I loved Thomas’s explanation of “star of the show”. He’s such an amazing photographer and hearing him explain what was going on around that photo was fantastic!
Boys... "Revved up like a deuce." The original lyrics written by Bruce Springstein were "Cut loose like a deuce another runner in the night" but the words were changed when sung by Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Deuce refers to 1932 Ford Coupe. Originally mentioned in Beach Boys Little Deuce Coupe. It was a hot-rod used for drag racing.
I have just discovered your channel through Adam Gibbs. It officially "binge watch" o'clock. I live on Vancouver Island as well and for various reason don't get to travel far to photograph. I have gotten somewhat discouraged watching all these videos on Iceland, The Faroes ,Antelope Canyon, many places in England (Thomas Heaton, Simon Baxter, Nigel Danson etc) There are so many iconic shots from theses areas but I seem to see the same ones over and over again now. It was such a great comment that Thomas made about his favorite spot being his local valley. It has inspired me to look for the secret spots and images in the Comox Valley where I live. My photography should not be about getting the same shots at these other places that 1000 others have taken but being the first to take the unique shots in the areas I frequent. A very interesting and entertaining video. Maybe I will run into you on the trails. I look forward to the next videos.
I really enjoyed that.. In the beginning it reminded me of countless surf sessions - get in the car and decide where to go - then every view of the ocean and someone in the car says "its looking good. Lets go there!". The day you stop to surf the unplanned spot the planned spot was firing. Stick to the plan. Nice banter and insights.
Mike, just watched this and looked you up...wow...just wow....breathtakingly beautiful! I agree...whatever his name was, he didn't take better images than you.
The conversation about Antelope Canyon caught my ear. About 25 years ago a friend and I spent the whole day. The guides took us in with the first tour group of the day and retrieved us with the last. Between occasional tour groups we had the canyon to ourselves. Fortunately in this now overcrowded world nature still has so much more to offer besides the icons.
Terrific video. I think there are now two different categories of landscape photography:. Images processed to look real, and images processed to be creative or artistic. The thing is as you say, to be honest about it. Thanks for the conversation.
Good chat guys, like others, Gavin, came to your channel via Thom's not missed an episode since. Photography should be fun and you all make it fun. That killer image makes all the pain worth it couldn't agree more.
Hi absolutely enjoyed this , more please. Unlike more formal discussions I think that we saw the passion for photography from all three :-) By the way its definitely ALUMINIUM.....
I love this video. I hope to join you and the squad one day at a workshop! Keep the videos coming, love the commentary and the images you capture. Inspirational!
Gavin ... Just got a chance to view this video today... but have followed you for some time now. I want to comment on and compliment you regarding your observations about "composite photos"... I am an "Old School" photographer with my start in the late sixties... and I fully agree with you, that 'composites are OK' but MUST and deserve to come with "Full Disclosure"...
@@fototripper I watched the video Nick Page put out as well as Thomas about the MOAB Conference, and you were such a smart ass in Thomas's video I almost cried laughing, so to watch you guys sit for 27 minutes just shooting the breeze about your experiences and your philosophies about photography was wholly refreshing and such a respite from the gear reviews and fanboy videos that get pumped out 24/7.
Thomas spoke of that tree near his house. I've got a couple of glacial erratic boulders near me that absolutely fascinate me and I KNOW no one else shoots them. I've yet to get the absolute killer image of them but it's just a matter of time.
When i walk round outdoor shops and see those vibrant coloured jackets and wonder to myself, who would be bold enough to buy that colour...orange. well..now we know.
Great chat about composites. I'm not a fan of them, but (1) disclose it and (2) be good at it. Just today some guy posted a composite on a Facebook group. I called fake because the added-in sun rays didn't match the sun. The image was immediately deleted. Shame because I think the non-fake image would have been decent.
revved up like a deuce I the middle of the night = 1932 ford deuce coupe, beach boys also did a song about a having a fast hot rod (my little deuce coop, you don't know what I got). Maybe that's where they got the inspiration. but who knows
Gavin, instead of Antelope lower and upper with the very high amount of people and the restrictions on tripod, try Canyon X just up the road, still amazing and very few people, great guides and plenty of space to get the proper photos. It is still part of the same system
Often this type of rolling conversation goes flat quickly - however this was quite well done. Possibly because the questions were prepared and everyone didn't drone on. They answered the question and moved on.
Mate I'm so glad you said it. What about the Landscape Photographers that basically create a multi-color eyesore out of what would be complete shite?? I've seen it all over YT these days. Create some fiction out of a very ordinary shot. The ones I really respect are the ones that still have an aire of believability about them. I mean at sunset how often would you ever see 4-5 colors in the sky? I see people do huge composites with the sky and clouds and act like that's a normal thing? Crazy thanks for stating what is the obvious gorilla in the room with modern landscape photographers . Cheers mate from Paul in Sydney!
LoL, you all are wrong, the lyrics are, 'Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night, blinded by the light" good video, enjoyed the interview like style of it.
Thats the Manfred Mann version. The original Bruce Springsteen version is "cut loose like a deuce" which refers to a 1932 Ford "deuce" coupe hot rod. Love Bruce but this song is just the hardest to pick up the lyrics. Great video guys.
Concerning the discussion about requiring a permit when shooting for profit on federal lands - that was recently overturned as too broad/unconstitutional. They will probably re-write the law or regulation, but money is on if all you have is a camera and a tripod, you're good. Show up with lights, a director, and models/actors, you'll need a permit. The goal is a balance between impact and the rights of creators, both private and commercial. BTW, the discoverer of the element "aluminum" called it that. Much later, a Britisher thought it didn't sound sufficiently "scientific", so he changed it to "aluminium." Americans pronounce it correctly, and the British have adopted an affected pronunciation. Generally, in science the first name given (if not a name already in use and given mistakenly) is the official name of something.
I just don't get Mesa Arch. I understand it would be cool to see, but I don't think it makes a good photo, the arch completely bisects any image and a third of the photo is just a lump of rock. The orange glow just makes it worse somehow. Seems to be that people put it's celebrity status first.
UGGH. Its "REV'D UP LIKE A 'DUCE". That would be a 1932 Ford Coupe that has been modified to be a hotrod. Seriously, a car full of dudes and no one knows what a '32 lowboy is?
