Although I still stand by that Arc is better than Nitrogen, I do have to say that Nitrogen definitely screwed up less renders of the engines. Probably because they had the models. The fact that they would go all the way to Wales to study the actual basis' is entirely worthy of my respect. But I don't see why they couldn't have just looked up Douglas' measurements online or scale measure some photographs for Duncan's render. Arc could've done that no problem. I bet Nitrogen would've gone the the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway if they were given the task. Because while the Arlesdale engines renders are good, they do have a few things worth nitpicking. I think the reason for Flying Scotsman's large boiler and face Is because they wanted him to look enough like Gordon and seem like he belongs in this universe, but in reality, they should've gone all the way with him like Ryan, because in the Railway Series, he does mention how Gordon looks different and Gordon explains about his rebuild at Crewe. I think that excuse could've worked here. You're 100% right about the express coaches. However, I will admit that the faces are very well done, and the . When Nitrogen animated Duck, Donald and Douglas' faces in Season 12, Duck's face shrunk and all three lost their cheekbones. When Arc rendered them again, they fixed Ducks face and gave them their cheekbones back. I bet if Duncan did return in "Blue Mountain Mystery" he would've had his lame seasons 6-12 face like the rest of the Skarloey Railway engines. But Arc back dated his face and gave him back his wrinkles. The RWS touches on most of them are good too, like Ducks black running board, Donald and Douglas' stepladder in the middle of their running boards, and their accurate funnels. The fact that they did try to fix Duck is a good sign, maybe now they'll start trying to fix up more engines when they get back on their feet again after going bankrupt and all. But Imo the renders don't really matter since its the characterization that's important.

If only Wilbert Awdry was around for the CGI Series. Actually no, if only Christopher Awdry wasn't hiding in the shadows and ignoring the TV Series in general. May I suggest doing a Top 5 TTTE CGI Voice Acting video. UK & US Comparisons :)

When Duncan returned, I thought that something was wrong about him and after looking at the classic model series and Railway Series. I realised what it was.

I actually like that they rendered James a little bigger. He was always interpreted as a bigger engine, but it never made sense to me in the model series that he was the same size as Edward.

I totally agree with you on all marks, you perfectly outlined all the biggest rendering issues of the current series. The animation team does an incredible job for the most part, but there are always things they can do to improve and altering the models in accordance with these observations would do wonders. Not a single comment was out of line. I like how you paid attention to the fact that the engines traditionally look somewhat simplistic in the TVS, and didn't just bag on Scotsman for not being identical to the real engine. While I love the A3s, I'm glad Scotsman resembles TVS Gordon. I thought I was just imagining his face being too big, good to hear others think it too! Great video with well informed points, it epitomizes the issues with the current renders and, while I can certainly live with them, I'd love to see the team take your advice!

In regards to oliver, 1400 auto-tanks are small engines, VERY small though they're still a decent height. In the model series, Oliver was woefully underscaled. My biggest gripes with the CGI model are that the Cab spectacles on the front are too small, as are the driving wheels

I do agree with you about Duncan. His proportions are pretty small, but at least his cab is square just like it was in the model series (and just like Peter Sam's, Rheneas', and Rusty's). But I think all the other models are fine in my opinion.

The thing about CGI Oliver and Toad that bugs me since they returned in Season 18 is: WHY IS TOAD BIGGER AND LONGER THAN MR. OLIVER? AND WHATS WORSE IS, HE IS BIGGER THAN ALL THE OTHER TANK ENGINES! HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE A SMALL CHEEKY BRAKEVAN AND NOT A TENDER ENGINE!

I agree with on all except for Jack. To be honest, I prefer his CGI render to his model. His CGI version actually has somewhat of a basis, and thusly feels more believable. Also, he's kind of adorable. Everyone else though, yeah. I think Porter could use some fixing too, although there's nothing really to go off of for him.

I agree with the Flying Scotsman's boiler and face being way too big. If they made them the same size as what you would see in the Trainz DLC website "WildNorWester3D," then that would've made him look a lot better.

I am most bothered by Oliver's render. They made him so much smaller. Toad towers over him, it even carried over into his Bachmann model.

If only he knew at the time what a pile of trash TTTE is going to turn into in 2021.... Edit: Also,considering Duncan is a bit similar to Dolgoch/Rheneas,can't they just mod the model for Rheneas to make Duncan?

They should remodel these engines. Maybe also give a line to show they’ve been fixed, like “Do you like your new boiler” (Duncan and The flying Scotsman), or “That’s odd. You seem a lot bigger now” (Express coaches and Oliver)

What? Not even an honourable mention for Edward? His CGI model is nearly as squat as Oliver's if not squatter. I think they made his frames too wide and/or his boiler too small. He looks more like a Victorian engine than a workhorse in terms of proportions. He may be old but he's not that old. He used to look more like James in that regard which actually made sense seeing as they both came from the Midlands. This has bugged me ever since I first saw Edward's new CGI model in Hero of the Rails and it continues to bug me that it still hasn't been fixed after 7 WHOLE YEARS. I mean come on Arc/JFE, get your act together.

From what I heard...The express coaches were based off thomas' proportions. This is why they are the same size as Thomas. It also may explain the width issue.

I new James was too tall. I kept looking at James's introduction in The Adventure Begins, and I saw that James was too big. It's a shame if you think about it.

I also really loved the special express coaches a.k.a Spencer's coaches in the model series, in the CGI series their shape and design were changed drastically so much compared to their models. The animators should definitely fix that.

I agree with you about Flying Scotsman and the express coaches. Another inaccuracy with Flying Scotsman, is that his boiler is supposed to be tapered. It's noticeable if you look at the real engine side-on. Gordon has this inaccuracy too. The CGI Flying Scotsman is at least more accurate to a real A3 than Gordon is. Gordon in the TV series suffers from been too short and fat. Both are also missing the framing over their rear wheels. As for the express coaches, it's a pity Nitrogen & Arc didn't use the series 2-5 models as a basis, as those looked like real coaches, and were more size accurate to real life than the series 1 & series 6-onwards models. If I'd have done Flying Scotsman, I'd have had him with a single chimney, no smoke deflectors and proper 8-wheeled corridor tenders.

I am in agreement that there are some things, like the Express Coaches, and Duck's resized render issues, that need to be tweaked just a little to make them just right, but I don't see why Oliver being changed up is so huge a deal. The size, sure, might be a little on the small side, but I appreciate the extra detail here and there. To me, it makes Oliver feel that much more real, having those little extra bits for running purposes, and what have you. I'm not sure I see what's wrong with Jack either... but that for me is based more in personal opinion. I rather like the square body, myself. I do agree that there are a plethora of small issues with Scotty and Duncan... why the red footplate? Seriously. This made me laugh, and think, and I like that. I hope we see more from ya in the new year... this year... hopefully. Please? Maybe you can cover the top worst CG eps? Or the worst locations? I want more worst :p

I never realized how bad Duncan's render really is. I thought there was something up with it. Hes really the only engine that fails the 'at a glance' test.

How about Porter? Hes so low his buffers don't even make contact with any cars, and his cab is so squished, you need to be a toothpick to even get in.

I am so glad that you made this video! Hopefully it gets out there and some big person in a suit at Jam-filled will notice. And now my thoughts on all of renders mentioned: Express coaches, completely agree, not only need to be wider, I think they should be curved at the bottom to resemble the class Mark 1 coaches everyone loves to associate with steam railways! Duck is very obviously in need of modifying and I completely agree that the mistakes now evident from his rescaling are unforgivably bad! Its those stupid wheels that they've taken from every character ever.. Arc / Jam filled seem to do a good job of building their engines around this particular set of wheels. Why they don't just go ahead and make some slightly bigger ones is baffling as it would solve a lot of the issues for Duck, Oliver, Donnie and Dougie, Ryan etc.. The problem with Flying Scotsman is that they didn't create him from scratch. They took Gordon's model and modified it to resemble a more detailed Flying Scotsman. I think as a link to being his 'brother' this works. But this is a problem with the size of both of these engines. In Thomas world, consistent dimensions don't exist. The Rails are rather thick and toy-like in the CGI series and this helps to distract from the realism. I can't blame Arc for FS's render because Nitrogen made Gordon. and they based him off of the classic model. I think that in general, Gordon and Flying Scotsman's wheels are fine, but their running boards are much too wide, and their boilers are definitely oversized. Flying Scotsman's face looks bigger because of the smaller curve on his footplate. The reason i know its their boilers that are oversized is because of another character, Spencer. His Dimensions are much more proportionate to an A4 than Gordon and FS's are to A1's. Under Spencer's streamlining is a boiler of the correct width and a footplate of the correct width too. This has always annoyed me but I feel that this problem is unchangeable. Oliver, again I refer back to my statement about taking the same wheel set and just building the characters around them. If they just made a set of slightly larger wheels, ones that were in-between the size of these ones, and Gordon's wheels, then we would have so suitable wheels that would fix Olivers Height, Make Duck look less squatted, make Donald And Douglas taller and slightly improve Ryan's wheelbase. I'm fine with his other details on his other body. They just need enlarging and need to be placed on stilts. I'm hoping his Bachmann model which seems to be quite tall, gives hope for the series. Jack is engh, I've never really too much cared about Jack and the Pack, and the design of a front loader isn't really that interesting to me. They basically pulled a 'Bob the builder' revamp on him in attempts to make him more like a front loader I guess? he was one of the first returnees for Arc so was probably a challenge there. James is just too wide. Running board stretches out wide than his tender. Just scale down his Upper body and boom. Finally Duncan, I've not really got much to add here, all I can say is that I feel like his render is an awkward blend between the real life basis, and the TVS model. Basically picking all the wrong proportions. The one thing that triggers me about his render the most is his buffer beam and footplate, his footplate seems to curve behind the buffer beam which seems to be stuck on top. What a weird and awful design. Love the video, I like typing long comments, especially at half midnight. Good night all!

I preferred when they used actual models, THAT is how it was in my childhood. When they switched to CG the show just lost all it's simplistic charm.

Although the character designs don't bother me too much; I do strongly agree with Oliver and Duncan's renders. the thing that bugs me most about Duncan's CGI render is his boiler, it looks far too cheap and simplistic; Arc need to fix him up pronto.

i'd say they messed up vinne the "American" competitor loco in the great railway show, simply b/c HE'S A CANADIAN, from the canadian national railway, and they thought the new jersey accent would hide that.

Yeah, you're being rather nitpicky. 3D animation and modeling is incredibly hard, especially without proper measurements and reference. I myself am studying animation, and possibly hope to join the Thomas team. That said, fixing all of Duck's downsizing issues would be time that they likely don't have to spend unless they drop him for a whole season and make his remodel a whole project on its own. The same goes for Oliver. It's highly likely they'll never get fixed simply due to the scale if the project and the fact that they aren't "important characters" outside of fanservice.

Gordon and Toby's renders need some improvement as well. Gordon is a bit too large, but is is not horrendous. Also, his driving wheels are a bit too far apart, but not so much as Oliver's. Toby is really short. Just take a look at him when he's pulling Henrietta. He should be larger than she is, not the same height.

I agree with what you've said about James when you look at the clip you used I think from Pouty James or All in Vain he just TOWERS over the fat controller he is my favorite of mix traffic engines buts still..... Then for Donald and Douglas (in my own opinion) I don't see much wrong with them physically especially when they returned in the legend of the lost treasure because I was more happy that the Scottish twins had returned... if I had to add someone to this list it would be Henry not because of his design more because of his personality it makes me very unhappy about them taking his old smug and conceded self and changed him into a childish worrier and how they kept screwing up his special coal situation which should have ended in SEASON 1 but they carry it on into "It's good to be Gordon" and "Henry's Happy Coal" and finally, call me a hater, but I don't like is US voice actor I feel it just adds on to his outer child... for Oliver he has definitely shrank

I honestly hate Duck’s entire insertion in the CGI series, because I don’t like that he slides on the rails (IDK who else notices, but I can’t help but see that he slides unrealistically where his wheels spin slower than he’s moving). I noticed other characters do it too, but Duck is the worst of them-
