The London, Midland and Scottish Railway were pioneers in the field of applying diesel traction on Britain's railways. Their big mainline diesel, no.10000, later classified as D16/1, laid the groundwork for every mainline diesel the UK has ever seen. But, being the first is one thing. Being the best, is another...

Thank you for covering one of my favourite diesels... I really hope the LMS 10000 Project pulls through. It's really important history that needs to be commonplace. It's currently obscure history...

The EE engines these were fitted with, the 16 SVT of 1600 hp, evolved to become, 20 years later, the 16 CSVT of 2700 hp fitted to the Class 50's. That's pedigree.

It didn't actually end there. The final evolution of the EE V16 was the Ruston-Paxman 16RK3CT used in the Class 56.

One of the benefits of asbestos is that it helps to or against rust. Many useful things can be harmful and that list includes water.

I find it unusual that the BR class 37s only made 1750 horsepower, as that’s how much an American GP9 road switcher makes. That seems a bit underpowered.
@FlyingScott
@FlyingScott 8 месяцев назад
It seems intellectually dishonest to compare the loads an American locomotive has to haul to the ones a British loco has to haul.

Where is the headlamp (if there is one) on 10000 and 10001? Is it a like a separately installed removable lamp like on steam locos or am I just not seeing it? (I'm definitely not an expert on UK equipment), just wondering.
@FlyingScott
@FlyingScott 2 года назад
Like steam engines, the lamps have to be put on the lamp irons. Again, proving the D16/1s were very much built with old practices in mind. DP1, however, did have two headlights at either end, just above the buffers.

That class 66 at 0:19 is a European one, is that your own photo? If yes, do you live in Europe? (that NS 500 too, suggests to me you live in the Netherlands?) Great video on one of my favourite LMS designs!

I'm tempted to say the /1's because they proved immediate flexibility. One could match the power of a Black 5, while two could (more or less) match the power of a Pacific without an extra crew. The /2 could closer match a Pacific on its own, but with a much poorer Power/Weight ratio, which carried over to the mediocre Class 40's (and I think the Peaks too by proxy). Never quite understood why the UK seemed to be so adverse to multiple-unit running and I'm still not. Though the rushed dieselization explains it quite a bit more

In the end, I decided to base one of my Thomas & Friends OC’s based off the BR class d16/1 diesels. In real life, there is only 10000 and 10001, but in my Head Cannon, there is a 10002, and that diesel is my OC. His name is Zane.

I find your accent fascinating it sounds like a mixture of Scottish and Welsh but from one of your comments it turns out your Dutch which doesn't clear up the accent much, but I digress.
@FlyingScott

Over the years my accent watered down to the point I had to force a Received Pronounciation dialect in high school. It never really recovered, I suppose. I still get the occasional person who thinks I'm Irish, Welsh is a new one, but I'm used to it. Thanks for watching!
