In this video, we ask Thomas Piketty about the applicability of his inequality thesis, the rate of return on capital greater than the rate of growth to the Global South, particularly where the cost of capital is higher. We then ask him about the reasons for inequality in China and post-communist Russia. From there we move on to his thoughts on the political possibility of a high tax regime under liberal democracy. And finally, we end with how he looks at the history of communism, and whether he thinks leveling up of cultural privilege within a generation is feasible.
Thomas Piketty is a French economist who is a professor of economics at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences, associate chair at the Paris School of Economics, and Centennial Professor of Economics in the International Inequalities Institute at the London School of Economics. Piketty's work focuses on public economics, in particular income and wealth inequality. He is the author of the best-selling book Capital in the Twenty-First Century (2013),[2] which emphasises the themes of his work on wealth concentrations and distribution over the past 250 years. Hailed as a modern successor to Karl Marx’s monumental Capital, it rejuvenated radical leftwing critiques of capitalism and earned Piketty (it rhymes with spaghetti) the epithet of “rock star” economist.

Thank you for another excellent interview. It would be educative to have a more detailed analysis of the Chinese economy and it’s income inequality issues.

To my shame I have not read Thomas Piketty’s book on inequality yet. It’s great to hear this expert speak.

I love your shows! I learn enormously from each guest. Would you be interested in guests that would be able to go deep on the PRC's political and legal structures, and daily practice domestically? I think it would be useful to discuss the issues of democracy and governance with people who are incredibly familiar. Maybe Roland Boer and/or Zhang Weiwei? Or anyone else who can speak deeply and familiarly on these issues.

Unequal world, why do we live? it depends upon the location of a certain country..yes of course unequal remains the same. Are u satisfied for dat kind of world? Change for better and tries something new..Ds. interview grows progressive especially to the educated person until now they speak and throw bad words to their company..For me they are not educated.Dead body still there, shouting from time to time...When it comes to other countries look forward and innovates something new,not for their ownself but for the expansion of related countries..I notify great person resides in library..Congratulation Prof Piketty for the job well done ❤

I don’t think he knows enough about China and I don’t think he admires China’s success. His glanced over his 2013 book 21st Century Capitalism. The information was quite right though a decade too old. He has no idea how China changed from 2003-2013, let alone from 2013-2023. 1989-1990 were years of US CIA operated regime change in China, Central Europe and Russia, a 20th Century Arab Spring. They failed in the Tianmen Squad coup but successfully with Gorbachev dismantling Warsaw Pact and enacting Yeltsin as president to aid Wall Street to devour Russian assets by privatisation. China endured 30 years of continuous CIA harassment with Tibet, Xinjiang, Taiwan, Hong Kong, trade war, sanctions, fake news and abduction of daughter, and come winning 🏆 The US empire is at its last breaths and China will lead us to saving the planet 🌏

Oh lord! He's such a mess. The questions had meaning his answers were none. No a thinker.
