Thom Sonny Green from indie rock band Alt-J takes us through the creative process for the track 'Philadelphia', from their new album 'The Dream'. Although the song gave him some trouble he is really happy with the way it turned out.

It’s funny he says about the drums being difficult to add because I personally feel chills every time the drums come in. They’re arguably the most impactful bit

this album grew on me so much, esp this song. I was confused at first. but also seeing them play it live- its like oh okay I get it. and now I randomly have "PHILIDELPHIA!" in my head

This was one of those songs that stops you in your tracks when listening through the album. as much as i wanted to continue on I had to replay the track over and over, such a unique sound. still my favorite song on the album and still bump my head heavy to it.

My ears rolled their eyes with bliss at this song. I really enjoy the sounds you play with from the 7th song and onward. The album really picks up with Chicago and keeps the flow going until the end of the album.

Amazing how some tracks in the album that were not recognized as singles becomes your favorite. Love that song, so magical!

I love this band and for some reason I was having a hard time connecting with the album initially but one day I was driving home from a work trip and put it on and then this song played and it was so unique and it suddenly captured my attention. It ended up being the song that gripped me from this album and right now this is my go to album because it has so much range and depth. As for the percussion, at the end when the drums kick in heavy with the strings, it’s one of my favorite groove sections of all time!

Is it about freedom? There was an injustice committed, and we're sing to Philadelphia about aggressors, is this song meant to invoke a patriotic feeling?
