Great video! I live in San Tan Valley and planted a couple of Thompson Grape Vines last year. wasn't sure what I needed to do with these grapes in the desert and the video definitely helps. I have a lot of clusters this year. I thinned out some of the clusters per a different video I watched. So I'm hoping the remaining clusters ripen properly.
Hey Rick, glad to hear you're starting to see success with your vines! One thing we learned with this variety was to use cane pruning instead of spur pruning. We had to go back last winter and cut back to a head for the canes to grow from. Sold the property this year, but the canes were breaking bud strong before we closed. We never did thin them out and really should have when they set heavy. Even without thinning we saw some amazing production. Hoping those grapes turn out great for you!

That's kind of what we're hoping for with some of these mulberries. In fact, the 3 everbearing mulberries we're harvesting from now are immediately adjacent to our peach trees. The only problem is timing on fruit set for the 2 different crops. I'm not sure we'll have any ripe mulberries when those peaches are ripe!
Great videos! I tried netting my fig tree (one) when the birds came around, only a humming bird got caught in it and did not survive. I took it down right away and felt sad about it. I'm not sure if I can put it up again. I tried the mesh covers for each fig, but that can be time consuming. Oh well, first come first serve . . .
Hey Face It. Yeah, it's tough to net the fig trees, because they grow so strong (right through the netting for us), produce for several months, and we all hate to see little guys caught in them, so we feel your pain there. And yes it's very time consuming to net each fruit. This time of year we pretty much let the birds have dibs until fall when they start producing heavy again. It's just too hot to be out there netting individual figs in August!!!
Your grapes look amazing! I planted Thompson Seedless green grapes this past March. It's a live but that's about all. I am hoping it does well next year and we will see some fruit. How old is your vine? What is your watering schedule please? Is there something special you're feeding your grapes? Any advice you have will be appreciated. Thank you
Hey David. Our vines are about 3 1/2 years old (planted bare root in January 2015) and we had our first harvest from them last year. We fertilize along with the rest of our fruit trees 3 times/year in Feb/May/Sept. For watering, we use 1, 4gph emitter at the base of each vine and in the peak of summer (now) we water 3 times/wk at 3 hours per day. We're going to post a couple of videos on how we water in the next few weeks so keep an eye out for that as we'll discuss grapevines specifically. Hope this helps and don't give up on those vines yet!

When I was in Sonoma some people at the wineries were saying the reason why roses are planted at the end of all the vineyards was because the roses improve the quality of the vine. Do you know if this is true?
I haven't heard of that before. I'm not sure what purpose they would serve. Roses are related to apples, so not any cross pollination that might occur. I'm going to have to research that a bit more to see if there's any connection.
I read that Thompson canes needed 12-15 buds at least since they fruit at the end. How long of a cane would you say that is? I am planting some that I had planned to trellis but it’s 4ft w and 8ft h. I wonder if I grow the trunk up the side if the. 4ft would be enough to get all the needed length.
Hmm, I'm not too sure on that one, but it's probably at least 3 feet. We originally had these vines cane pruned on 6ft spacing and the fruit was still happening within the 3'-6' area above the cordons. I think you would be fine either way, but it wouldn't hurt to see how the buds heading up the sides of each section perform. If your vines are anything like ours you're going to have your hands full keeping them contained in those 4' sections! You'll have to let us know how these do for you.
Hey Ange! We bought these as bare root starts from Home Depot. They usually have them available late December/early January along with the bare root roses.
Hey Mary Ann. Thanks for the kind words. As for the harvest, for now we're eating what we can and sharing with friends and family. Oh and we're also trying our hand at wine making with our Manukka grapes. So far so good...
Oh got it. No we don't sell at farmer's markets...yet. We're working on expansion plans right now that will allow us to increase production on some of the heavier producing crops (grapes, peaches, apples and figs are what we've narrowed it down to for that). Our main production right now is in chicken and pork, but we already have a hard time keeping that in stock. So long story short, I'm sure we will be at a farmer's market or two, but not quite yet.
What kind of income can you derive as a grape farmer from a spread the size of yours? You look at piece, like you are enjoying the life you are building around you.
Hey Steve. Grapes are only a very small part of the farming business we're putting together, so we're not dependent on any one crop. However, it's amazing when you're able to see what abundance can be created in such a harsh environment. It's quite the contrast to the desert surrounding us.
@@EdgeofNowhereFarm I lived in Phoenix for 8 years and saw all the citrus that was grown there. But, all the water was brought in from the Colarodo river. As the river diminishes, the cost of water has to become astronomical. It does perplex me.
@@stevesolo16 that's very true. One of things we're trying to accomplish on this farm is using permaculture principles to eventually capture more water than we use and put it back into our Aquifer. As for the greater Phoenix area, I'm not sure how that will pan out in the long run.

That's a good question Jynxie and I really have no idea. I assume it's simply a cultivar of grape that was found somewhere, but I wouldn't be able to say for certain.
Hello Zay. We actually don't own the property you're seeing in this video any longer and our Thompson grapevines are newly planted vines that won't produce for a couple of years. Sorry we couldn't help you out on this one!
