+Jacqueline Viana actually dueling was illegal in New Jersey when it took place. They only did it in New Jersey because they had an obscure spot in New Jersey that would be good for a duel. Every single person who was present at the duel had to turn their backs to Burr and Hamilton because it was illegal, and neither Burr nor Hamilton wanted any witnesses to the event. This is why nobody knows who shot first, because nobody saw the actual gunfight but Hamilton and Burr.
+thruthe4thdimension I find this thread to be incredibly amusing for some reason... XD I mean, I'm an atheist but I wouldn't act like that towards anyone that has an open mind, no matter what religious views they may have.
What people SHOULD take away from this video is that Judicial Review DOES NOT EXIST. Its a power the court illegally gave itself in Marbury v Madison and its high time people realize the court cannot "Strike down laws"
Jefferson actually included a clause condemning King George for allowing slavery in his first draft of the Declaration of Independence, and classifying them as MEN, thus included under the "all men are created equal" statement. The Southern states later had it taken out. Which raises an interesting point: if that's what he believed, why didn't he free his own slaves?
Maybe -I don't know- because freeing slaves became harder after the rebellions? He was somewhat racist, but not as much as most of the South as I see it.
"...A duel that occurred-WAIT FOR IT-..." Did Lin-Manuel Miranda get the idea for his reoccurring theme for Aaron Burr in his hit musical, Hamilton from John Green?!
If Jefferson and I were shipwrecked on a desert island and our only food source was ten bananas, he'd give me one, make a pitcher of daiquiris out of the other nine, and sip his daiquiris while explaining to me how, in a just society, we'd have split the bananas five and five.
I get so confused when you show Thomas Jefferson's picture. I keep expecting Daveed Diggs but then I'm like, "No no. Historically all the founding fathers were white."
+Danielle unless a few were wearing whiteface, plus the white ppl looked much whiter then they were cuz they wore powder on their faces and wore powdered wigs xP. u know there was white slaves in America? it's true. especially today, all ppl in America are slaves to the government and big business and it's not limited to race, mostly poor ppl
+Miko Bennett Calm down there kiddo. There were white slaves back then yes, but we're not all slaves today. We are not "slaves" to the government or big business. We are not forced to work, and we get paid if we do. You must not know what a slave is.
He was obviously going for the inability to return to the state of nature if one so chooses, which, philosophically, can be described as a type of bondage, if not slavery.
John Green is a writer of amazing books. John Green teaches better than my own APUSH teacher. John Green made a Breaking Bad reference 11:50. In conclusion, John Green is perfect.
This guy is awesome. I am taking a very hard U.S History class online that is required before my Masters program, and this video helped me understand Jefferson so much better. I will continue watching his videos.
As I was working on a project for a 'teaching social studies for 4th-8th grade' course (I'm an ELED major) where I was asked to compile resources for a specific time period (1784-1806) I stumbled across this gem. Just wanted to say thanks for your awesome Crash Course videos and for giving me the opportunity to incorporate my favorite author of all time into my teaching and school work. John Green, you're great.
Yes, i know, i was kidding. After listening Hamilton, and watching a bunch of Hamilton vídeos, I searched on Google about what was the real faces of the characters, expeciality on the Dillars bills. But the it is hard to me to believe that Washington has that guy with the White hair...
1:28 that image is so hilarious. like Alex is just like "ayyyyeeee just stopping by to say that Jefferson has my vote even though I never agreed on him once and we fought on like 75 different fronts. however, Jefferson has beliefs, Burr had none"
anyone else cramming for AP US History final. Mine is this week and its gonna suck a big one. Just because all the tests are so god damn specific and test us on stuff that are so small and specific you never thought in hell you would need to know that
Ok, so this is what your gonna do, stand there like a man until Eaker is infront of you. When the time comes fire your weapon in the air, this will put an end to the whole affair
+rey skywaka And everyday as slaves were being cartered and slaughtered away across the waves he struggled to keep his guard up. inside he was longing to be a part of something the brother was ready to beg steal borrow or barter.
+Patrick Star then a hurricane came and devastation reigned our man saw his future drip dripping down the drain put a pencil to his temple connected it to his brain and he wrote his first refrain a testament to his pain
Well the word got around they said "this kid is insane, man!" Took up a collection just to send him to the mainland. Get your education, don't forget from whence you came. And the world's gonna know your name! What's you name, man??
this is the best. crash course equals a good grade on the ap us exam. not only do i actually really UNDERSTAND history really well now, but im actually enjoying a lot more than i ever thought i would. thank you crash course
did anyone else get that ad before these videos that goes "are you ready to fail your ap us history exam and disappoint your family and everyone you love", damn thanks for reassuring me w that the day before the apush test💀💀
And another thing Mr. "age of enlightenment"; don´t lecture me about the war, you didn´t fight in it! You think I´m frightened of you man, we almost died in the trench, while you were off getting high with the French!
Used to be here for history and John Green back when this came out, pre-Hamilton. I really did watch this around 2014 in 4th grade. Now post-Hamilton I come for Hamilton vs history and Madison, Jefferson vs Hamilton. And Federal vs Democratic-Republican. I really understand more now.
Selene Graham Just wait until you get to your mid-30s and you understand SOOOO much. And then you want to punch everyone for not doing the right thing. It's very frustrating. Also eat healthy now, your older self will thank you.
This video was made BEFORE the popularity of Hamilton. And When he said wait for it I was like AHHHHHHHH. I also only clicked on this vid cuz I was hoping that he would talk about Alexander Hamilton
+Andrew Kim "On May 12, 2009, Miranda was invited to perform music from In the Heights at the White House Evening of Poetry, Music and the Spoken Word. Instead, he performed the first song from The Hamilton Mixtape, a rough version of what would later become "Alexander Hamilton," Hamilton's opening number. " (source: Wikipedia: Hamilton (Musical) ) So SOME bits of it were definitely known at the time this video was published, but the whole musical did not exist yet... the first rough draft called the workshop and featuring a bit more than half of the later complete musical premiered in July 13, after this video was posted.
No I'm not here for APUSH, I'm just a curious American who had not great focus back in high school. As an engineer by trade, I don't get much history experience in my day to day life, so these are great. I really appreciate these reviews.
For anyone wondering who the blue man blending into the curtains is, that is Tobias Funke, from the show Arrested Development. One of the big jokes of the series is that Tobias wanted to join the Blue Man Group, and showed his commitment by painting himself blue. Naturally, he left lots of stains around the house and began to blend into his surroundings quite a bit, surprising even the viewer when he revealed his hiding spot. The show is well known for the enormous subtlety in many jokes.
Jefferson opposed slavery on principle, but in practice he found a quick and easy abolition unfeasible. In his time it was believed that slavery would just die out so there was no reason to end it.
Brian J. Whitelaw-McDonald I actually think that CrashCourse US Hist is based on that book. I mean, John even quotes the author Eric Foner at one point!
+Enna Silkov History is interesting and fun when taught the right way. John is teaching the information the right way lol, just reading the textbook can get pretty boring
I gotta tell you, these are awesome. Totally saved my butt in American History 201. One idea- link to the world history videos that correspond with this video's information, as well as the video before and after this one in this series, in the video description. That would help me a LOT! Thanks again for doing this. You guys are a riot.
Hamilton: "but if you were to ask me who'd I'd promote... Jefferson has my vote! I have never agreed with Jefferson once we have fought on like 75 different fronts, but when all is said and all is done; Jefferson has beliefs, Burr has none.
"Talk Less!!!" BURR!!!! "smILE MORE!" BURR!!!! "DON'T LET THEM KNOW WHAT YOU'RE AGAINST OR WHAT YOU'RE FOR!" BURR!!!! "SHAKE HANDS WITH HIM!!!" BURR!!! "CHARM HER!!!" BURR! "IT'S 1800. LADIES TELL YOUR HUSBANDS, VOTE FOR BURR!!!" i'm so sorry........
Yo! The people are asking to hear my voice. The country is facing a difficult choice. And if you were to ask me who I'd promote! * drumroll * Jeffercrap has my vote!
"A tie between Thomas Jefferson ans Aaron Burr". *Hamilton runs through doors* WE'VE BEEN OVER THIS, I DON'T WANT TO DIE TWICE Edit: 1:19 = Aaron Burr and Hamilton :3
Mac'n CheeseTV even John green is better than getting his info from an infamously polarizing and inaccurate musical that came out years after his video so,, good try I guess
Oh, wow, John. I love ya man, but just, wow. You really dropped the ball on this one. I'll try to keep this brief, but, you're doing a discredit to Jefferson. First of all, Jefferson actively campaigned for the emancipation of slaves- he supported measures to end slavery as early as 1779. He DID free some slaves in his will, the rest, however, were not freed, not because of a lack of will on Jefferson's part, but because his family sold them to pay off his debts after his death. Also, the Barbary Wars were a LOT more important than just "an example of foreign policy interrupting domestic policy," they arguably formed the national character of the new nation in a powerful way. It's just, you're usually so good about this stuff, that I'm kind of surprised this was so sloppy.
Vosian Thank you First draft of the Declaration of Independence was full of anti-slavery remarks. He stated that King George III “has waged cruel war against human nature itself, violating its most sacred rights of life and liberty in the persons of a distant people who never offended him, captivating and carrything them into slavery in another hemisphere as to incur miserable death in the transportation thither…Determined to keep open a market where men should be bought and sold, he has prostituted his negative for suppressing every legislative attempt to prohibit as to restrain this execrable commerce.” “Where the disease [slavery] is most deeply seated, there it will be slowest in eradication. In the northern States, it was merely superficial and easily corrected. In the southern, it is incorporated with the whole system and requires time, patience, and perseverance in the curative process.” Thomas Jefferson By the time of Jefferson’s death in 1826, State laws had so stiffened that it had become virtually impossible for Jefferson to use the same means as George Washington. “President Jefferson was accused of having fathered a child, Tom, by Sally Hemings. Tom was said to have been born in 1790, soon after Jefferson and Sally Hemings returned from France where he had been minister. Present-day members of the African-American Woodson family believe that Thomas Jefferson was the father of Thomas Woodson, whose name comes from his later owner. No known documents support this view.” Herbert Barger, the Jefferson family historian and genealogist who assisted in the original DNA study for Nature (and who strenuously objected to the conclusions published in the original story) explained: “My study indicates to me that Thomas Jefferson was not the father of Eston or any other Hemings child. The study indicates that Randolph [Thomas’ younger brother] is possibly the father of Eston and the others. Randolph, named for his maternal Randolph family, was a widower and between wives when, shortly after his wife’s death, Sally became pregnant with her first child. . . . She continued having children until 1808 when Eston was born. Randolph Jefferson would marry his second wife the next year, 1809. . . . [Significantly, t]hree of Sally Hemings’ children, Harriet, Beverly and Eston (the latter two not common names), were given names of the Randolph family.”
A testament to Crash Courses video production... look back at your favorite creator in 2013, if they were around. They were severely different, to the point where you may question why you even liked them. But Crash Course holds up in 2019, and hopefully will be a recommended source of quick, go-to knowledge for the next generation.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I am currently taking APUSH and I have a DBQ( document based question) tomorrow. My teacher was nice enough to give us the main topic (Thomas Jefferson and his Presidential Policies) because it's our first one of the school year. This video has helped me out soooo much, I honestly had no idea what my teacher talks about most of the time even though I read the textbook (which I also don't understand..sadly). Okay, enough blabbing. My point is THANK YOU FOR HELPING A STRUGGLING APUSH STUDENT THAT HAS A DBQ TOMORROW! Wish me luck tomorrow! (:
John, I think you are wrong about Jefferson and slaves. He wrote an anti-slavery clause in the first Declaration of Independence, but it was edited out. He also advocates for the abolition of slavery in his Notes on the State of Virginia. At the Confederation Congress in 1783, Jefferson added a provision to the discussion in which America would prohibit slavery in any new territory acquired from then on out. The provision was actually defeated 7-6 by the Congress' delegates. This may have prevented the Civil War. He owned slaves, but a racist he was not.
I think people are way to committed to protecting Jefferson's virtues and not seeing him for who he is. Jefferson may have said and written great things but we can't reconcile the things he said with his actions. This is a guy who enslaved over 100 human beings while writing that all men are created equal, he was so conscious of his hypocrisy that he would 'secretly' sell his slaves at the market because he was ashamed of himself to do it publicly. In fact his declaration document was so well taken that many Northern slave holders freed their slaves to live up to his ideals in their lifetimes, Jefferson did not. Jefferson was a complex man we shouldn't hate him but to throw a blanket over his obvious believe dilemmas does no one any good.
he didnt enslave them per say, but he did own slaves. it was customary at the time to own slaves, especially as a plantation owner in the south. we regret to acknowledge that Jefferson freed them all upon his death in 1826
My school ordered the wrong exams so my class has to take the APUSH exam on the 20th - the last day of AP testing! Double edged sword... 2 weeks of more studying, and 2 weeks of it still hanging over my head. Thanks John for making it slightly less painful ;)
As someone who happens to like Jefferson, I think it necessary to evaluate his character as well as his morals instead of just glossing over his ideals, because it offers us a window into his mindset instead of just simply comparing his morals to our own. It is also important to consider time-period mindset with what was and was not morally acceptable. If we just compare everything to our current society just about all of the past looks awful in one aspect or another. This is why taking closer looks into humans and events in history is so important, as they say: Don't judge a book by it's cover.
9:09-9:24 The first thing that caught my eye as I looked away from the screen was the person standing in front of the curtain. Scared me for a slight moment.
Thank you so much for making these. I'm going into 6th grade and it really helps to have these videos because it keeps me from turning into an idiot over the summer.
My APUSH class watched this today (I about freaked out I was so excited), and all the jokes got a fair amount of laughter, like a good portion of the students chuckled a little. But then we got to the crystal meth joke and everyone laughed like crazy
