What a great episode. Any book recommendations on the current thinking on Animism? I was extracting chemical signatures from Bronze Age pottery for my Archaeological Science Masters back in 1994. Though I think that might have been one of the early attempts. We certainly found the signatures, but not the specifics. Very early days back then.

I don't think it's a coincidence that Western Europeans developed early modern capitalism around the same time they rediscovered Greek materialist philosophy. Materialism in the philosophical sense validates the use of man's mind to produce material goods and the enjoyment of life *_in this world,_* and capitalism enables man to do that.
