How to make the most awesome Thomas & Friends Troublesome Truck that combines the wheels from a Thomas Adventures rolling stock and a classic ERTL Troublesome Truck. In doing this toy mod I have created a Troublesome Truck that has a wheel action just like The Journey Beyond Sodor where the trains swing and sway when singing and talking. I am having a lot of trouble finding the new Thomas Adventures stock that does include a Troublesome Truck, this new design looks similar to the Take N Play rolling stock. I'm hoping my little toy mod has you thinking about how to make the toys more awesome. The ERTL Thomas toys are beautiful, and always well designed, but their weakness was the coupling system and wheel sets. In a strange way I remove these weak links and bring a fresh feel to a really old classic Thomas & Friends toy. I think the change is wheel suspension is a really nice simple idea. It adds so much more character to the toys and it's much more fun to play with. It was quite amazing how the screw holes from the ERTL toy married up exactly with the Thomas Adventures design. That really made this Thomas toy mod a very simple adventure in combining a classic toy with the new one of today.
The Troublesome Trucks (called Cars, originally known as Foolish Freight Cars, in the US narration) are always nicknamed so because they can be very troublesome, and love to play tricks on the engines. The trucks have been the cause of most of the railway's accidents. Thomas & Friends toys have had many variations of Troublesome Trucks, the Bachmann, ERTL, Lionel and later Hornby models are some of the more realistic toys. In recent films and TV episodes the Troublesome Trucks have been featured more. In fact there is a real effort to add faces to nearly every wagon. This can be seen in The Journey Beyond Sodor. I just hope this change is also translated to the Thomas toys.

Thomas ERTL toys are some of the most loved Thomas toys, but their weakness was the couplings and wheels. In a very strange way I have that nasty problem solved by using the latest in Thomas toy technology. It's the most awesome Troublesome Truck ever!

I really wish Mattel would keep the stories based on Sodor Island. There have been some very curious changes of late, all of a sudden every bit of rolling stock is a character with face again. Every chance to split up the steam team and hide Henry is obvious. The addition of flash in the pan new characters is at an all time high. And all we want is toys that look as awesome as the classic Thomas toys. Sooner or later something's gonna give.

Adventures have made a troublesome truck, it’s blue with a barrel load. Essentially like the take n play one. And Bachmann has had 5 troublesome truck variations 6 if you count S.C. Ruffey

What triggered this video was looking over my collection of Troublesome trucks in a previous Thomas merch video. It had me thinking how sometimes these very popular characters seem to be so difficult to find. Mad Bomber flashbacks aplenty in this mod.

Indeed, brings me back to the days where Leo's content inspired me and made me appreciate the art of cinematography, special effects and quality without CGI. Now that I think of it that content kept the little version of me sane during one of the most difficult times of my life, I remember trying to cast Ertl Thomases and troublesome trucks with Play-Doh molds and plaster of Paris to get some escape from the life that was crumbling around me.

This is a fantastic video Leo! I've always loved it when you take apart toys and create interesting mashups like this one. Your ERTL Adventures truck hybrid looks so good that I'm seriously thinking about ordering some ERTL trucks and doing it myself! Thank you for taking the time to show this conversion - a lot of fans, myself included, are mystified as to why the troublesome trucks are playing a big role in Thomas and Friends again yet the merchandise doesn't reflect that at all.

I think Mattel are including other rolling stock more and adding faces because they become the chorus in so many of the songs in the Thomas films that are becoming musicals. It took me a few views to work out why all the trucks now have faces. It's a real throwback to see this going on. Mind you we will really never understand why because who knows in a few more films the faces may vanish again. Nothing seems cemented down to 'whats Thomas' and in that I feel lays a huge problem. The drift away from Sodor is weird. It was ok to go to the magical Misty Island but it seems stories derived on Sodor are too much effort for the script writers of Todays thomas. The sad fact is all the best stories have already been written.

This is why I think you're a real diamond-in-the-rough channel these days. You have Thomas and Cars and Planes and other toy-themed videos like those generic copy-and-paste channels we get these days, but you keep it varied. We get spider videos, rant videos, and even modification videos. They're always a joy to watch, even the longer ones, because you keep it interesting and fun. I nearly ALWAYS watch the longer, upwards of 20-30 minute videos all the way through because I actually enjoy it. But one of the most important points that sets you far above these generic toy channels nowadays is that you DON'T TREAT KIDS LIKE THEY'RE STUPID. You're not afraid of using bigger words, don't put annoying and repetetive music in the background, (although copyright may have helped that one :/ ), and you be sure not to be overly kiddish at any point in the video. It really makes your videos fantastic and watchable by all ages. It just saddens me how RU-vid is treating you. You've been a fighter on the site for an entire DECADE, and they screw your channel over because it's different. I feel really sorry for you, and I hope you keep fighting. Yes, look at the detail on the Bachmann, you can count rivets all over it. The Bachmann overall looks awesome, but I feel Hornby have a better face.

Wow what a fantastic custom!! That is probably one of the best troublesome trucks Ive ever seen. I like how you did a comparison to your Mad Bomber rolling stock because I remember watching that years ago before I even had a youtube account to subscribe to you. And I used to love watching your Mad Bomber videos, its really unfortunate you got the response that you did from some people regarding those videos. But this was a great video nonetheless, well done!

ERTL made troublesome trucks with different faces, like the ones you showed in this video, and they made S. C. Ruffey. They also made a very rare variant of the two standard Troublesome Trucks, but they are brown instead of grey. And they made other variations of S. C. Ruffey. They made two versions where he is marked as a “toy box” truck sold in a very rare Christmas two pack with a Thomas that has a Santa Hat molded onto the smokestack. And other Troublesome Trucks include a two pack called “Silly Vans”. Another very rare pack. And a brake van with a grumpy face, which is also quite rare.

The ERTLS packed the detail and correct shape as seen on TV but the couplings were the weak links. It's they'd have been made with the Adventures couplings in the first place, there wouldn't have been any need for the magnets or any further changes

Now this is my favorite type of Leokim videos. Ertle was the best Thomas and friends toys ever, it's a real shame that they went out of business. At least Bachmann makes them good. If only they didn't discontinue the Gordon Express coaches, cause seriously, what is Gordon going to pull now?!

Been a long time since I've seen an intro to a Thomas video like that. I love the troublesome trucks and I was happy to see someone else had paid as much attention to the faces as I had. This mod looks fun and easy. Thanks for making this video! I would love to see a video on casting those truck faces for other rolling stock (as I imagine it is done?).

Bachmann actually has 5 troublesome truck in all variations. They have regular troublesome trucks like the ones you ave, they have smaller ones like the original hornby ones, cattle car ones and next year they'll have tanker ones.

I'm actually very surprised that the ERTL-to-Adventures conversion went so smoothly! I wonder if there's someone at the Mattel design team looking out for us... or maybe a fan of these types of videos from you? I know I am definitely the latter. I have rather missed seeing the process of making old and new marry up. Do you think you will try this process with other ERTL rolling stock, like the fuel tankers, the foolish vans, or any other? I also look forward to seeing that new face casting method. It could be very helpful for increasing the Troublesome Truck militia-I mean fleet. Until next time, it's always a pleasure.

Just on faces on rolling stock. The Journey Beyond Sodor was an eye opener for the idea again to have a face on everything that moved. I just hope the toys reflect this same ideal. Sadly the vibe for a long time now is a Thomas toy with a face is either a character or the odd are rare Troublesome Truck. The amount of faceless trucks is quite amazing. Who knows we may see oil, milk wagons again. But the underlying feel is a move away from Sodor Island where it's far easier to add flash in the pan characters for stories that often become de-railed by distance from the island.

The one thing this video makes me wonder is what do the Adventures Annie and Clairebel look like because the Take a long versions are some of my favorite Thomas toys ever just because of big and bulky they were compared to the trains. Was show accurate, but fun having a hevey train.

I just have to say Leo.... I'm a toy collector but have NEVER gotten into or bought a Thomas toy... Your videos though, has made me do a "doubletake" and made me reconsider my feelings about buying Thomas toys and now I'm thinking about buying some Thomas items! Thanks for your videos or I wouldn't know where to start or what to buy! You have shown me the good quality Thomas toys next to the bad quality Thomas Toys. Now I am going out this weekend to purchase the first of my Thomas toy collection!! I have some ideas on what to buy, but would love to hear any suggestions you may have about what Thomas Toys to buy to start my collection! I remember doing one of these myself back in the year of 2012. However it was a modification of the ERTL D. Fusit gunpowder wagon with a Take-n-play base.

Bachmann actually have 5 variations of Troublesome Truck (I think the latest is a sal wagon, 4th one is a truck like 1 and 2).

Thanks, I was not quite sure. I remember seeing TT 1, 2 and 3. Sadly the Bachman stock is really tricky to find in Australia now. A few years ago it was available in a few stores.

A trip back in time in more ways than one. But almost totally pointless as well. Maybe I have given Mattle some nice ideas in a slight change to axle designs, looks like they picked up on my glow in the dark Trackmaster 2 Devious Diesel. I'm a awesome ideas man who's could change Mattel's fate.

There are only 2 faces for the troublesome trucks, but the earliest version of them were brown, and so the brown ones are rarer

Great video Leo and what a fantastic mod! Sadly your mod is far superior than anything I expect to come out of the Adventures range. It is really surprising that a design from 1990 works so closely with a design from now. Personally I don't have any problem with people modifying old ERTL toys, most of them are reasonably common, but I definitely see less of them on my rounds now. Do you like the rocking/bouncing in the Journey Beyond Realism? I find it quite annoying!
