god the way this builds up is so good... from the way it's implied how important Thors was to the Jomsviking, to the way we already sort of knew based on the flashback that comprised the opening scene. Thors used to be a menace on the battlefield. now he's a man that will pay eight sheep for a slave, who is clearly already dying, just because a single life means this much to him. it doesn't matter who it is... Thors is no longer the man who killed so indiscriminately back then. it's because of this compassion that he can be threatened into leaving his home... but in a deeper way, it's because he ever engaged with this sort of warrior culture in the first place. Floki would have no expectations of him, if that wasn't his past. Thors could hardly expect to outrun this. and while all the children in the village find it impressive that Thors has this legendary status, and is so sought after... Thors sees it as the method of his entrapment. he can't choose to stay where he likes, or do what he wants. he has reached the limits of his ability to be a dedicated husband and father. the only thing he can do for any of them anymore is leave them behind. and just before he goes, Thorfinn starts to display this concerning behavior. the kids say it themselves... Thors rarely talks about himself or his past. he hasn't been able to share his experiences, or pass on what those experiences taught him. and Thorfinn is surrounded by these villagers, who clearly see war as a means to make a name for themselves, and don't realize the true impact of what they'll have to do, or the difficulty of doing it. they're looking ahead, past the process, to the glory of having a reputation like Thors... not at all understanding what that means. when that guy mentions that Thorfinn is strong, and he takes after Thors, I think it probably set off some alarm bells... especially given the nature of his son's behavior. but how can Thors condense all of the things that his vast wealth of experience has taught him, into something digestible for a six year old child? what we're seeing, is his best attempt. "you have no enemies. no one has any enemies. there is no one who it is okay to hurt." and it doesn't even work. not really... Thorfinn has a point. Thors is about to leave, and go to war. his job there will be to kill the enemy. and yet, we're hearing these words from the mouth of an inexperienced child, and we're hearing Thors say "you have no enemies" as one of the strongest warriors that the Jomsviking have ever seen. one of these two people absolutely knows what they're talking about. Thors understands all the things that could be said against his statement, and he said it anyway. not because Thorfinn is a child, but because he believes what he's trying to convey.

also, this is an observation specifically for anyone who has already watched season 1: [HUGE SPOILERS AHEAD FOR SEASON 1] compare the shot at 17:00 to the shot of Askeladd from behind in episode 20, directly after he sends Atli and Torgrim away. here, in episode 2, Leif is talking about how Thors plans to take men, who would be considered able fighters, but are actually ill-suited for the battlefield, and send them away from the fighting, so they can live their lives in peace. the scene in episode 20 features Askeladd sending the last of his men away from his own personal battlefield, because he knows that their time fighting is over... they're no longer suited to this. and it's also Askeladd accepting that he must go and fight alone. he crafted the conditions for the situation he's in. karma has come for him, and he has no choice but to meet it. it's no accident that he's starting to make decisions that resemble Thors, the man in whom he recognized the archetype of the hero Artorius, in the lead up to his moment where he claims the name, Lucius Artorius Castus.

great observation dude Spoiler for S2!! I like how they show the differences between Thors and Askeladd despite them being two sides of the same coin like in S2 E9 Thors gets angry because Thorfinn is still holding onto his anger and hasn't changed, whereas Askeladd encourages Thorfinn to rise up and become a true warrior and a better man
@kamuyking551
@kamuyking551 4 дня назад
@@martinsantiago7900 thank you! [spoilers for season 2] I very much agree, and I think it's also interesting to consider this to be Thorfinn's perceptions of their positions. in reality, Thors would probably understand why his son did what he did... Thors was a warrior for a long time before he decided to become the man that Thorfinn knew as his father. but from Thorfinn's perspective, he's simply spent the bulk of his life directly disobeying his father. meanwhile, I think Thorfinn has been heavily aligned with Askeladd in the beginning of season 2. like, there's that shot from episode 5 where Askeladd is lying there, and Thorfinn has the sword held over him... and Askeladd is probably remembering how he killed Olaf in his sleep, because he hated him so much for putting Lydia through all the hardship she experienced. and that's why he doesn't move. but then, that shot is paralleled again in season 2 episode 4, when Einar nearly strangles Thorfinn in his sleep. Thorfinn isn't awake or aware for that, but it does trigger him to dream of the horrible things he's experienced. both the threat of other soldiers, and the threat he posed to innocent people. I think in both cases, they feel aligned with the mentor they hated. Askeladd with Olaf, and Thorfinn with Askeladd. and it makes them consider what they thought that detestable man deserved. especially now that they've committed similar crimes, and given people outside of themselves every reason to feel similar feelings. for Askeladd, I think he decided that he deserved whatever Thorfinn wanted to throw at him. he wouldn't lie down and die for him, but he'd take it. meanwhile, I think Thorfinn retroactively decides that he might not have ever needed Askeladd to die, no matter how convinced he might've been that he wanted it. in hindsight, it's kind of obvious how Askeladd would've turned into the person Thorfinn experienced. Askeladd turned Thorfinn into something he isn't currently proud of too. abuse is a cycle, because once you learn it, it's all you know. sometimes abused people simply propagate that into the future... it actually takes an incredible amount of effort to break the habit of responding to everything in this way. but I think one of the best things Vinland Saga does as a story, is it tells the tale of imperfect people. they all start from a place they aren't proud of. but if they ever want to get better, then they have to realize that their death isn't what they owe as repayment for their crimes. what they owe is improvement throughout the rest of their life.

as for episode 3... I love the scene between Askeladd and Floki. there's a lot of subtlety going on... like, you'll notice that out in the yard, just before the conversation gets tense, the men yell about how the Christian monk is dead. this means that there's really no reason for anyone to be throwing anything anymore... the spear that eventually interrupts their conversation is there for only one reason. you can also observe Bjorn taking notice of the conversation just before it happens. I think we're meant to assume that Askeladd trusts his men to be watching without looking like they're watching, and to read the room well enough to "assist" negotiations. I think it's safe to assume that Askeladd knew there was a guy behind the banner, at the very least, but it's hard to say whether Bjorn knew it. but even Askeladd's full lack of surprise at the spear is meant to convey to Floki that yes, this is a threat, even if Askeladd has plausible deniability about it. and that's not even getting into the content of their conversation... Askeladd does take the time to ask some of the important questions. why wouldn't Floki finish off Thors himself? is it because he lacks approval from the larger institution that is the Jomsviking? and even then... why couldn't they just take out Thors themselves? it really seems like Floki doesn't think that he and his troops could win. therefore, Askeladd's little question of "shouldn't a Jomsviking deserter of such importance be taken out by one of their own?" is a jab that he knows he can make at Floki, because Floki isn't even sanctioned to do what he's doing. Askeladd can toy with the guy's criteria for honor, especially because his objection to Thors' return is honor based in the first place. it's such an engagingly written scene... also, I just absolutely love the scene where Leif is explaining Thors' plan to leave all the young men in Norway and have them brought back to the village. part of the melancholy of what Thors has to do, is the fact that he genuinely loves the life he's built here. if you fully buy into the idea that he's leaving Thorfinn behind... he might never see him again. or if he does, Thorfinn will probably be all grown up by that point. Thors is looking at a future where he'll miss so much of the life he wants to live. of course he's choosing to do it on his own. he wouldn't wish this on anyone. and so, when Ari asks for a war story later, Thors tells of when Ylva was born. and it's so interesting to see Thors in contrast with himself in that flashback. he used to be so numb to the lives of others, that he'd barely listen to Helga, and even his own child didn't matter to him. then he named Ylva after his own mother, and she started to become an actual person to him. and that was his gateway into empathy for other human beings... she's the reason why he left. and he tells this to Ari, who he plans to send back home very soon. Thors wants him to absorb this message, about how important Ylva is. Thors gave up being a warrior, in order to stay near her. he'd give her his entire life, if it was all his to give. and if Ari really cares about her in the way that he claims, this is the most important thing that Thors wants him to know. if Thors could go back home and continue to be her father, he would. barring that... he can at least do this for her. and I just love that one little part where Thors tries to think of what Helga should tell Thorfinn for him, but he can't sum it up... there's too much, and he can't put words to it, but Helga just says that she knows, and it puts him at ease immediately, because he trusts her 100%. Thors can be understood by a person who knows him that well, but he genuinely does have trouble fully expressing the values that we've seen him display through his actions. he can tell Ari this story of his daughter's birth, he can refuse to hand over the dying slave, he feels awful about being called away but he'll do it to save the village, and he plans to send all the young men back home. there are many examples of how Thors thinks, but he's genuinely not good at explaining it. and then we see the way he can't help but smile when Thorfinn turns up, and he's so excited to see the ocean... like, Thors probably didn't think he'd see Thorfinn again for a really long time, and everything he's heading toward is so dour, but it's just like... that's his kid. it's hard to regret seeing him, in spite of everything.

Day 147 of recommending the openings and endings of "Spare Me Great Lord". I shall go to 150 and then stop, because they obviously don't even see these. It's a chinese anime, so slightly different to the stuff you've reacted to so far, but it's got some of the vibest music and animation I've ever seen.
