$270 and a dream. Pro tip: If any of the original $270 backers drop out, their slot becomes available. 2 units showed up a few hours ago. Grats to the lucky people.
What the handheld community wants is the best price to performance. We already know what the best performance can offer but most can't handle the price. We already know what the lowest price handhelds are but know the limitations of performance. It's these mid-tier models that will dominate the market if done right.
Have to agree on what mid-tier is too. Personally, anything above $200 is really starting to push it for me. $200 I can fairly easily justify buying at almost any time, but above that and I might as well just start saving for a Steam Deck. EDIT: actually after skimming through the video, I'm changing my mind... $200 is still the easy price point for purchasing for me, but for ps3 and Xbox 360 emulation I'd be willing to spend up to maybe $500, $600 if it runs most games very well.
@@thomasbryans6547 Yeah and these PS2 emulating handhelds are never 200. A lot of these handhelds also hide hidden costs, like if a handheld says it’s 200, the shipping costs and import costs are crazy. That already makes it close to 300. So we’re all still waiting for a handheld that can emulate up until Wii U for the REAL price of 200. Gonna take a while.
@@Prodbytocile I have a Switch and love it. But I’m looking for a handheld that does non-Nintendo games. And with the Switch at $300 I was on the fence for a while, it wasn’t an easy day one purchase for me
If a company decides to sell something like these for $270, they would DOMINATE the market. $1400 is too much for a handheld for sure. All we have to do is be patient. EDIT: Decided to do it myself. Stay tuned #Nimbus
@@nolandderlugner1351 Yep,... For $1000 bucks you can buy a really nice gaming laptop, with a pretty decent GPU for sure, or you could build a bad ass gaming/production rig! No way in hell would I ever pay $1000 or more for a handheld that will be obsolete within a couple of years, if not sooner being how fast they pump out new ones Haha.
@@nolandderlugner1351 Couldn't agree more. Steam and Amazon have the power to release something like this for $270 and get the money back in other ways.
Yeah it's offering something different. They can't compete on price / performance so why try. For me that games I want to play on a handheld versus a desktop PC are quite different, there are tons of indie titles or older games that I've bought in Steam sales / got free off the Epic store, and my Deck is just overkill for them. Something smaller, lighter and ideally (but honestly, if it isn't it's not necessarily a dealbreak) cheaper definitely still appeals to me.
If Aya Neo ever mass produces these and sells them at that $269 price point I think they'd easily become one of the most popular emulation handhelds on the market. Near perfect GameCube and PS2 emulation at 1x to 2x resolution in a reasonably compact device for under $300 is what everyone seems to be clamoring for right now, and this particular version of the Air Plus definitely appears to deliver.
@@saintsasha9825 Something I have to remember as someone who owns both iphone and galaxy is that the iphone users can't just load up emulators without jailbreaking and they might not be too comfortable with it
I really dislike the trend these manufacturers have of doing hardware preorders with incentive discounts. Arguably worse than preorders for games. Sure, the people from this particular batch got lucky and underpaid on a device that appears to have turned out pretty well, but it could _easily_ have gone the other direction. And unlike a game that releases badly, there's very little hope that free updates will fix all the hardware issues on your preorder that turned out to be a lemon.
How the hell did it go from $270 to $600? That's more than twice the price. I understand $270 to $350 increase. But all the way up to $600? Better off just buying a steam deck
It still costs the same but you have to look for the 64gb version which is not avaible now but the 512gb with 16gb is avaible sich is much more expensive
@@FelixFPV179Thankfully, you could rock a 64GB steam deck model and just upgrade the storage drive to a bigger SSD capacity for much cheaper. So you're sorted out with the base model Deck.
hand helds getting crazy good with the last 2 years. honestly this is a good price point for this product and ngl if i didn't buy a 64gb steam deck and mod the storage i would probably pick something like this up. but ima ride and die on the steam deck cause after all said and done with upgrades i think im sitting cost to 700$ and still want to do a little more to it Edited: also wanna say that Steam deck will have endless support from people and community members who have it plus the ifix it support ANd steam support. its honestly a no brainer, wish it was SLIGHTLY more powerful but i know it will work for years to come and honestly it will hold its value very well i think as well. i mean if my Alienware Alpha R1 with a i7-4785T and 16gb of ram and ssd+wifi upgrade can sell for 400+ i know a portable from steam will retain its value
Hell ye b0rtger!!1!!!1!! Ride or die!!11!!! Fr though I fucking love my steam deck, next I just want something light with decent battery that can run PS2 and GameCube games, idk why we aren't there yet, especially since there's plenty of rockchip SBC's significantly more powerful than the rk3588 that they keep putting in EVERYTHING. I have a sneaking suspicion every company thought they could sell them like hot cakes and custom ordered hundreds of thousands of boards they need to move before upgrading to the now several generations old 'next level' chipset
At least your all maxed out and dont gotta worry about it . I bought the Odin pro and its already outdated after a year . Cant play 360, p3 , wiiu . Sucks
@@markwrobel9558 damn son, i feel ya there. ebay is showing them selling between 200ish on lowend to 350ish high end... honestly dawg, RIGHT NOW would be the time to sell it. and then invest in a deck or the Asus rog thats coming out. i dead ass might sell the deck for a rog but chance are slim. ill wait for release and reviews and by then i might have enough saved on the back end to grab both and sell off the one i dont like later. but again the deck is doing EVERYTHING i ask of it. every game i test that shows no support works flawless at locked 40fps or 60fps. i mean even my racing games works which i didn't expect
@@SamuelDoesThings2011 it is likely they'd price the handheld above $1000 so I am not hyped, besides Asus's 'ROG' brand is, in their eyes, a premium brand
I really don't understand what people looking at the ROG Ally are looking for. People have been complaining about every handheld device that isn't the deck because of their price; people are delusional if they think the Ally is going to be anywhere close sub 1000.
As expected, i3-1215U is an emulation powerhouse, which I already knew last year. For those who missed out on the super early bird of AYANEO AIr Plus, you can still buy the AYN Loki mini Pro for less than $400, which is still quite a bargain.
The only problem with that is the fact that it won’t ship till like Oct also which variant of the Loki do you think is better the amd Mendocino rdna2 or the Intel with integrated graphics
@@sinceredtb3227 Obviously I was talking about the model with the same chip i3-1215U, which has the best value for your money for emulation. The Mendocino GPU only has 2 CUs, so it gets crushed by the Intel iGPU.
@@jeb_leeds2928 You are right, the i3 model was cancelled. What a shame. The only option was a refund or "upgrade" to the AMD 7320U. Their reasoning was the number of orders did not meet MOQ, which I believe was only an excuse for the low margin of the i3 model.
1. Can you feedback to them not to lock it to 15W if they are not going to use inferior (compared to 6800u) cooling on this? What is the point of denying people the choice for nothing? 2. What is the 2 values for power shown? 3. When running at 540p, are you able to toggle integer scaling in Intel control panel? 4. Are you running something to fix/boost the GPU speed? Seems to stick to > 1000mhz despite a low % value. 5.Does the bios allow turning off of cores? E.g turning off performance or efficiency cores. 6. Any teardown video on hard/easy to change the SSD since Aya mention warranty is void if unit is opened to change ssd? This kind of defeat the purpose of a 2280 drive for consumers. 7. Any reason vulkan does not seems to be used for dolphin and pcsx2? 8. Switch is on handheld mode I suppose? On a side note, Xbox performance will probably be a lot better on Linux, not sure about XB360
I'll try to answer as many as I can 1. Yes. 2. Package power and GT power (GPU and shared with the main package power) 4. I am not. I would expect stuff like that to be better on a later board/bios revision. 5. Yes. 6. I have this filmed for the 6800u and I intend to talk about it in the main review. It's about a 6/10 in terms of difficulty. 7. Vulkan gave lower performance in a Wii game that I was testing and in Shadow of the Colossus, so I didn't bother trying to use it for the others. 8. Yes.
This is all a game of percentages now: The RP3+ can run 80% or more of Gamecube/Ps2 games nearly perfect. No PC games, but the streaming options are good. At $150 or so, its still the best value. The Odin is a little bit better on emulation, but more expensive and worse screen. Steamdeck is better for PC than this but more expensive. Check out the Phawx's analysis on the potential for a portable Series S using the AMD 7 series APU's. If at all true, and the big manufactures come into the segment, we may start to see the true potential of price/scale/performance unlocked
"The RP3+ can run 80% or more of Gamecube/Ps2 games nearly perfect" - seems like nearly perfect is very different for different people i guess if we stick to the "80%"
One of the lucky 100 here! Wish everyone could've got one at that price... Taki, please turn it up to 12 and crack that 360 emulation for Lost Odyssey! I believe in you. 😊
Yes, I'm overjoyed to be one of the lucky 100 who could buy this device for $269. I don't care if he doesn't pack something, I still have my Aya Neo 2 for that.
$270 would be killer, to bad the price on igg already has gone up so much. A company that would sell this handheld at this pricepoint and sees to a decent customer service would be very popular. It wouldn't be a Steam Deck killer, nor should it be, but it would definitely make a serious impact and set an example to the handheld industry
No one can sell this at $270. Only reason Ayaneo did, is to pay lip service to the original announced price and placate 200 fans. They basically admitted they're losing money on these initial units since they kept the same hardware across the range instead of cutting down from the 6800U version like they'd planned.
@@Strand0410 yeah any of these PC handheld companies (outside of Valve for obvious reasons) would just lose money with this. It's s why all of them haven't tried to do this
I was an odin backer, I got the email for this when it came out and backed the intel version cause I wanted to try something new and kinda just forgot about it and now i'm smiling ear to ear at what is my first look given that I was one of the people who got the earlybird odin backer price on it
PLEASE make a video that tells your viewers what the best devices currently on the market are! I've just discovered your channel, and I like your videos but I'm not a computer guy so a lot of this stuff goes over my head. When it comes to Rubik's cubes, the most popular RU-vidr makes a yearly video that explains his favorite and most recommended products based on top quality, best value, and budget, and makes bite sized explanations as to why each product made his list. It's a go-to for most beginner fans so it hugely benefits his channel and also helps his viewers make the wisest choice with their money without having to spend lots of time shopping around and educating themselves.
All I know is that, while we may not be in the maximum acceleration of Moore's Law anymore, computing still develops at an exponential rate, albeit with a bit smaller of a exponent. In just a year or two, handhelds like this are going to be absurd. There's a point where, similar to how PCs are pretty stable (I only just finally upgraded my decade old 4770K with 6 year old GTX 1080 Ti), we will get to a point where there's a handheld config that pretty comfortably plays new games and developers really aren't pushing systems to the limit anymore. Pretty soon high refresh 120 hz+ gaming, and higher resolutions, 4k standard, 5k+, will be commonplace on desktop, so a 1080p or 1440p handheld will be in that sweet spot of just being able to max out games at 60 fps because desktop chips playing the exact same games are doing so at 8k240hz lol
I feel like I need to know why they arent selling more at $270 as closure for missing this deal lmao. Is it simply because they know they can make more $$$ with the current price points instead of trying to break the market?
They're not making money selling at $270, especially as this shares almost exactly the same hardware as the more expensive models. They're definitely taking a dive on the $270 units so they can technically say they honoured the initial price.
I would love a handheld like this for PSP, PSvita, and Gamcube alone. I just don't want too many graphical glitches or stuttering. I know it's a lot to ask of a handheld. But we're getting closer and closer to what I am asking with how many companies are looking to steal market share after the success of the Nintendo Switch which is already 6 years old this year. :D
Ngl this strategy they did is not that good, cuz ppl that didn't get it for 270 will feel like they are paying more for something that is worth less, and end up getting something else.
Yeah man. I'm surprised we got Steam Decks on our local game stores. Albeit only available thru online shopping atm. But the mark up price for these devices is pretty high. And here I was hoping that Valve themselves would sell it here. Maybe they might but kinda unlikely with what I've seen.
I think you are right on the money! if this were $270 it would be a mega seller, Im in the market for an X86 handheld but I seem to be drawn to a 6800U-based model and as much storage and ram as I can get as I would like to use it as a desktop as well, there is so much choice though! If this were $270 I would buy one and buy a laptop with the rest of my budget
The Intel variant of the Loki Mini Pro can be ordered with this 1215u chip for an upgrade charge of $70 bringing the total price to $349. You can also double the RAM to 16gb for an additional $40.
For the price, I'd rather go with the $299 AMD model and pop SteamOS onto it. I'd be willing to bet the performance would be even better since SteamOS is pretty well optimized for AMD processors anyway.
I really want a serious competitor to blow it out of the water so that Ayaneo doesn't dictate the industry any longer. More competition = lowered prices for equivalent performance and/or equal adjusted priced models with better features. Until I see it I'm not getting one of these except a base steam deck if nothing changes for a while.
'dictate the industry' lol? Outside of niche emulation communities, no one's heard of Ayaneo. Valve is the market leader of PC handhelds by a huge margin, everyone else is swimming in their wake. Also, companies like Ayaneo or AYN aren't big enough to get custom APUs. They buy off-the-shelf componentsts, which means there's a floor to how cheap these can get. The answer isn't magically 'more competition'
I just want literally any somewhat powerful x86 handheld that can actually fit in my pocket. Only thing the market I'd really missing right now. Probably sticking with my steam deck till then
I'm waiting on the gpd win mini for that. 3ds size in my pocket. But honestly when I had a psp and 3ds they were always ina case and never in my pocket lol
@liamness for me I just cannot justify buying any handheld that is both too big to fit in my pocket, and also has small switch style analog sticks. In my opinion, the only acceptable place for small sticks is a pocketable handheld, and if it can't fit in your pocket might as well put full sized sticks on.
@eliotcole it would def be nice to have a retro handheld made specifically for n64 that has 6 face buttons, id pay $100 for something like that just to get the most ideal n64 experience, the button layout is rhe only reason I end up never playing n64 games on the handhelds I do have
I'm watching the video and I'm wondering what this thing is called I think it was only mentioned once briefly at the beginning and is nowhere in the description It's almost like he's trying to avoid saying the name
Taki, thank you for showing the 540p game play. People don't realize that a 540p game on a 6inch screen has a greater pixel density than a 32" 4K display... most of you that have a 4K display I know are not even running the thing at 100% display resolution cause you can't see shit. Edit: shit imagine a 7x40 cpu running games at 540p. But you can have everything maxed out. At 60fps. And with everything at max, you can buy a really powerful nvidia or intel gpu for an ego setup. That way whenever you went to play on a a bigger screen, the only thing you have to worry about is resolution and not internal settings
Would definitely be interested in any testing that you do with an e-GPU, because at price (even £300) I'd take this performance with (hopeful) amazo egpu over a steam deck in a heartbeat.
Wow at that price point, it would have been a steal. Sad that I missed out. My one question was GTA 5 and you had the video. I just need a Windows handheld just for my Epic games. I have the deck, but only want it for my Steam games.
The best game to test PS2 games on any emulator is Orphen: Scion of Sorcery. Progress to the first boss encounter with all the bugs. Why? Because, if the Emulator or Hardware can't render all of the bugs correctly, it will be choppy. You can determine which emulator works best, when there is little to no stuttering or lag. Another game you can test, that takes longer to get the test part, is Soul Calibur 2 for Xbox, PS2, or Gamecube emulators. You just need to get to Infernos stage, all of the fire effect particles do infact have a performance hit depending on the emulator/hardware. Happy testing peeps.
Ayn is working on the Loki Mini Pro which offers a Intel 1215U processor as an optional upgrade. 8 GB + 128GB with 1080p IPS and 48Wh battery. I pre-ordered mine for USD 330.- shipped. Unfortunately Ayn is terribly delayed with all their devices so who knows when this will actually ship.
I imagine the Retroid Pocket 5+ will perform as good as this. Yes, the 5+ not the 4+. I've been predicting low level Xbox 360 and PS3 emulation happening on the 5+ 😊
Bro! Love your vids, but could you please put a performance info bar on the main video? I watch mostly on my phone, and there’s no way anybody can see your onscreen fps and such on the device that you’re testing…
THIS is what we've been waiting for! So tired of the high end models with the same processor, THIS is what I've been waiting for! Now hopefully we can get that with the Ayn Loki.
With the rumors and leaks about 14th gen being mobile only, having L4 cache and and tile GPUs all with using the intel 4 process (7nm with yield comparable to tsmc 5nm)... maybe intel is going to surprise us! Though the price will be... impressive too XD.
I don’t know why a lot of modern tech tubers talk about TDP as though it’s some type of performance metric. All TDP tells us is the safe range of power consumption by the chip. Sure, higher TDP means more performance headroom, but TDP balancing is done by the system itself, so using the word “boost” in this case makes little sense to me.
I managed to pick up the $270 Ryzen one about 5 hours after it came out. Was refreshing the page the whole day. Do you think the Ryzen one will have worse performance in games?
Its crazy give it a year or two and for 150 I bet we have some crazy stuff. Sure that may seem to low but the number of people that would pull the trigger and buy these as gifts would sky rocket. Im still waiting for a high quality device for under 60 dollars quick shipped that can play up threw n64/ ps1 with an easy UI. This price point is perfect for gifts and I would buy like 5 of them.
I want a PC in the same format as the GPD Win 2 (the 3DS-XL size, non-Max model). With a modern AMD CPU and integrated graphics, this thing would rock. I don't really care if I'd have to pay 3 times as much as this, admittedly cool, handheld.
Don't really have the money for these lol so i can't really worry not getting one but since the steam deck i been simping these Cool to see these improving
