Beast mode is back! And in today’s new video we’re featuring one of the funkiest rock bassists ever! Flea has been an integral member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers for over 30 years, but there’s a lot more to Michael Peter Balzary (as nobody calls him, lol) than just slappin’ the bass.
Flea has given us some stellar performances over the years, and ALWAYS brings the groove-laden funk that sets the Chili Peppers apart from every other rock act out there. In today’s new video we’re going to take a look at the three times that Flea went beast mode!

Flea and john frusciante had a chemistry that I haven’t seen in any other band; they were like soulmates when playing guitar and bass and that’s why Red Hot Chili Peppers music is always been magical.

I'm 42, so when he was in the hight of his fame for Blood Sugar Sex Magic I was about 15 and he was my number 1 influence to pick up the bass guitar. His aggressive play style mixed with his funky bass lines just resignated with me so much. It was after wanting to be like flea that I grew to admire others like Bootsy Collins, Les Claypool and other great bass artists. But Flea is who started the passion for bass playing for me. He showed me that a bass player doesn't have to be an after thought in the band. That a bass player could be the star 🌟

he inspired an army of people to pick up the bass, who became a pretty substantial portion of the bass community. Just the mere mention of this album has sent me down a rabbithole, reliving my college years listening to all of this. Mars Volta, ATDI, Fall of Troy, Sparta, Coheed & Cambria etc etc etc. Funny, you don't realize how much you miss entire years of music you used to listen to, until it's been over a decade and someone just mentions an album title and you start shaking with anticipation.

Everyone seems so focused on his slapping/funk grooves but I think he shines with his harmony and bassline composition skills. The perfect touch of not overplayed notes. He could do a lot more but only adds what is needed... but it'sunique in a way I can'tdescribe. I think that's the real "sound" of chilipeppers sound and how they made so many hits. @TheMemo659
@TheMemo659 3 года назад
Think we all do that a bit with our favorite bass players. I always say I was taught by Harris, Burton, and Butler because I spent my first 3 years figuring out and mastering their groove. End result, I can (and have) successfully bullshit my way through those band's songs Ive never even attempted JUST from knowing how those guys operate. I play in original bands but have still picked up quite a cover list over the years. Each new bass player "teaches" me new tricks, but that's a lot different from how much the first three I mentioned put a stamp on my style. That stamp is pretty obvious to people who pay attention to bass (so maybe one person every 3-4 shows :D), and I take it as a compliment when someone approaches me and says "Dude!, You play like XXXXXX!" Picking Flea as a bass player to emulate is a solid choice! One tid bit I'll share though (and the point behind my rambling response)..... He is actually who "taught" me slap, and sure enough I'm now locked and stuck with his "incorrect" technique. Flea slaps thumb pointed down with contact point on his thumb knuckle. It works well, and once mastered will give you a VERY loud & bright slap. It will also forever deny you the double thumb technique if you lock into that slap position like I did. Capture his groove and what notes he likes to use for sure, but do your self a favor long term and look to guys like Wooton and Miller for proper hand positioning when you slap.

He's a league of his own, for sure. The first time I watched him live it was not his bass playing skills that struck the audience though (at least initially)... He did the whole gig dressed in two things and two things only: A pair of shoes and his bass. After jumping around the first song - doing his magic with the strings - he walked up to the mic and mumbled something like: "I was very shy as a kid. Guess this is some kinda therapy for me". Then he wen't on to play like only he does the rest of the gig.

I think if he and RHCP played in the 70's they wouldn't have achieved nearly the amount of success they had in the 90's and early 2000's. The true test of an artist's work is the longevity of their work. Now that the band's work no longer has a modern tinge to it, their work has to stand not against modern acts, but stand against musical history. For future generations it will be unbiased comparisons to people like Larry Graham, Louis Johnson on the funk side. James Jamerson and Verdine White on the melodic soulful side. And Jaco Pasterious and Stanley Clarke on the jazz side of things.

No shit! Play along in real time to Mother’s Milk, if you can pull it off you’re better than me, and your whole body will be exhausted. Flea’s one of the greats for a DAMN good reason, few can even do what he does, let alone come up with it on their own. Sure, there are better players, but are there... gnarlier players? I can’t think of one off the top of my head. Trujillo’s close, and Joe Dart in his way, but I don’t think they’d be who they are without there having been a ‘Flea’ right from the get-with.

@@earlgray7003 I believe Flea will always have that «Baby Appeal» (a RHCP song title drop there). Kids hear him and get inspired to play bass. 12-14 year old aspiring bassists all know about him, even today, 30 years after the band’s heyday (they never know any of the names you listed). Even though he may not be the absolute best of the best, he’s a very important «ambassador» for the instrument!

Sometimes the amount of haters you get is just in direct proportion to your amount of awesome. Flea is extremely funky punky freaky styley and accomplished. He is at the top of the mountain of famous bass players. Guys who spend hours practicing chops that no one gives a shit hate that! And there are a lot of those guys. Flea plays from the heart and soul and apparently most guys just can't deal with that. They think technique is the biggest thing deserving of reward. But It's not. People want to move their bums and hearts. Nobody really cares about a math lesson.

I saw RHCP at a festival in 1994, and unfortunately did not appreciate them nearly as much as I do now. Which is a shame because all these years later Flea and Frusciante are two of my favorite musicians.

I don’t think there’s a more influential bassist than flea. You can talk about other greats and what they contribute but i guarantee you more people have picked up a bass because of flea than anyone else.
