I have no issue with eminent domain being used for obvious public good, like rebuilding a narrow, rickety bridge. Private developer initiated Eminent Domain in the US is defined by recent Supreme Court case law: Kelo v New London... in short, a municipality may seize private property in order to sell that property to a private developer AS LONG AS the new owner has a plan that will "revitalize economically depressed areas" through job creation, infrastructure funding, or even just increased tax revenue. Basically, rich developers and corporations can convince towns to buy out slums, ghettos, etc if they promise to build shiny, new homes (usually apartments) and shopping centers. This area in Wisconsin most definitely did not meet the criteria of an economically depressed area which is why Mount Pleasant said it was only using eminent domain for public transportation and utilities easements. They could only legally seize land to build roads, sewers, powerlines, etc. They could not seize a house in order to build a private structure on top of the property. I'm glad this family chose to fight and I'm glad they won in court. The scales have tipped too far in favor of multi-million and billion dollar developers. In many populous states a private citizen cannot convert agricultural or commercial land into a residential parcel; however, a wealthy developer who wants to build a shopping mall or apartment complex can usually convince any town or county to allow them to convert the land zoning to whatever purpose they want.

When he opened the door, he said, on camera, "Don't come to my home". Excuse me, but you are a public servant, paid by the taxpayers. The first sign here should have been that Foxconn needs a major glass supplier to build a glass plant adjacent to their factory, but no one thought of that. The sheets of glass that they use cannot be transported, they're huge. The second sign was that the building I've seen is built like a warehouse, on a crushed limestone and concrete slab, and this is inadequate for assembling the screens that Foxconn was planning. The third sign is that this facility was first offered to the City of Kenosha, and they declined it, citing the expense of providing the huge cost of water (8 million gals/day, and sewer service. So, now Racine County is stuck with over 400 million dollars for providing utility service, and it's rumored that WE Energies (the local electric & gas providers) are going to pass along the cost of connecting the property to their customers, instead of to Foxconn. Where is any of this fair? Thank you, former Governor Wanker, for assisting in jamming this bad joke up the posterior of Wisconsin residents.

From what I have learned from years of listening to political arguments, the truth often lies between the two opposing views. As far as foxconn is concerned, they have a history of picking up and moving location or backing out of deals completely. That's where alot of this " broken promises" talk comes from. They have had success in a very tight industry by focusing on being flexible to meeting supply and demand issues in thier marketplace and changing coarse is likely to go hand in hand with that approach. As far as wisconsin giving foxconn money, that is false. Yes, they set up the largest state offered tax incentive to a company in my understanding but it is a 3 billion dollar savings to the company if they meet certain hiring and development criteria. They missed 2018 criteria by 18 employees or so and failed to reap any of 2018 tax incentives. So to date, they have not taking any money off the table and even if you have to give a tax break to a huge company that will pay massive amounts of taxes for years to come, thats how you attract them to your state. Ask AOC what happens when you make your state look unattractive like with Amazon. The last point here is the property owners were all offered 140% of the appraised value of thier property.( I believe vacant land was valued different from homestead) those that held out were offered less and less until you get a story like this. Foxconn needs to initiate eminent domain because this couple refuses to move after being offered more than reasonable value for thier home and trouble. Anyway foxconn just got the permitting to pour foundations for their buildings, the roads are progressing everyday (massive in height and width) and some accompanying bussiness and building are going up. Not to mention many vacant buildings in the surrounding towns are finally being razed and new development moving in. Foxconn will be a win for wisconsin but please research for yourself

Because of the surrounding area and what has happened to it, if they ever want to sell in future, they will find the value of their property has fallen. They may not mind living in an industrial area but finding a future buyer who feels the same may be difficult.
