We did figure out how to make gold. I've read Russian scientists had a nuclear reactor lined with lead. After it running for years they discovered some of the lead had transformed into gold. Probably radioactive gold. Unfortunately it did not grant eternal life. EDIT: Thinking about this longer, it seems like the lead would have melted from the heat. I'm not sure where the lead was in relation to the uranium fuel. Maybe far enough to not melt, but close enough to absorb neutrons and transform.

Also the description of his "bumble bee plane" is just a helicopter. Also the electric trains, except for water power (for the most part). Also steel furniture being more common then wood (though both are defeated by the pressed woodchips). Also wireless signals better than early 1900's telephone signals. "Machine brain" is also correct in modern digital age. Even his view on farming is correct, at least largely.
@jersood9059
@jersood9059 3 года назад
he did predict all of it only 20-30 years ahead though. And no, he didnt predict just the currency being detached from gold at all. At least not without gold being easily manufactured. Bumble bee plane was not achieved either, not in the mass scale at least. Helicopters dont use wings to fly, like bees or other insects. They use rotors, which is a developed propeller. Not to blame him, but his assumptions were pretty casual expectations of these extremely optimistic times.

@Bill DeVille he was, and it just shows how much overconfidence people had in science during the Western golden age. There were no huge wars for over 50 years, and people were thinking as if all there's left to do is to improve ourselves and rely on science. To the point where Edison tried to predict things that are "rationally" progressive (like nickel books) but without taking comfort into account or, frankly, common sense into account. People were living inside a dream, which is partly to blame for the devastating WW1, which was met with enthusiasm and hopes of quick victory on all sides. Much like the Western world in 1990-2008 / 1990-2001

Paper is far, far cheaper, is easier to glue together while maintaining flexibility, easier to recycle and far easier to read on. Given its silvery tint it would be far more difficult for people to read on it (distinguish letters). Imagine reading a nickel book with the sun right above you. The reflection would practically blind you and it would get really hot in your hands. Then you have to worry about nickel-poisening, allergies and its magnetic properties (don´t you dare leave your wallet on your book). So yeah paper is far better :D

I wonder what he would think about how we think gold was made now. Gold is a very heavy metal, and usually, only way to make an element so heavy is through the heat an pressure of nuclear reactions. (Nuclear fusion to be specific) As it turns out, gold was not made on the earth. Much, if not all, of our heavy elements were created before the formation of the earth, the iron most likely came from another dead star that exploded, and even heavier ones most likely came from the intense pressure of a neutron star, the 2nd most dense things in the universe.

He would probably realize that manufacturing gold takes too much energy and thus is technically possible but too expensive to do profitably. After this the handler was fired and the circus deemed Topsy a liability. Nobody else would buy the elephant so the circus that owned it decided to euthanize Topsy. To give you an idea of how callous the circus was, it originally planned to hang Topsy and charge an audience admission to watch. The only reason it didn't was because the ASPCA stepped in and prevented that; electrocution (combined with poisoning) was considered the humane alternative.

To be entirely fair to Edison, he didn't do too bad Part 1: Gold to Radium: Right now we actually can create gold artificially by irradiating platinum or mercury. The process isn't anywhere approaching efficent or profitable enough to replace gold mines, so Edison's philospher stone is still out of reach. However, he was correct that it would be possible, he was incorrect that Radium would be part of it though. Part 2: The bumblebee flyer: Going to be extra generous and say "Drones"? Technically we do have drone "taxis" today and large swarms of drones are being programmed to do all kinds of things, which I suppose would be similar to a bumblebee. He's dead wrong on us needing to take a lot of cues from bees in order to fly "Very far, very fast, or very safely". The "inclined planes" thing could be talking about helicopters or VTOL aircraft used in the military like the V-22 Osprey. "bumblebee flyers will take is 100 miles an hour, or more" .... if it was that slow I'd just drive. Part 4. Something better than the telephone: Well he wasn't wrong that phones would get a lot better compared to his time. Part 5: Machine brains: the title sounds like AI, but what he's describing sounds closer to 3-D printing. Unfortunately the garment industry hasn't really changed all that much. Most clothing today is made by extremely poor workers in developing countries such as Haiti, bangladesh, or china paid in what's essentially slave wages... Part 7: International conflicts This one turned out to be so wrong it deserved a shout out considering this was made in 1911, about 3 years before the start of WW1. Also, I didn't know Edison was a Marxist advocating global revolution, the more ya know. extra!: "There will be no poverty in the world 100 years from now" Poverty is subjective to every age, and thus will exist in every age, most of the poor in the developed world live better than the kings and emperors of Europe 200 years ago. That being said, poverty globally, even compared to poverty in the 1911 west, exists in vast nummbers. As someone who deals partially in sales, NEVER say "cheap", the word you're looking for is "inexpensive". ------------------------------------------- All in all, it's no crazier than a lot of views from the future back then, he didn't do THAT bad considering he's trying to predict things 100 years into the future. I'd give him 2.5 out of 7 (considering most of his answers were partially right if taken generously)

As societies advance people have the option for a work-life balance either focusing on their careers and neglecting less tangible things or focusing on relationships or focusing on spiritual enlightenment. The end result is that people who saw career and success as the goal will have far more wealth than those who saw it is merely a necessity and we're happy to sacrifice it for the sake of family or other considerations. It seems very possible that in the future people will be able to get by working only a couple hours a week while at the same time those who are married to their work will be able to spend their rare vacations in outer space.

That elephant was going to be put to death anyway. Topsy did kill like 5 people and was already scheduled to be shot. All he did was change the mode of execution from firing squad to the chair, in effect

@Tirocoa 3 года назад
@@flightlesschicken7769 I don't really see how that justify anything. His intention aside, he is using a pretty much unknown technology that its effectiveness of killing something hasn't been proven yet. He could be condemning an animal to an even more painful death.

@flightlesschicken7769 3 года назад
@@Tirocoa Perhaps, but I wasn't saying he was justified to fry animals on the "chair," rather that that elephant was already condemned to death. People like to look at that as him condemning a harmless and beautiful elephant. But that is simply not the case. Edit: However, it did turn out to be a pretty effective method of execution. I honestly wonder if it lead to the adoption of the electric chair in prisons

@BurnoutDurb

@@Tirocoa You're completely incorrect and should study more. At the time, electrocution was considered the most humane death, which is why it was implemented as a method of execution for humans too. Also, the ASPCA asked Edison to step in because the last executed elephant was poisoned, shot and hanged over several hours and died a painful, torturous death.

If anyone is curious, the "bumblebee flyers" Edison describes were invented and are autogyros, ie a plane with a rotor for vertical takeoff and fixed wings and regular propellers for thrust. They were invented in the 20s, but unlike Edison's prediction they didn't really work so well and never really took off (pun intended) as a better form of air transport. Which just goes to show that some far fetched ideas can be feasible...but also not be the Next Big Thing

Edison actually makes some astute observations here that many people take for granted but wasn't obvious in his time. The electification of transportation came true. Most buildings use concrete with steel rebar and furniture usually has a steel skelleton with soft finish so he was actually correct on both. Factories indeed make finished goods now and not just parts. We also have mechanical minds (computers). Last but not least his idea that Radium could produce gold was actually true. It's called Nuclear Transmutation and we've first done so in the 1950s in nuclear power plants (which uses radiation similar to Radium) to turn Lead into gold. He was only off about steel books (but you could argue E-Books are steel books). And about purely steel furniture but that's because he looked at the world from an economics perspective and not a user-experience perspective. He could see that steel would economically replace other materials and it did. He just didn't have the extra insight to also reason that people still wanted soft sofas and thus add things to the steel.
