A rather rare documentary detailing the the daily schedule, life and work of Sir Thomas Allen in the years 1985/86, originally produced by Tyne Tees Television and probably broadcast on Channel 4 in 1988 as a supplement to the ROH 1988 production of 'Don Giovanni'.
An exceptionally insightful documentary on the life and modest personality of one of Britain's greatest baritones.

I´ll never forget one evening in Covent Garden, 15 years ago...when I was leaving in London...it was raining, and in the middle of the mist Sir Thomas appeared out of the blue, with a deep blue coat...he was sooooooooooo handsome I nearly died...

You're very welcome. And yes, his rendition of 'O Waly, Waly' was tremendously touching. A great man indeed. The opera world is very fortunate to have such a gifted artist to represent the best of his profession.

At 3:17 when Thomas Allen is coming out of the tube he looks and acts like any ordinary guy. You would never know that he was a world famous opera singer. I really like his unassuming character, as well as his fabulous voice and presence.

Aw, that's sweet. But it's amazing that you could see him (already no mean feat) when you were only 13. As for the documentary, I have my friend to thank for sharing this wonderful gem with me since like you, it has definitely confirmed my admiration for his life and work. Glad you enjoyed it!

Sir Tom's modesty is one of the many things, I think, which really makes one admire him. Being the world famous opera singer that he is, he has every right to be proud of his achievements but he doesn't do that. I think it has a lot to do with where he comes from as well as his upbringing.

Thank you. Do you know anything about his breathing technique please? I once seen a clip he did with Antonio Pappano, and he seemed to tell him to simply breath in then relax. I wonder does he draw his abdomen in on the inhale, then release it when phonating?

In that case, the Met office in the UK should create a special warning especially for him ;-)

I'm not entirely sure whether they were contact lenses, it might be just the lights being reflected in his eyes. But they look suspiciously lighter/brighter than usual in Part 4 at around the 06:58 mark.

Sir Tom's Onegin is always fantastic but the wig, makeup, and not to mention those ridiculous contact lenses (he's got a lovely pair of brown eyes, why bother with blue-ish lenses?) make this production difficult to watch. I'd much prefer it if they allowed him to sing it sans all of those things and just looking like himself.

Hmm. You seem to possess such unusual "information" about Sir Thomas.
