The closest anyone has come to throwing a javelin 100m in modern times is Jan Železný. He set his lifetime best of 98.48m. Can Thomas Röhler break his barrier and break the record?

Actually there was a German (Uwe Hohn) who cleared a distance of 104.80 m. He was only human to do so. But that was before the new Javelin design after which this record of Uwe was kind of made invalid.

Someone already did and then they made the first javelin modification in 1986. Then they were approaching 100 m again, so they made the second modification. Sure, someone will finally go over 100 m again which will precipitate a further modification. The 100 m throw shouldn't be looked at as a great victory, but a curse.

0:51 pause here.. he is at least 2 meters off the white line when he actually throws the javelin. The distance is measured from that white line, which they are not allowed to pass even after the throw, which is obviously why they throw it so early before the line as they are in motion. In modern times with the technology we have, that we still use this silly line on the ground as a starting point, rather than where people actually throw from, is stupid. From the moment the javelin left his hand, it clearly flew 100 meters and a bit more. Thats literally the definition of a distance thrown is it not? If he ran 20 meters forward while the Javelin was in the air, would the throw be 78 meters? Makes no sense. Sure it's possible for a human to throw 100 meters, he already did.
@TheRausing1
@TheRausing1 5 лет назад
Martin Dolmer Andersen you’re not wrong. But the distance itself is kind of arbitrary, in that it’s just a coincidence that 100m is the target. so his goal is not specifically throwing 100m, more throwing 100m within competition rules. In the same way usain bolt can ‘technically’ run 100m faster than 9 seconds, but only if there are no competition rules and he can start whilst already at full speed. He’d literally be running 100m, but it means nothing because there’s no reference. You get me?
@Dave-lr2wo

This is stupid beyond belief. You are completely wrong and your notion of what sport is about is naive and kind of juvenile. We have a boundaries in jumping, throwing, and running events because they are a fundamental part of the skill component of the event, they make it possible to compare performances across eras, and they make it trivial to set up competitions at every skill level. Please take your idea and toss it out the window. The main problem with your idea is that degrades the test importance of the sport, of history, and of how to democratize competition.

It is possible, but you need a perfect throw and also perfect conditions. In my opinion the WR with the current javelin can be set somewhere between 100 and 103 meters. Not sure though if any current thrower can do it. The Germans are better than any thrower after Zelezny's days, but I still think their limits are around 96-98 meters.

Before the modern javelin was made official in 1986 , Uwe Hohn of former east Germany threw 105 meters . The American Tom Petranoff threw 100 meters . These two throws occurred in the early 1980s. There were quite a few in the 90 to 100 meter range also. There was no change in weight of Javelin . They changed the weight distribution of the javelin to make for shorter throws . The concern was that stadiums weren't long enough then and fears of Javelins going into the crowd or athletes running around the curve , at the other end . Well it is sort of silly to have running events going on at the same time as the javelin throw . And Stadiums are much longer now .
@Jen-Yueh_Hu
@Jen-Yueh_Hu 5 лет назад
If stadiums are longer now, does it mean the curves/bends of the track have smaller radii of curvature and the straight having longer distance?
@RalooRocker
@RalooRocker 5 лет назад
Also the javelin used to often land flat and skid further before stopping , making it harder to determine the exact landing point. I recall once Petranoff threw around 100m and the javelin skidded through the high jump warm up area!

Rohler really sounds like a squared away individual, a champion you can admire outside of his skill throwing the javelin. Like others have said, he speaks excellent English, better than most inbreds over here in the States. I wouldn't doubt he speaks more than two languages fluently. I've been to Europe quite a few times on business and it always amazed me how many people spoke multiple languages. English being a mandatory requirement in many schools and countries is a smart strategy, I guess you could say out of the hundreds of languages around the world, English could be considered the most universal of them all. Learning a second language here is optional with Spanish and German seem to be the most popular. I took Latin for one year in HS, I didn't enjoy it.

Correct me if I am wrong but does wind have any affect? I know that the javelin is super aerodynamic because it's super thin but wouldn't even the slightest difference from the wind create inertia?
@shellbell4765
@shellbell4765 6 лет назад
My sister went to college for throwing and she said that if you throw it the right way it can actually ride the wind
@ltzp2
@ltzp2 6 лет назад
the wind still has a significant effect on the javelin, much like it does with the very aerodynamic golf ball. Air resistance is always present, so don't think of the wind as being some external factor that has to be strong to affect the flight, think of it as something that is constantly affecting the flight, and can help or hurt it depending on the circumstance. Even the humidity in the air plays a part in how far the javelin carries, as well as the temperature of the air and javelin. A tail wind (coming from behind) can make it fly better than in "windless" conditions because it is moving forward, and applying a forward force on the javelin, though it pushes the javelin down more when it is on its up flight because of the way the javelin is angled (like a ramp going up, so the air is directed up over the head of the javelin, pushing it down.)
@Dave-lr2wo
@Dave-lr2wo 5 лет назад
Of course wind has an effect. That's why favorable winds beyond the allowable negate world records.
@RalooRocker

A moderate headwind will aid the flight of the javelin by creating extra lift. It was claimed that the Russians tried to aid their competitors at Moscow Olympics by opening the large stadium doors to increase headwind when they were throwing!

It is possible but the trouble is when the javelin starts going that far, the IAAF modify the javelin so it doesn't land on the track area at the other end of the field, or else they'd have to move the event outside.

Anyone who comments saying that the world record is by Hohn clearly didn't pay attention in this video and might be a bit confused about it beyond the actual history. The world record is 98m because of the modifications of the javelin that's why the video says MODERN time. Although Hohns record is an eternal one it still doesn't count in terms of world records to break or beat so the 100m barrier in modern athletics has still yet to be broken. Aside from that I def think it will be reached and I am positive it will be by a German athlete. Rohler has the best form and precision to do it BUT Johannes Vetter and Andreas Hofmann have the strength to guide the jav farther so this race to 100m throw in the modern era honestly comes down to technique/form over strength/power. My pick is that Rohler and Vetter will both do it and I wont be surprised if it isn't at this upcoming Olympics, It's just a matter of who will do it first.

In my school there was a young sports teacher going with spears. Then let the students do it, him standing behind the end zone, meeting a colleague, have a chat and then one student was a bit better than anticipated. Nailed the foot of the teacher to the ground. They shoved him with the spear in the foot into the ambulance...

My high school had it as an athletics event. I tried one throw, hit the back of my neck with the back-end and the javelin falling 2 meters before me. Never tried a second throw again. I hope this is motivating to you.

Uh....I believe 100m has already been done for a couple of decades at least. Never understood the point of adjusting the spear if the record is just going to return to where it was in 85.

I think it difficult for Thomas to do it, it is necessary to improve his technique and constantly throw over 94 - 95 m.

If someone can throw 98m 100m has to be possible
@Dave-lr2wo

Oh, ok. So if 100m is attained, 102 is possible. Then 102 to 104, of course. Basically there is no end to how far someone can throw, thanks to your comment. As I type, a small Dutch girl is throwing a javelin three and a half miles.
