Yes, after listening to Johnny's version on the Grease movie soundtrack....everybody else just cannot pull it of like he does. Their singing sounds like they are about to crawl away somewhere to die.
I was 13 when their TV show came on in 1977. I loved it and still love to hear their music. I saw them in concert one time a few years after the show had ended. Got to meet Bowzer and get his autograph. He was a super nice guy who just really enjoyed meeting and talking to his fans.
Sha Na Na came on TV shortly after my 10th birthday in 1977, and my father took me to see one of their concerts when I was a teenager and I loved it! I STILL love them now as much as I did then!
Denny was brilliant and the best dancer of the group! He was in charge of the dancing and routines regarding their brilliant dancing. He had a smooth voice to
I got a cool story about Sha Na Na.... Back in the 70's I was an awkward French Canadian teenager in Montreal who had just discovered Doowop and I went crazy buying 45's at Sam the Record Man. Our TV was OK at best and one night I caught their show by accident but in those days, we had clear channels with the basic cable and then others out of range or not serviced by cable but this one channel I could almost get it in clear but still with a fair bit of "snow".... But I would work on that freaking TV knob for hours trying to get the best picture possible and one of those night, that song came on the program and man....I almost cried... I never expected this angelic voice from a doowop revival band but there it was....sound was clear and I could see their gold outfits through the snow... Man, this song brings me right back to my youth.... Not a good youth for me in general but this show cheered me up some....
I wholeheartedly agree with Chris. The first time I heard Johnny sing this song live was two years ago at Bowzer's Holiday Party in Clearwater. This is his song and he TOTALLY owns it! I just wonder if Johnny remembers how quickly I jumped up out of my seat to award his performance with a standing ovation. His voice is off the hinge--such a treat to hear him sing it live.
That is amazing! I was singing this song tonight on my deck with an open fire and thought I'd look it up on youtube to see if Johnny was still around and performing and so happy to see he is better than ever! Great job!!!!
I miss the simplicity. I was 6 yrs old. So many of the great performers and actors were still alive. great shows were still being produces or in syndication. The Nation and the world seemed a lot less crazy.
Johnny is one of this genre's best. So many great performances over the years! His voice has remained powerful and spot on. Thank you, Johnny, for all the great memories.
Always loved Sha Na Na, Johnny’s voice is great. Grew up watching Bowser and the guys, Happy Days, Grease, etc. Love 50’s Doo Wop music, still do to this day!
I took a good look, and this isn't the Linda Hamilton who had her own television show and got it cancelled by asking for her character to be killed off.
NO! It's an older Johnny Contardo with the same singing voice! Sadly, he didn't have any children, but if he did, it's possible he might have his grandchildren join him on stage!
You just don't recognize him because of his extra weight, white hair, and aged voice. I had the same problem, too, and I had to take a closer look at his face! Thankfully, he STILL has his dreamy brown eyes!
