except that the pronation should be driven by ISR and he shows it with the shoulder still held back and not getting ISR to drive that pronation....this isn't best and could be a bit risky...and without the proper angle between the forearm and racket, the pronation has limited additional benefit to the serve.

I feel quite IGNORANT right about now. I do no pronate AT ALL. I'm a 4.5 -5 level player with a fairly consistent serve but not much pop. I'm only 5'8" also. I'm going out to practice this ASAP. Thank you.

Too funny. I'm just the opposite. I'm a 4.0 and I've been pronating grip without thinking about it my whole life. Back in the day, coaches always taught NOT to pronate. Maybe it's because of the wood racquets (yeah, I'm old) ?? What's funny is that my serve is the biggest part of my game. I'm 62 yrs old, only 5'6", yet can still bang out 110mph serves every great now and then. When I was in my teens/twenties, I could bang out 110-115mph, but the new racquet technology has allowed me to maintain. Can't do it frequently, but I can still get there.

Check out the top pros serve in slow-motion. They swing towards the ball with the side of the racket coming up to meet the ball. At the moment of impact the racket face rotates to strike the ball center which is followed by the racket face continuing to the right and then proceeds down towards the left side of the body. This motion of the side of the racket coming up towards the ball creates great pronation. This motion requires a relaxed arm and fluid swing otherwise you can hurt your shoulder muscles. The pronation is just one part of the serve.

I’d like to add something which I saw Federer do when he is swinging his racket towards the ball with the edge. Prior to the moment of contact, he swings the racket a few inches towards his right before striking the ball with the racket full face to the ball and then pronating his arm/racket. This is done at the top by Federer and the instructor of this video as opposed to the roundhouse pronation swing the girl on the video is doing. Not saying I will serve like the FED.. but I did get better pronation & serve without putting stress on my shoulder.

To be accurate with terminology pro nation is what goes up . This reference to the motion is actually a downward forearm travel due an aborted elbow which naturally turns the palm outward . As the elbow stops the racket SUB nates causing increased speed with less effort . It is fully possible to match ball speed without this method but with notably more arm speed . The plus side of stopping the elbow at a high level is clearly the high level that the ball rises off the ground and the up body posture that goes with it . Forget about the hand turning out , Stopping the elbow does the trick . A topspin forehand has pro nation folks cause it goes up not down !

I would add that you should use a continental grip. If people who use an Eastern grip try this, it may not work well. It’s hard to get that wrist snap because the butt of the racket can hit your wrist. Of course, if you’re using an Eastern grip, you’re probably a beginner (I know there may be some advanced players who use it, but not many), so this video may not help until you switch. On a side note, in high school, I would use an Eastern grip once in awhile with extreme pronation to get the ball to slice the opposite way (not a kick serve, just hitting the other side of the ball). I would have to aim way to the left for it to go in. It confused opponents. I don’t do it anymore because it’s weird and probably not good for the arm.
@matyverona9407
@matyverona9407 3 года назад
Does the "wrist snap" really exist???? I much rather think of it in terms of natural pronation as a result of proper kinetic chain of fluid motion. I think some folks perceive a wrist literally bending because of the change in angle of the racquet head from contact to follow through. At contact it's straight. Post contact it's aiming more down ward. But that change in direction is clearly from pronation rather than bending the wrist.
@capricornmagic63
@capricornmagic63 Год назад
@@matyverona9407 I think one of the reasons we here so much about the ' wrist snap ' thing is because so many commentators use the term when they're trying to impart to the viewer how a player generates that velocity on the ball, they used it a lot when Sampras was playing. As you correctly say, it's all part of the fluid motion that starts from the ground up. Any coach who spends too much time trying to impart the wrist snap concept is not a good coach, he is holding back the development of his client and being paid cash that he isn't earning.

to hit the kick and slice serve you still pronate but instead of swinging towards the court your swing follows the baseline so that after you pronate the palm of your hand is facing the fence/wall behind you its tricky to explain it all in words cause there are other elements needed to achieving like where the contact point is and acknowledging the fact that the ball toss will be slightly different depending on whether you're hitting the kick serve or the slice serve but if you're only focusing on the arm (general consensus is the ball toss should be the same regardless of the type of serve but honestly that's a load of rubbish any coach that still teaches this are grossly misinformed and are not upto date with the modern game but to the untrained eye from the other side of the court all 5 types of serve when watching the ball toss will look very similar) short disclaimer there are actually 5 types of serve but most people only know, can do or teach 3 which are slice , kick and flat but there are 2 more which aren't commonly known and very few people can actually do it intentially

So many people don't understand how pronation works to increase racket head speed, here the student almost tries to pronate most AFTER hitting the ball. The reason she is struggling to pronate with speed INTO the ball is because the racket is too much in line with her arm, the racket is too stretched out and pointing upward at contact to take full advantage of the pronation movement. Her RACKET is straight up while the arm is at an angle, I think it would help to think of having the ARM straight up and your racket at an angle. The more you can bend the racket perpendicular to the arm the more pronation adds to the speed of the racket head, if the arm is straight in line with the racket the only thing pronation does is to simply turn the angle of the strings, which is what troubles most people when trying to improve this movement as they spray their serves in all sorts of unexpected directions. Even a few degrees further away from straight gives massive increase in racket head speed and will really make your serves pop as it increases the leverage you have over the racket, if everything is in a straight line you have very little leverage. This is obviously different than the 'wrist snap' which I think people often confuse for pronation which is simply the turning of a limb from 'inside' to 'outside' or supinated to pronated, you can pronate your feet as well! The other critical element is of course the shoulder position and coil, her starting position here seems a little too open at the start of the service motion; I realise this tends to happen more with the pinpoint stance than the platform, but being a little more side on can help make sense when trying to practice this idea of slightly more bend from racket to arm and in making the effects of pronation more pronounced. Another tip would be to start the non-dominant arm with a certain amount more bend at the elbow, at the moment during the serve she brings her front arm down with a straightened elbow which doesn't allow you to rotate your shoulders laterally into contact with as much speed, much like bringing your legs in when you sit on a children's roundabout and it makes you spin faster, a straight arm increase the mass outside of your center and increase centrifugal forces acting on it to slow you down. I also completely disagree with the idea that you shouldn't supinate your arm during the serve, this is an integral part of the stretch-shorten cycle and it happens, to a greater or lesser extent, on every professional service motion. But I do agree that trying to supinate into the ball as a means of adding slice or whatever is extremely flawed.

I think a problem is the word pronation is taken too literally. You are not just pronating the upper part of your forearm close to your hand, but also the lower forearm muscles, elbow, upper arm, shoulder. You can make the racquet approach the ball on edge and turn into the ball and to the other edge but use the wrong combination of muscles and not have the explosive power. A drill I use, is to hold a racquet with my arm extended straight in front of me with the racquet pointing up. Then without moving my arm, I lay it down to my right (supination). I pronate and lay the racquet to my left hitting a ball at the top.
@poida007
@poida007 3 года назад
Great drill! 👍🏻 Do you have similar drills to develop use of correct muscles and joints in the forehand? Including how to properly develop racket head speed with clean contact to create different ball trajectories mixing speed and spin rates?

Here is what I see on your explanation. The result is an improvement not because of pronation itself. Doing that she changes the muscles she uses right before hitting the ball. When she practices with the ball in the hand you can see how she can’t stop de hand right in front of here, the hand goes always a bit further in the swing, that’s because she accelerates the racket before and after hitting the ball implying muscles that you don’t need. Practicing the serve trying to stop the swing right after hitting the ball is what will really improve your serve. Accelerate you racket as much as possible before hitting the ball and jump the exact moment your racket starts going up to give more speed to the racket. Keep working the synchro while adding abdomen power at the same time your legs jump and the weight of you own head will do the rest. Picture yourself serving, if your racket goes as fast as after hitting the ball than before, you are doing things wrong, impliying muscles that you don’t need. Pronating makes the muscles you don’t need stops working. It’s a solution but what is really important is understant why.

Pronation happens naturally when you stretch your arm straight just like throwing a ball. You are not supposed to focus only to the wrist turn for pronation. it doesnt generate anything except weaken the power. The hitting in the right timing is more important than pronation. lots of pro players dont do extreme prontaiton on their flat serve.

Wrong. Pronation SHOULD happen naturally if the service motion is loose and the arm/racket travel without the server impeding it. He is saying to turn the wrist, but the pronation action is actually the forearm pronating, or turning towards the midline of the body. This action makes the racket face stay on the vector of the ball motion to hit a flat serve. This DEFINITELY results in a faster ball speed. If you are doing this and have a weakening of power on the serve then you are doing something wrong. Watch high speed videos on tennisplayer.net or just on youtube.

Should the racket drop happen naturally and slowly, or should I be doing the drop myself?

It should be a natural drop as the elbow starts to go up.

Can you explain the WHY of the pronation and how it increases speed into the ball?
@raymondhill3
@raymondhill3 4 года назад
It adds to the speed of the racquet head by rotating it rapidly around the wrist while the arm is still speeding it forward. Then the two speeds become additive.

That I understand, the speed, otherwise the ball wouldn't go faster. Do you really think that you can implement pronation to a player that has never been explained the why and how? I don't and I can give you tones of examples, and on the tour, 25 years ago, that tells you my age! However there is no reason why NOT to do it, except that how many sessions can you afford to spend on that topic? If your player has never been a good server then maybe, otherwise I think you're just ticking a box and you will never see the results of the pronation in oyur player's serve.

@@fabricemary2423 Yes, it can be taught quickly. But two conditions. First, the player must have the right grip, 100%. Then second, they must look for their hand turned out away from them just before completion of the follow through. And, be able to feel and recognize that for some reason it is now easier to serve at the same speed as they had before. After that they can go on to serve at a higher speed. If they do not use the right grip it will be hopeless and if they are not a good enough student to track that their hand is facing outward they won't make it. Also, if they don't recognize improvement, they won't make it. I find the biggest failing of tennis players is that they are not good students.

I now practice serving from trophy like part of your drill, served without a racket drop along time, now I am trying to do racket drop, was doing decent from trophy now when I drop racket struggling to get shoulder and elbow to do their part it is an isolated movement, I do great shadow swings where racket drops without trying to drop, I use a loose grip, relax arm but when I do a real serve i have to physicaly drop racket which makes it inconsistent any tips?

6:00 try to pause the video, her body is collapsing before she even hits the ball, she should try to keep her body aligned and oriented upwards towards the ball until she hits the ball, that will give her 20mph more

Upwards, always upwards! Expectation of having to hit towards the target actually inhibits most players from relaxing and letting the racquet swing up and out (pronation!).
