type of cycle. Some parents even move to accommodate this. Most public school kids are only at that school because the family happen to live in that particular area and the parents are in no position to move house just for their kid's sports.

I’m sure someone mentioned this already but in the US there are private schools that recruit from literally around the globe and will move a player out and provide housing and food, etc, to have top ranked players on their squad whereas public schools are primarily just the kids that live within the zoning area for said school competing for spots on the team.
@darnell-mooney

LaMelo grew to be 6'8 by the way. so he went from 5'8 in that video to 6'8 in about 4 years. he's one of the best young players in the NBA right now. also, in terms of public vs private, for basketball it's not even close. private schools have all of the advantage, and if you look at the list of "top" HS basketball teams, all of the top programs are usually dedicated basketball schools that go out and recruit the best players from all over the country. generally if you're considered a top basketball recruit, you don't play at a public school. you get recruited and go to a private school.

The difference between private schools and public regarding sports is this: private schools act just like colleges in that they recruit the best talent and offer them free tuition to play the sport or sports they were recruited for(it’s usually football and basketball.) public schools just get the players that live in the zone for their specific school. So the fact that a public school had this much talent, ability, and worked so well together, especially with only one senior and two freshman starting, is not only remarkable….it’s likely possible to never happen again.

The biggest reason private schools are typically better than public schools is because anyone can decide to attend a private school (if you can afford it) whereas public schools are supposed to be anyway, only made up of kids from specific areas. You aren't allowed to decide what public school your kids go to beyond where you decide to live (or who you want to send your kid to live with). So it's a lot easier to get some kids to come play for the powerhouse private school, even if it means "helping" the parents pay for it than being lucky enough to have multiple elite talents in just one school district (or loopholing around that with address changes/moving etc.)

Private schools here usually have more money to pay for better coaches and facilities. The big thing though is they're usually seen as a better option for education but because you have to pay for them most people can't afford it and that gives them the luxury of being able to offer scholarships and recruit for high school sports.

I went to a small public high school and by small I mean my class was about 30 people. I still live in the same county. Despite how small our school is you can always catch football, basketball and volleyball games on the radio and the bleachers are always packed, even for away games that involve traveling hundreds of miles. Our only real blacksheep is baseball which is kind of sad because we've always had a decent baseball team. We've also produced several state champion wrestlers. It's always interesting to hear that other countries don't really care about their local sports beyond the professional level.

I'm from the UK, and in the UK, no one cares about school sports or what we call Sunday league. It's usually a few parents watching on the side, or sometimes if there was a game on after school some people who had detention might stay and watch. And that's it. In Sunday league might get a few friends or siblings of the players or people walking the dogs in the park to stay and watch but again that's it really. Not like in USA where everyone comes out to watch. In my case i played Rugby Sunday league and there was no way my mother or father were going to get up early on a Sunday to watch lol. No chance.

Private schools tend to get all of the best athletes in the country regardless of the sport because yes they tend to have better facilities especially when kids come from rough areas/towns where the schools r poorly funded but also because they go up against higher levels of competition playing other private schools therefor the kids r more likely to get noticed by college scouts… Unlike public schools where the talent pool is limited to just the kids that live in that town, private schools can have kids attend who may even live an hour away from that school and sometimes families move closer just for their kid to attend a certain private school …. A lot of times private schools give kids some sort of “scholarship” to cover their fees to attend the school as well if the students cannot afford it

The comment at the end about controversy.....the eldest went to UCLA after high school. But before the season really started, UCLA (and I think another school) went to CHINA to play in a tournament. But before the first game 3 or 4 UCLA players were arrested for shoplifting IN CHINA! And of course one of the kids was BALL. When they got back home he was suspended and his father didn't like that and pulled him out of school....I think he played in Greece or Italy until he was ready for the NBA. Public vs Private High School. Recruiting is the key But really it goes to the Public Scho requirement that students are required to attend school in their "district". Now some can request attending school elsewhere but most school districts have a limit of how many students can transfer out. But the Private schools (primarily Catholic schools) are not bound by geography and have a rich history of alumni support of athletics and academia.
@barnabydodd8956

Private schools can get students from anywhere. There are no rules. So some of these private schools are basketball factories that attract some of the best players in the state or country. Mater Dei is one of those schools. Schools like IMG Academy attract star high school players to play for them. But a public school is different. Public schools only get students from their small jurisdiction. If you live a few miles from a particular public high school, you're assigned that public high school and can't go to any other public high school. So for a public high school to beat one of these basketball factory private high schools is like your local neighborhood team beating a national all-star team. And they didn't just do it once. They beat the crap out of all of these private high schools.

typically a public school has a mandatory region it draws students from. Thus the team is entirely dependent on who grows up in that neighborhood. These private schools have tuitions and they can get any kid that can pay from anywhere within driving distance. And in LA there are 15 million people to draw from. So the private schools often get the best players and give them some free tuition and end up with really stacked teams of great young players. Most of the teams on that list at 8:03 are private. All the "Academeis" , "Christians"; "Bishop Montgomery" & "De La Salle" are both private christian high schools. Thus, public schools often are not well funded. And definitely not in poorer neighborhoods. Not that Chino Hills or public school Redondo Union are poor. Both are affluent. Median income over $100k. In many sports parents of top players will move their whole family to have a kid play at a top school with a big time coach. There aren't academies like in football. Our high schools and colleges are our academies and they feed our pro sports, NBA, NFL, MLB. I actually live blocks from Redondo Union (public school). 8:03 Bishop Montgomery is 5 minutes down the street. And coincidentally i went to high school in Northern Cali and De La Salle was a rival school. I Didn't play hoop though, just American football, track, baseball, and later football at a different school. And you are spot on about it being easy to play. in the USA, every high school, middle school, elementary school, ever church, synagogue, and park there is a free basketball hoop and often more than one full court. You can play at least 1 vs 1 with just two people. It only requires a ball. And it's very popular. Football should be like that but in America, often where there are fields they are often locks so you can't use them. The goals have no nets and are locked (which honestly I think is part of why America hasn't produced a top striker; we don't grow up shooting much unless you go out of your way to find a field with nets and goals available). The best leagues are private and you pay to get in. With basketball you can play at a free public high school like this Chino Hills. But basketball is a pretty popular and approachable game. Helps to be 6' 7" though.

The reason the private schools are usually a lot better than the public schools it's because the private schools offer the really good players out of the public school scholarships and go to their schools for free that way they get a good education and they can get players from all over the country public schools have to get players just within their school districts so the fact that this public school was that good all five of those players were the same school district granted 3 of them were brothers so that makes it a little easier

The significance of the "public school" distinction in this case is that there are private schools that specialize in preparing outstanding athlete high school students to qualify for college admittance academically. A form of "college prep" school for athletes. Therefore, these schools wind up with sports teams, in this case basketball, that are entirely made up of players with next level athletic talent. A public school, theoretically, just draws its athletes from the surrounding school district.

Public Schools in America can be horrible compared to private schools. Private schools can hire college and even professional coaches and coaching teams but public schools pretty much just get gym teachers. And the mercy rule is b s. Just because a team beats a team by a huge number doesn't mean you stop the game so the losing team doesn't get to embarrassed. You keep playing until the game ends even if you lose by 200pts unless the losing team chooses to forfeit. This stupid mercy rule is only teaching kids to be weak and teaches them a sense of entitlement. It's like participation awards. If you don't come in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd then you don't get a medal or trophy period.

To answer your question about the disparity between public and private schools it basically breaks down to public schools only being able to draw players from their school district which in a large city could mean one particular neighborhood within the city vs the private schools which can recruit the best national and even international players. Snoops son played football for Bishop Gorman in NV even though he’s from LA because it’s a boarding school. Same goes for some of the other private schools they played against. And the kids aren’t actually bad kids and they are talented and play hard and are considered good teammates at the NBA level it’s just that their father is a hyperbolic douchebag. Even they have moved away from their father.
