I'm a visual artist, not a musician, but I firmly belive what I'll say here applies just as well to music and musicians (and to any other creative endavour). What I am is the sum of experiences brought by my age, my gender, my environment (including my family, my neighborhood and my country), my phobias and my beliefs, so when I express myself, I express all these things. I might accept or even affirm them, I might rebel against them, but they are always a frame of reference for everything I do. You might start creative process because you are driven to, but at the very moment you sit in front of a canvas or a piano, creative choices start. And these depend on who you are at the given moment in time (it wouldn't make much sense - or be much fun - otherwise).
