Dr. Byrd, a proud native Nashvillian, is a third generation physician to serve the Tennessee medical community. Like his father and grandfather before him, Dr. Byrd attended the Vanderbilt School of Medicine to obtain his doctorate degree. His colleagues have referred to him as the “Godfather of Hip Arthroscopy”. He performed his first surgery in 1990. Dr. Byrd brings a sense of temperance and responsibility for surgeons taking on the roll of hip arthroscopy.
His mentor Dr. James Andrews taught him the basic principles of knee and shoulder arthroscopy that Dr. Byrd later applied to his work the hip. In 1994, Dr. Byrd published an article that has become the foundation for how most people perform hip arthroscopy today. A year later, he developed a set of instruments to reliably perform this type of surgery that continue to be the most popular and used worldwide.
Dr. Andrews also taught Dr. Byrd the art and philosophy of sports medicine. More importantly, Dr. Byrd learned how to treat regular people like they are special and how to treat special people like they are regular folks.
An expert in his field, Dr. Byrd became the team physician for the Tennessee Titans in 1997 ind has worked with them in what he likens as his weekend job.
From a practice perspective, Nashville Hip Institute (NHI) provides opportunities to look at complex and unusual hip disorders of all types. According to Dr. Byrd, “The hips are attached to patients, attached to people who have their own lives to live.
