Thomas Trackmaster 75 Golden Thomas Chuggington Revisited Google Trends Reveals A Train Wreck 

I ask some REALLY important questions in this video. Thomas is in LOTS OF TROUBLE. It would be nice if you do comment try to let me know your thoughts on the data I show. I revisit Chuggington toys as it's not far from returning if you believe everything you read online.

2010 for Thomas was also the year when the Mattel takeover really began. 2009 marked the end of the Hit Trackmaster era and the end of Take Along. It’s hard to believe that in less than 5 years, Mattel would control practically the entire brand.

When your a Teen and nostalgia hits

Thomas is in trouble. When you said Thomas the tank engine before 2010, people knew who he was. And before then, early 2000s and before he was way bigger. Wooden Railway is very popular for a reason. And in recent years it hasn’t been the same. The best way I can describe Thomas now is a kids show. It had it’s time as a General Audience show, now Thomas only centers towards babies. This was not the show I cherished and grew up with. I remember playing with my wooden trains while watching the amazing stories to Alec Baldwin and George Carlin’s narration. It’s clear that Mattel doesn’t care, they have a talented writing team who are Thomas fans themselves, and all they want to do is have them pander to babies. The bad toy sales, no one can stand to watch the show anymore, I think it’s clear Thomas is coming to the end of the line. 75 years is a long time for a character to be around, and 35 years is long time for a tv show to be around, but the show has really only been good for 20 of those years. I just have this feeling that Thomas won’t make it past 80. If things turn around in the next five years, maybe we can make it. But it’s Mattel, and they won’t do anything for us

The first 4 seasons of Thomas & Friends (until 1995) were almost entirely based on the Railway Series. This was the time when the stories were a little bit more realistic and captured train enthusiasts as well as children. Then in Season 5 they drifted away from the books, but that season is the proof that even without being based on the books it could be good. A few years later HiT decided to dumb down the characters and make them basically without personality (A character would act pompous, then something happens and they learn not to be that way.) And if you want to give children an example to follow then fine, but this way the stories were all the samish. Nowadays, with Mattel, there is the push for the character Thomas. He is shoehorned in every episode in one way or another, they changed the engines making them act somewhat like in the Cars world. Out of 6 new engines maybe, the one released in toys are always 2 AND a special edition Thomas. Always. They push and shoehorn Thomas in places and contexts that back in the day he probably would never have been in. A lot of fans have drifted away for this, and for the fact that now a little Railway island is not enough for storytelling apparently, and we have to go around the world. And so with Thomas going everywhere and not on his branch line, Edward and Henry, two core characters being less served in stories and toys, and the realism dropping drastically, I'd say that we're nearing the end... The problem is that if the show reversed back to the classic type of stories everyone would be grumpy because it's not a rollercoastery-type of thing...

This was a really insightful and interesting video Leo. I've been a big fan of your videos (Mad Bomber, Toy Reviews, etc.) for around 10 years now but I don't think I've ever left a single comment on one of your videos. Anyways, to answer the question that you propose in the video about what caused Thomas' downward spiral around 2010. If you ask me, I think I agree with you about the iPad generation causing a rift in the interest in Thomas Toys and the brand as a whole. I even had that happen to myself, I was 10 when I got an iPod touch and later an iPad and my interest was directed towards that much more than to my Thomas toys. Despite this, I feel like there is a bigger reason for Thomas' decline. In the early 2010s, I would say Mattel was doing some of the best work they could on the Thomas & Friends toys. A lot of the models of characters back during that era were really well done and had good quality in them. The Take N Play models of Belle, Flynn, Den, and Dart were beautiful renditions of the characters. If you then were to look at the The Great Race characters for example, they all have the huge ugly magnets and have very squashed proportions and they lacked variation. Every engine had the same wheel base and any additional wheels were molded on. Even if you look at Thomas Adventures or Trackmaster Push Along, they still lack accurate proportions for the characters and contain the same wheel bases and just don't stand out. Another thing about the early 2010s is that a lot of the Thomas & Friends playsets whether it be Trackmaster, Take N Play, or Thomas Wooden Railway were all train sets rather than stunt sets. Take the big playsets for the new Thomas specials of the time. The big Trackmaster Day of the Diesels set was the Remote Control Cranky set. That felt like a true train set with pieces that could easily be expanded upon to make your own Sodor Railway. If you then look at the Sky High Bridge Jump set from The Great Race, it contains so many weird pieces which you can't use to build a railway with (like you have pointed out several times). Another thing which you have also pointed out is that the playset because of it's nature has gotten tiring very fast and has ended up on the sides of the road for trash or severely discounted at retailers. The problem is that the Sky High Bridge jump can only be set up one way and that's it. There's no other way you make a layout with it, you have you set it up exactly like the instructions. There are some instances recently where Mattel has made some more train set like playsets, like the Trackmaster Push Along sets, but the problem with those sets is that the buildings included are 2D façades made in one color with no detail. That stuff is really low quality and I know as a kid I hated those types of toys that didn't have any detail or varying colors. It just makes it look like a toddler toy. Finally, one last thing is that the current toys are severely lacking rolling stock. I remember the days of the Hit Toy Company and even Fisher Price Trackmaster 1 when they made rolling stock packs. Now all we get are one trick pony cars like the ones that come with that Golden Thomas (which I very much agree they should've made all shiny, I would've totally picked it up then). All in all, I think Thomas' biggest problem is the lack of Train set features in the current days. The Big World Big Adventures rebrand would be a success in my opinion if they were to just made good TRAIN sets rather than stunt sets. If they made a Chinese Railway Playset I would have totally bought that, but instead they made that weird dragon playset. Those types of sets are not what kids interested in trains want.

I really think that 2010 was the triple threat for Thomas & Friends. With the beginning of the Sodor Island Drift with the Misty Island Rescue Special, the IPad Generation being the hottest item for Christmas 2010, and the fight against rival Chuggington was just too much for a little blue tank engine and his friends to handle.

I remember being 6 or 7 years old when I first watched your videos. Now I’m 14 years old still watching your videos. This video was a nice trip down memory lane and I liked how you brought up that Thomas vs Brewster video you did years ago. I made a video on my channel that was an attempt at recreating Thomas vs Brewster. It’s too bad that Mad Bomber Episode 2 never came to RU-vid. I would love the Mad Bomber to be made into a movie with more realistic versions of the engines.

Im a huge Thomas fan and I hate to see it's decline in popularity, Ive collected the "diecast push along style" (take along, ertle, adventures ect) for over 90% of my life and recently got lucky to get a seawead salty and paint track master PA really cheap in Aldi, a diamond anniversary Thomas online and even a hot wheels Thomas from a shop. We don't tend to see such empty pegery over here in the UK so idk if that's something you want to look in to. ^-^

Wild that you found some new Thomas Merch in the flesh-can't relate. However I was naughty and opened all my Thomas goodies, ooop :P Look I originally thought that the downward tick was after the transition to GCI, but that was 2009, so I think it's more to do with iPads etc. The thing about the changing toylines is that the actual single child shelf life of Thomas is pretty small (i.e. a child only is in their 'Thomas' phase for 2-4 years) so kids seeing Thomas toys today don't know or remember the good old days like us collectors. As such, I don't think the decline in quality of the toys has been that much of an impact either (though the rubbish distribution can't be helping with sales!). So... whatever the reason is, I think Mattel is just as confused as we are, which might explain the weird stuff they've been trying and changing over the last 10 years to make Thomas gold again.

Boy. This video gave me nostalgia. But on another note. 2010 was in my eyes a very big low point for Thomas. That's if we go by the series. I can certainly say that Wooden Railway was quite strong up to that point. As I collected most of Wooden Railway until Wood to over I followed the changes that were done to the brand in its life time. Now this will be a bit of a longer read: In 2011 TOMY took Wooden Railway over and the engines faces were updated to look like the CGI ones (didn't look to good). Then 2013 Fisher Price took over the brand. ( And Fisher Price is a subsidiary of Mattel). Faces were done right, there brought models back that were first released back in the day (Flying Scotsman is a good example). As the years went on I think the care that was taken at first was getting a little less. Small hint was that more and more plastic was getting used in sets and buildings. Sure saving money is fine but not using what gives the brand its name to its full potential gives a hint something was already a miss then. In 2017 they changed the faces on some models to smaller and thinner ones. (I recall you said something about that in that big Henry video). Then Mattel took completely over and replaced WR with Wood. I can't believe it's roughly 3 years now that Wooden Railway is gone. I still think that is one of the biggest mistakes Mattel has ever made.

Until mattel realises that children derserve quality toys, their sales will continue taking a turn for the worst

Leo, I think Mattel has set up the Thomas and Friends brand for failure for themselves because they only think of Thomas the Tank Engine as a brand. Thomas was never supposed to be a brand. They were stories told by a father to entertain a sick child, and Mattel has never seen TTTE as that. They need to step back and think about what made Thomas and his friends so great and how AND WHY it has been loved by so many people.

Did you know that there is a Hot Wheels Thomas the Tank Engine? I earned one myself!

I think when Hornby discontinued the Thomas the tank range a few years back it really showed how desperate Mattel were, and how much they were charging to let other brands use the franchise. I think it was not just to do with how expensive it was becoming, but also because of the new child safety measures put in (and all the small parts that the models had) which was possibly also what caused the demise of the Hornby Thomas range. If it were to come back (which most likely wont ever happen) it would probably get intergrated into Hornby's new "Junior" range which have these really cheaply made high speed trains which you could find at dollar stores. They aren't worth the money if I am brutally honest but at least it attempts to get the newer "Smart Phone & Tablet" generation into the world of model railways which would be devastating if it was to become a dying hobby

I think the decline of Thomas has been a chain reaction. In 2008 there was the financial crisis which destroyed the middle class in America, this is Thomas’s largest demographic. The second is the iPad and iPod which exposed families to the option to make a single 300-400 dollar purchase and have a bunch of free apps and the internet. When Mattel got the brand there was a decline in interest to physical toys because of iPads and 2008. Mattel lowered the quality of the toys to make them more price competitive (new take and play Thomas and new track master Thomas). This still wasn’t enough because unlike Mattel’s cheap crap you can get a good quality app for free. Heck, you can get some of the best video games in the world for the same price of their stupid roller coaster train sets. This made Mattel lower the quality again, leading to track master 2 and the one way coupler take and play, not to mention the increasing amount of plastic in wooden railway. At this point the quality is so bad that even if you had the money to buy the overpriced crap (Mattel has a markup of over 400%) you wouldn’t anyway. This has continued throughout the decade leading to Thomas adventures (which was better but still cheaper) and Thomas wood. It also doesn’t help that Thomas is going around the globe to appeal to a larger amount of people (mainly China) so there you go, you can blame China for coronavirus and the decline of the Thomas tv show

While things MAY look pretty grim for Thomas in Australia, It's surprisingly fairly popular in America according to this chart. trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=%2Fm%2F01hn_t&geo=US Not to mention, Mattel rebranded the Trackmaster Range and are finally coming out with normal looking train sets for that range. Along with a normal Annie and Clarabel.

Chugginton came back with a show called Chuggington: Tales From The Rails and they completly have new designs. Koko has the biggest change which is her rockets.

2010 was shortly the decline for Thomas. Back then, the toys were great! Different merchandise and they look so much different. But that end the Fisher Price era. Tomy kept the brand going and the toys even looked better aswell. But when Mattel bought it. The greatness of the toys declined and the sales stopped. If Mattel would revert back to original styles, Thomas would be going up so much more. It would be such as Tomy James with a CGI face. And now Thomas has to duke it out with other brands to stay.

I’m not seriously a huge fan of what Mattel is doing to the Thomas Brand, they put less and less detail into the toys because, what it seems to me, they want to save as much money as possible, instead of spending it on resources, but if they did add more detail into the toys it would catch the eyes of children and they would earn more money, but that’s just my input on the situation

If you ask me what caused the downfall, of the Thomas franchise, I personally think that it was a combination of all the things you mentioned in this video. The iPad generation, the Sodor Island drift, and also the fact that Thomas is slowly approaching the scrapyard, can all be contributed to the downfall of this once grand franchise. The reason why the large majority of the Thomas fans on the internet are adults, is because they grew up with the classic series (Season 1-7), which is considered the best era of the franchise. This means the Thomas fandom is the kind of fandom that will stick with the franchise all the way to the end, and can't really walk away from the franchise because it means so much to them. When you ask Thomas fans if they ever lost interest in the show at one point in their life, they all seam to tell a similar story. (It was with me from birth, I lost interest at this age, then at this age I came back due to *reason*). So theres my thoughts on why the Thomas franchise has downfallen so badly, they can't really get new fans. Thomas products used to be good. 🤦‍♂️ In the Target near my area, the Thomas stock is really low. Take and Play and Thomas Wooden Railway were great!

Not too long ago the store I go to that stocks thomas stuff, had a crazy sale where trackmaster stuff was about 75 cents a piece, and I bought all the replacement engines I needed, minus Edward and Henry unfortunately but they are super hard to come across in the state of indiana where I live and always have been Edit: I bought James, Percy, Thomas, and Gordon if you're wondering

This might be a totally weird way of putting this, but I think Thomas has a lot less 'charm' than it did in 2010. There's the things that you and other people have brought up, like staying on Sodor island and playsets that actually feel like railways which make it all feel way better than what it is now. Also, if we want to go there, 2009 was the Switch to cgi so we can also make of that what we can.

2010 was when the lead scare was a big deal. Coupled with the poor reception from misty island rescue the brand just got worse and worse. Mattel came into the picture around 2013 and they did a pretty good job until bout 2017 with the transition over Thomas wood which for a lot of people was when Thomas took a nose dive

I think that Mattel should stop cheaping the production of these toys,the take'n'play range has at least 4 different changes,the wooden railway line is mostly plastic and the trackmaster line uses the same chasis for all the engines For me the down fall of the toys came after 2013 after that year the characters that Mattel decided they need toys of were the first 8 engines and other characters nobody asked for Ex: The logging locals (Bash,Dash and Ferdinand) They still have toys even In 2020 and classic characters like Boco just disappeard Mattel needs not just to improve the quality of the toys but also the quantaty of the characters they're making cuz' there are a lot of characters that people already have

I’ll say this, one thing Mattel is currently doing is producing models of Thomas, over and over and over again, not many different characters, especially like duck, Donald, Douglas or Oliver as if they have no more ideas so the only way to make more engines for money is to make more Thomas, really we should be seeing other characters on the market, it gives it more variety, having Thomas in different liveries all the time is getting to be a problem, yes Thomas is the main of the show but we should see a lot more other characters too, this may be the reason of Mattel’s downfall.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that what has been killing Thomas & Friends is the reckless choices made by Mattel. Say what you want about the Sharon Miller era, Hit Entertainment, Magic Railroad, Season 17, etc, but ever since Season 22, Mattel has just completely screwed things up. Go back 10 years and things were good at the time with the toys, probably because Chuggington had Mattel running scared, fearing that Thomas couldn't compete with the brand. The series itself wasn't that great at the time, but that was more on Hit Entertainments part. After Chuggington called it quits in 2015, look how the Thomas toys have changed in the last 5 years with Wooden Railway, Minis, Take-n-Play, and Trackmaster. Now without competition, Mattel simply doesn't care, but if rumors about Chugginton making a comeback are true, maybe then you'll see an improvement not only with the toys, but also the series itself. On the topic of the gold Trackmaster Thomas, all I'll say is that I'm personally more impressed with the beating drum wagon.

Um, Leo, there are Bachmann Chuggington trains. It's just that they didn't catch on that good and they're going to be hard to find now. They only had Wilson, Brewster, and Koko and some rolling stock. I myself own some Bachmann Chuggington trains. If you're interested I can send you pictures of them

One of the biggest issues I have with trackmaster 2 is the reduction of rolling stock to the same 2 inch type chassis. It really detracts from just about every rolling stock type

Thank you for the video. Really great, and informative. I have to say, Mattel was very promising in the beginning. The show was greatly improved and very enjoyable, even though the toys were lacking. Since then, the show has gone downhill to the point where I cannot stand to watch it. It is unbearable to me. And the toys are far, far worse than they were before. I do not see this brand surviving for much longer. I guess you never know what you truly have until it’s gone.

Well one thing that happened to Thomas in 2009 was the transition from models to CGI.

This is my opinion, but I think Mattel actually started to kill the brand back in 2010 when we really saw all of the Thomas toys go up on shelves. It was decent for a while, but then in 2013... came Trackmaster 2, and I think that’s where the real decline was. They started to make all of these rollercoaster type sets, trying way to hard to appeal to the younger audience. Tablets and iPads probably also had something to do with it, as they were trying to make the brand look interesting, and it failed... kinda, because people like me just buy the stuff anyway. But, in all honesty, I don’t think Mattel is trying all they can to bring back the brand, and they’re killing it with their dumb decisions like Thomas Wood, and to me it looks like they’re being really greedy with the production and marketing of these items, as I don’t even see commercials about Thomas stuff here in the US. I think that by 2030, Thomas & Friends will almost be dead.

Like most people I think the cheapening of it hurts. My thought is that they pumped to much to fast. The sets for track master 2 also are one amazing thing then reset and do it again. Then we have Thomas wood...not much to say about that other than fail UNTIL they got pulled painted

I think you find Thomas is slowly dying out it’s a shame but that happens it’s been around for years. I remember robot wars having so many toys and then when the show ended it slowly die out it’s always a shame something really good and then it goes of the shelves. I lost interest with Thomas when it went to cgi I like the old models on sets more but I haven’t watched it in years.

I have found that little kids have now been new interested in Ipads, Iphones, Xbox, Videogames, etc. I also think that it is the quality of the toy because of how Mattel has changed things which makes it feel more cheaper. I Rember though playing with the thomas wood toys years ago but now I feel like that quality of the toys are gone which makes the interest of the toy gone.

Is no secret that Mattel doesn't produce that much stock for their products. The Disney Cars Diecast community know this very well. The only place's you would see Mattel distribution centers is in popular areas around the world or cities. Then once those get their stock the rest of the world could just get the rest of the stock if there lucky enough

I think the reason for the downfall of Thomas, is the toys, along with the show. When the episodes were very poor quality along with high quality toys, I believe that caused problems, and Misty Island Rescue came out in 2010, which is around when the decline started. When Mattel bought the brand, they wanted to change things up. They completely redesigned trackmaster, and take n play. Like you have often said, the quality of the toys decreased greatly. They improved take n play by replacing it with adventures, but soon after they scrapped adventures, and made “trackmaster push along”. They advertise that trackmaster engines can pull them, and I doubt that kids would want them because of that. The quality of minis was very good in 2015 when Mattel first made them, but in around 2017 the quality dropped. Quality control with trackmaster has also dropped. Online on sites such as Amazon, there are many reviews of upset parents saying they got factory error items. For example, missing decals, faces, parts, and items put in their packing in incorrectly, or the wrong packaging. Factory errors on trackmaster items became very comes recently. The fact that Mattel got rid of wooden railway and replaced it with wood is also a big factor. Even though they are painted again, many engines are too block, too short, or just look off. Mattel cuts corners in every way possible with the toys to save money, but instead it makes them lose money, along with the Thomas brand. When they loose money, they cut corners even more. It is like a continuous cycle that needs to be stopped. In 2017, they stopped realizing DVDs in the US, except for Big World Big Adventures in September of 2019. I also think the fact that the distribution is very poor is another big factor. It is not only like that in Australia, but in many places around the world. If someone wants to buy something and they can’t find it, Mattel won’t get the money from it. Mattel really needs to re-think their toys because it is making the brand struggle.

From the perspective of a Thomas Wooden Railway collector, and someone who hasn't watched the show for years, I think its nearly time that we Let Thomas be. Ill be honest, the shows sort of run its course by this point, and the merchandise just keeps getting worse and worse. Am I happy about this, heck no, but the golden age of Thomas is long over. Can it be recovered, or more appropriately resuscitated by this point? In Australia especially, the decrease of the Thomas section in recent years is saddening, and I wish for the early 2000s merch to return. I was gonna ramble on for longer, but why bother. I just say this and leave it at that. The merch cant lingerer on forever, the show can. With the advent of Ipads and the like, who needs to spend money on toys, when you can watch someone else play with them, or play a app with thomas's way more accurate than the toys. I love the toys, but I think, at least for now, they're going the way of the dodo.
