Thorin's Thoughts - Quake is Back on the Menu (Quake) 

It would be cool if you did a history recap of Quake as an esport for people like me, who were too young and unaware of esports at that time.

Hearing Thorin say "Quake is back on the menu boys" gave me chills. I was too young to be involved with Quake back in the day, but I've always wanted to get the history and stuff behind it. Hopefully we get more Quake

Great to see your perspective! I concur with most of it, and I'd like to add two things: 1) One underplayed aspect of the duel format is the ban-pick phase that involves maps and champions. As the players get more comfortable with the format and their preferences become more known (particularly via the statistics of all of these games played in round robin format), recognizing the match-ups that players are going for in the map and champion selection is _very_ interesting to talk about at a high level of commentary. Casters could spend a huge amount of time talking up/theory-crafting this part, and I'd love to engage in those discussions. 2) My understanding of Clawz is that he has opted to no longer play Quake Champions and focus on other games (Apex at the moment)

I would love more thoorin quake content. Maybe even event coverage if they turn out to be good? Been waiting for a pro leauge for champions for a while HYPE.

I love watching Quake Duels. Next to CS:GO it's easily one of the easiest FPS games to watch. The skill on display is just unbelievable, I hope it does blow up as an esport.

Great analysis. I agree with You 100% (well, maybe 99%, because I personally love that league into placement matches + Grand Final system). I will watch all the Pro League/Minor League tournaments now. Awesome news that they've announced this and that they've decided to get back to normal duel rules. Seeing proper Quake 1v1 tournaments in 2019 makes my heart very, very happy. Yuppie!

went to quakecon this year, was honestly surprised at how little quake there was at quakecon lol, almost all of it was doom or bethesda, saw no quake champions booths or anything like that, there were just the tournament and some random BYOC quake tournaments. guess majority of people were there for doom this year

i love the game but not willing to invest time in it as the playerbase is around 300-500 people online, but the game and franchise is aWESOME, should be on same level as CS:GO, DOTA etc, but the incompetence od the devs is mindblowing, they killed the giant with their ignorance. The only AFPS that might be successful and might save the genre is DIABOTICAL which comes out soon i believe. I agree with 100% being said in this video ginger boy, great job! :)

Clawz is currently playing apex legends for Navi that is why he is not playing in Quake Pro League.

You fail to mention how this new/old timelimit format is (currently) not allowing mirror champion matchups. Xron picked Slash (Q4-like crouchslide) against DaHang specifically to ban her/stop him from using her. Watch the interview after their match. Never had that problem in Duel Rounds at least.

Agree with all of this. Still prefer Quakeworld and Q3, but this is watchable again.

I'm a little surprised you didn't talk about Rapha vs Raisy, the semi finals. If you haven't watched that one, I highly recommend you do. It was an absolutely fantastic series. I would've loved to see Rapha play killsen in the finals, but seriously, Rapha vs Raisy was probably one of the best quake series of all time. People mention Quakecon 2016 finals a lot with Evil vs Rapha, but this one was waaaay better -- in spite of the fact that it's a worse game.

The round robin was AWESOME. If I had to nitpick, all they had to do was to make playoffs on the last day. Like 1st v 8th, 2nd v 7th, 3rd v 6th, 4th v 5th, then semifinals and finals. THAT would be awesome

I would love to see your opinion on quake champions in general, as a game, how it's been handled as e-sport the past few years, the drama and it's true potential as an e-sport. There is a lot to be said about QC, just need the right person to say it.

EVERYONE download the game and try it. We need more players, I think this might be one of our last chances to get playerbase rising. They fucked up when they gave 1 million to first tournament of the game. Pro league should have been put to place in 2017 to get regular tournaments so people would not forget this game. Quakecon had some amazing games. Ive been playing cs go for about 4 years and started quake champions last year. It is a blast! Nice video thorin, I pretty much agree about all the points you made, except different champions works pretty well now. They have balanced them better. I know all the HC fans disagree with me but it brings variety.

was great to watch, i hope viewership goes up even more. i hated the champ idea, but they actually made it work and now the skill level is finally high enough, it has all the great scenes, action, tactics etc. Final was really weird tho, i have never seen cooler play like that also killsen was straight in the matrix.

Unfortunately the Quake Champions player numbers are still really lacking. It says the game is still in Early Access so that gives me at least a little bit of hope that it might get better.

quake live is $10 on steam and still has enough active players. spare yourselves the misery of QC and play the most polished version of any quake title.

The new mode brings it back to the old days but the esports landscape has changed so much since then. There are so many esports titles that Quake has to compete with now and it doesn't have the player base. Quakecon didn't even get a decent viewership. Meanwhile Evo got 200k and fighting games are considered "dead". They have a long way to go but the problem they also need to do it fast. I have a feeling that Quake got this pro League not because Quake Champions was a proven game with a decent audience but because a lot of people in Esports like Quake. So basically it has this 1 season to prove itself. Hopefully they shape up fast. Just fucking advertise this event. Duel is genuinely entertaining to watch but if you're not putting yourself out there, you won't even catch anyone besides the people that were gonna watch it in the first place.

Also you mentioned you thought clawz had the best LG aim ever but then you realised he didn't. The best LG player ever is a Serbian player called Serious he sadly couldn't make it due to visa issues but his LG is incredible he hits 60% left and right any game mode vs any body even good dodgers he even hit 71% vs toxjq in a duel a couple weeks before Quake Con.

As russian players go, there was also base. So Cooller and Base as russian players. Agent told something not quite nice to SyncError and SyncError got mad and didnt want to invite Agent. After few days Agent did get an invite to QC, but said something like: Nah, lol. You kinda suck. Cypher is mostly playing Apex Legend and another free FPS in which you have to control points...forgot the name.

Who did K1llsen beat to get to #1? Did Rapha, Cypher, Toxic, DaHang or Clawz show up? K1llsen is very capable when he plays well so I'm not shocked but honestly it was looking like nobody could beat Clawz or Tox last time I was watching matches.

This version of Quake is dead; its time to move on. 11k max Twitch viewers the final day of the tourney is a joke. That is hardly much better than Rapha and Evil finals during Qcon 2016 (at least 6k) when QL had already been in a long decline. This game hasn't even released from early access yet, already saw its free to play release a year ago, and IT DOES NOT RECEIVE UPDATES ANYMORE aka it is dead. They did not even release a roadmap for 2019 nor did they announce any new content for Quake during this Quakecon. This is also the first time that QC has not seen any sort significant player bump either during or after Quakecon. Players last Monday peaked at 1149 on Steam and today a week later they were at 1430. Oh wow! Definitely back on the menu right?

I liked Quake 2 back in the day. But once Unreal Tournament came out, i sort of ditched Quake altogether. I did play Quake 3 arena when it came out. But still I always felt UT series had better game modes. Unfortunately Epic Games always treated their original flagship series like dirt after UT2004. Once Gears of War came out, they flat out trashed their UT fanbase and through the game series in the trashbin. They started to try and rebuild the game 5 years ago. But Fortnite took off; and back into the trashbin again.

I’m told that the Hitreg and lag for this game is abysmal for anyone who doesn’t rent the apartment above the server room... As someone who only gets about 50ms of ping on average in CS, I couldn’t see myself getting into Quake(though the idea of an even more difficult and fast-paced FPS Champ-based game that isn’t unbalanced to shit intrigues me) or watching its’ professional scene.

I will be completely honest here, Quake needs to be a good game first. The question is... is it ?

In Germany we have a saying: The wish was the father of the idea. I respectfully have to disagree with you here Thorin. Player numbers are down for Quake Champions and from some statements made by the lead developer on twitter we can assume that the game will focus more on esports and less on content updades which I think is not the way to go. Hyping up the game with this event is just an attempt to push some life into a game that is in early access for about 3 years now. Also not a good sign in my opinion. Let's see if the event had the effect that id wants it to be but I am highly critical. But I guess the end note was: Quake is watchable again therefor it is back on the menu again. I think that is a flawed premise in so many ways. The time is different, esports is different, the viewship is completely different and you have to compete with many already established games like Overwatch or CSGO. I think in that sense Quake might be back on the menu but it is that dish that you read and think to yourself "Why would I eat that when I could have a nice CS steak instead?"

Something I think Thorin missed about the final is that Cooller was super aggressive off the top of each of the three maps vs Killsen and failed miserably. He never changed up his playing style to adjust to his amazing aim. Cooller beat Killsen in both game of the tournament play going into the final, but for whatever reason, Cooller just chokes during quakecon; he's never won it - and this year was no exception.
