I went track side to catch a nice train I saw coming from Tucson and waiting more than an hour with nothing passing by then a EB stacker passes by me only to block out the coming desired WB manifest. It passes by behind the Stacks so I miss the lead engines. No trains for 80+ minutes just to have them meet just where I stand waiting with 70 miles to the right and 70 miles to the left to meet at. Just nuts.

Railroads are not altruistic and they couldn’t care less about traffic levels on the highways. The only thing they look at is the number of teu’s they’re carrying, what rate they’re giving and how bad is the Panama Canal expansion going to hurt them. When the shipping lines can carry their boxes on post-Panamax ships through the canal and up the east coast the need for doublestacks will drop-a lot. It’s already happening. It’s the reason why there was suddenly the explosion in mid-train DPU’s: to cut labor which is always the biggest expense. Soon, they’re going to have to bite the bullet and start looking at alternate power sources. Our enemies would love nothing more than to interrupt our fuel chains, better be prepared for it. We’ll know railroads are serious about their business when they make some noise about autonomous trains. The real issue is if railroads are going to win enough that they don’t end up going back to exclusively hauling commodities. If they don’t get their act together that’s exactly where they’re going.

@@gibsonclan1ablea dry bulk pneumatic car equals 4 trucks fully laden. I drive said trucks and load into/out of the rail cars all the time.
@rossjohnson1872
@rossjohnson1872 9 месяцев назад
Shipping by intermodals is inefficient because of less interior space and reduced payload because the box + trailer weight much more. So for 100 containers you see go by on a train, subtract 13%. 87 trucks could haul that. But it will take more than 100 anyway. Why? Because railway is allowed to ship overloads. Example is steel coils which will have to be split onto two trucks at end of the rail line to comply with surface road weight regulations. I have pulled both road and intermodals. "Sea cartons" on carriages are dangerous to drive around compared to regular road rigs. Not meant for long distance all conditions driving.

Good looking roadbed , nice smooth track and ballast looks as if a surfacing gang or tie gang had been thru recently . Cribs are full of ballast and dressed very well . Good ballast maintenance is really needed in the heat in that part of the country to keep the welded rail under control . Great video .

Strangely, I sure enjoyed this video. I thought about train safety, derailment specifically. You can hear some trailers calling for maintenance, and I imagine sometimes they scream before they break. Having acoustic and infrared inspections of passing trains can now easily be analyzed computers. Short of a congressional Mandate and Trump's presidential deregulation, I would think such a system would pay for itself with preventive maintenance preventing catastrophic failures. Getting freight trains to leave Los Angeles and arrive in Chicago with no driver and no stops along the way, like the Rio Tinto Coal Mine in Australia no longer required to make three stops for new train crew ultimately is the future.

Automation of these trains saves the owners money I'm sure. As if they didn't have enough of it. But it also means that in an emergency, there's almost nobody there to do anything about it. Railroad crews used to have meaningful jobs. Now they're just glorified truck drivers.

What does ballasted to 432k pounds mean?
@Rustyrailhead
@Rustyrailhead 9 месяцев назад
I am guessing they added more weight to the engine to give it more traction force on the tracks. It is like a lighter engine can't pull as much as a heavier one.

How do you know? Now just filling the fuel tank would add quite some weight I guess: Assuming 10000L that may add 9t (since diesel is lighter than water, but it may be closer to 10t actually).

A standard ES44AC is around 425,000 to 430000 lbs, which is still heavy, Some engines; CSX was the Railroad to make it happen asked GE to build a 432,000 lb locomotive for heavy haul service in the mountains. these "heavies" have special wheel slip controls and a different computer program so when the rails are wet in rain or snow the locomotive can still produce their max tractive effort at slow speeds. once it gets moving the engines do the same work as a standard engine so the Railroads try to use them in coal service or helper services on the mountains to make the best use for them. now GE did make a fleet for BNSF which are 436k but its a small number so far 100 at most. now how they added the weight is simple, they added concrete or steel plates to the main frame.

@Rustyrailhead
@Rustyrailhead 9 месяцев назад
I am saying that of all places to have a train meet is right in front of me when there is some 80 miles of open track with no trains to the right and to the left. So, if I went down just 2 miles to another crossing I would not have the beautiful manifest blocked by the container train. Of all place for it to happen was just there in front of me. Fate This engine I guess was rebuilt at a time since it was purchased and made heavier to add more traction and maybe too more power. Page says, C45AH - (GE Model ES44AC [Tier 3], ballasted to 432,000 lbs as of May 2014. *R. Craig.

Then this EB IM trains shows up and as it passes the train I wanted to film too shows up and on the back tracks which was now being blocked form view. I mean, What are the chances in a 160 mile section that both trains meet where I am.
