It was only two days until Christmas and the final preparations were being made for a carol party being held at Tidmouth station. All the engines are working hard, setting up the decorations and delivering goods and passengers. Sir Topham Hatt wanted this year's carol party to be an extra special celebration. Sir Topham Hatt is waiting very impatiently when Thomas arrives and tells the tank engine that their Christmas tree has arrived on Sodor just in time for the holidays and he asks Thomas has to fetch it while Duck will look after Annie and Clarabel. Thomas asks Sir Topham Hatt if he and the other engines can sing the carols with the visitors and Sir Topham Hatt promises to think about it. Thomas is very excited about his important job and rushes off, collecting the tree safely but on the way home, he gets stuck in a snowdrift. Thomas knows that he must get back in time and whistles for help, but he cannot get out of the heavy snow. Suddenly, a snow drift slides down from the hillside and buries Thomas and the tree.
Back at the yards, the engines are waiting for Thomas to return and his delay begins to make them cross, but they are soon quieted by Sir Topham Hatt, who tells them that snow has brought down the telephone lines and they must assume that Thomas is stranded. Everyone now feels sorry for Thomas, and Donald and Douglas, cold but confident, set off to the rescue. They soon reach a snow drift much deeper than the rest they have come across. A very faint, muffled cry for help is heard, and Donald thinks he hears something, but Douglas thinks it may be the wind. Hearing the cry carefully, they realize that they are at the drift where Thomas is buried.
When the workmen arrive, it took some time to decide how to dig away all the heavy drifts of snow. Thomas' driver and fireman, who had taken shelter in a nearby cottage, join the rescue, and at last, Thomas and the precious Christmas tree are freed from the snow. Thomas follows the twins home, and they all arrive just as night falls. Sir Topham Hatt greets his engines warmly and rewards them by granting permission to sing the carols. The engines happily puff away to the station and everything is soon ready for the unveiling. Sir Topham Hatt counts to three and suddenly, as if by magic, the station is flooded with lights, with Sir Topham Hatt declares three cheers for Thomas the Tank Engine and all his friends. Just then, everyone hears a strange sound from the sky and moments later, Harold the Helicopter touches down gently in the snow and joins the party, bringing the guest of honor himself: Santa Claus, much to everyone's joy. As the carols begin, Thomas whispers to Percy that although getting stuck in the snow was no fun, it was worth it for the celebration and wishes everyone a Happy Christmas.
