"Those panels are going to FLY off!" (according to the internet) - 3M VHB Tape

(NOT a sponsored post) According to the internet, they say the camper panels are going to completely fly off on the freeway. Therefore, I wanted to do a test on how much force is required to separate the panels once the tape has cured.
Conclusion: I don't think the wind can compete with a pry-bar.

The internet is full of people who spew forth absolute nonsense; it's almost a hobby for them, just like trolling is to some. I have plans to make a camper trailer using VHB to attach the aluminium panels; it took me less than 10 minutes research to know that it would be perfectly suitable. 3M are the World's best at what they do; making specialist tapes. Ignore the doubters, you won't regret using it.

Back in the late 90s I worked on a product that used an internal lead-acid battery. It weighed a few pounds and *hung* in place from a single strip of what I presume was VHB tape. The product passed all the drop and vibration tests. That changed my mind forever about the stuff. The problem is, there are many imitations that perform quite poorly, and they gave tape a bad name.

Great video! I think people are mistaken because if anything the worry of panels "flying off" should be placed on the event of an actual crash or accident. People should just roll down the window when driving at 60 mph and stik their hand out in an horizontal position, that would give them a sense of the stress the wind is putting on the panels.

I love that people think that the adhesive on the tape will fail but that the adhesive used to make the panels won't... The contact area of that foil to the skin is minuscule. They are both going to be fine.

The one area of concern would be elevated temperatures. On a very hot summer day, if you paint a panel black (or other dark color), and considering the very good thermal conductivity of aluminum the bond could be significantly weaker. With that said, removing VHB tape sealing a computer screen to a device using a hot air station still takes a lot of effort. Even with a weaker bond, it would take a significant amount of force to separate the parts.

That's a good test. You're good to go. I remember doing a similar test and thinking yup, this is the stuff. I built my own camper in 2019. I used 1"AL square tube with .050 AL sheet double sided taped to it. I used about 600 feet of 3M CV62F. So far I spent 189 nights sleeping in my camper. I've taken it off roading all over the place from the mountains and deserts of California to the Maze District of Canyonland lands national park.I beat the crap out of it. I've rammed it into trees and rocks. It's holding up just fine. That tape is crazy strong.

The problem with DIY folks using VHB tape for adhering things is that many DIY folks fail to prep the surface properly. I've seen them using the tape while doing virtually no surface prep whatsoever and also failing to follow the very specific instructions provided by 3M. Applied to dirty skoolie roofs with sketchy paint jobs, for example. No, I do NOT want to be following that thing down the highway, thanks. The examples of the commercial uses of these tapes shows that they certainly CAN perform under tough conditions but you can bet that the tapes were used with extreme caution and strict adherence to whatever protocols applied to the type of tape used, the surface to which it was applied, and the items that were secured. It's all about the prep and proper application.

I use knockoff non-3M tape for scooting vinyl plank flooring around, after the floor is assembled. Stick some tape on a 2x4, stick the 2x4 to the tile you need to move, stand on the 2x4 for a moment, whack the 2x4 with a hammer, tile will move. Tighten up gaps, move a gap a tile at a time out to the edge, etc. That stuff holds up to pounding with a hammer, and then is a royal pain to remove from the tile afterwards. Genuine 3M stuff, properly clamped and cured, will have no issue at all with highway speeds.

Many people just talk for the hobby of talking, many speak without even having tried this tape, or they have tried it but joining a greasy panel with a panel full of dust, and then they complain because the two panels come apart. Anyway, I think one thing has to be clarified: it's not only a temporary test of the adhesive's resistance under stress that counts, it's also important to determine its resistance over time. And such a test can only be made by time itself. I've tried some tapes that seemed extra-strong in the moment I had just applied them, but, after a while, they lost their bond strength by themselves, without even any stress test. Furthermore, I think the deformability of the surfaces you join is an important factor to take into consideration. If you place a wooden plaque on a wall, the wood may tend to warp over time, and, if the tensions generated by the wood are high, it's not certain that the double-sided tape will be able to retain the deformations without detaching from the contact surface, or without damaging them.

Their are a lot of people that just don't know science and technology. Even most windshields are held in place today with basically a sophisticated caulking. You really have to read the specifications of glues and such. Many manufacturers ad a rivet or screw in key locations just to avoid a law suit. That was a great test but you need to include, various cycles of temperature changes, direct sun, vibration, body frame flexing, humidity, frost etc. In aviation, harmonic frequencies from an engine, which you can't feel, can destroy an airplane just a little at a time until it disintegrates mid air. Expansion and contraction is a major cause of metal fatigue. Just like a paper clip, it will break.

Well if a pry bar falls off the back of a truck on a freeway (virtually no one secures their tools correctly) and bounces at the correct angle and you are driving at the correct distance and speed for that pry bar to jam itself between the panels and then an extra resistive force like a parachute was to also attach to the other end of the pry bar and then deploy it might separate the panels making them fly off. See! the panels are going to fly off.

@BadassBrunette
@BadassBrunette Год назад
The point of this video was to show how much effort is required to pull them apart. If my camper is undergoing THAT level of stress, I think my biggest concern will be wondering why Im in a not-so-good situation where my camper is being ripped apart. In other words, me driving down the road won't make the panels come off. Roughing up the edges could make a tiny difference but certainly not enough for me to redo all the panels at this point.

Strong stuff... however, your experiment doesn't factor in 2 things; deterioration because of weather influences over time. (Car roofs can get hot, real hot... and then cool down fast with rain). And ofcourse paint, always the weakest link with any bonding agent. So best sand down to bare metal if you're bonding to painted surfaces.

So I was planning on buying these 3M's VHB so I could stick my acoustic foam panels to my wall, question is, would it ruin the paint once I attempt to carefully rip the tape off the wall? Is the tape really that effective on lightweight foams to concrete walls?
@thomasfeiller2207
@thomasfeiller2207 7 месяцев назад
One problem I see in this comparison is that she is clamping the pieces together with a lot of force. Most of the applications I see are affixing a solar panel to a camper or trailer roof. You can't get anywhere near that amount of force in that situation. The people simply press down on the components. I'm about to install panels on my trailer and am debating the right implementation. I hate to drill holes in the roof but struggle to trust an adhesive. Will have to do some more research and some sort of test. We also need to acknowledge the heat up then cool down cycle which typically has a strong impact on adhesives. This test does not address this. Thumbs up. Like your sense of humor... "gotta keep 'em separated"... I'm always quoting that song in situations like this.

(a) do you really think spoilers and wings are clamped on for hours at a time before use ? and (b) do you know how many pounds of forces are generated by a good rear wing, usually trying to rip the spoiler off ? A darn sight more than you can pull with your hands. I'm sure many spoilers and wings can be attached using double sided tape but many will come off too because of poor installs and the shear forces.
