Thought we had a fox in our live trap. What happens next is amazing!

My husband found a mountain lion in my son's live trap the other morning. They check the trap on a daily basis and just enjoy looking the animal (generally fox) and then releasing it. Great video.

I wish I saw this before I watched it, in a way, but I didn't mind the full clip at all. Everything seemed ideal for me, as far as there being a husband and wife, and the wife is filming it. It was an amazing moment and I'm glad they caught the whole situation, sticks and all. Their lives could've changed, their whole family's lives could've changed in an instant. It trips me out more to see a loved one recording vs a hiker doing a self shot encounter.

Interesting video. I enjoyed it. But, could we please stop with the dumb clickbait "what happens next is Amazing!!" headlines? I'm so tired of people doing that. The mountain lion reacted exactly the way you'd expect it to: it ran away. It was not "amazing!"
@DieFlabbergast
@DieFlabbergast 7 лет назад
It's clickbait - pure and simple. "What happens next is amazing"! No, it wasn't. What happened was perfectly ordinary and just what you would expect.
@RandomTXDude210

Fuck. That. I'd have done the same thing, release that beautiful creature back to the wild, but I'd be so damn terrified the entire time. The trapper makes a very good point about how many other trappers would just shoot and bury this cat instead of dealing with it like this.
@Krazycutiegurlxxx
@Krazycutiegurlxxx 9 лет назад
It takes balls to do what this guy did, so respect points. I have no respect for people who would do otherwise though, even if i can understand why they would. If you trap and animal you have no right to kill it needlessly just because you're anxious about what it might do as you try to free it. Obviously it's best to prevent this kind of thing from happening.
@Krazycutiegurlxxx
@Krazycutiegurlxxx 9 лет назад
Hero✩Lydragius Again though, respect points for this guy. He was probably scared too, but courage is acting despite fear, not being fearless.
@TheBigMallo
@TheBigMallo 9 лет назад
Hero✩Lydragius im not an expert but couldn't he just light a fire infront of the cage with a lighter if he has one and leave the cage open, and when the fire goes out the lion could just walk out? you are risking it all catching fire in a massive blaze but im pretty sure if the fire got that bad it would just end up jumping through the fire anyway. if not then you got some bbq meat atleast
@Krazycutiegurlxxx
@Krazycutiegurlxxx 9 лет назад
BEEFCAKE!!! ...What exactly is a fire supposed to do? It would either cause a forest fire, be too small to do anything, scare the animal and possibly make it more aggressive or, in any case, not help in any obvious way.
@TheBigMallo
@TheBigMallo 9 лет назад
Hero✩Lydragius well my thinking was if you got a decent size fire it might deter the big ass cat for maybe 20 seconds, enough time for you to get in your car

Again, thank you. Every single one if these lives counts. I'm not for trapping, nor am I against it. I believe there's a proper way yo take from the life cycle of this planet. @justincasey6319 8 лет назад
Monica Listodos My husband grew up trapping for fur etc... He has always been a hunter and an outdoorsman. I on the other hand, am a "lover not a fighter"..lol! So he still hunts, but no longer traps using traditional (painful and inhumane) methods. So this was a great compromise between he and myself to allow our boys the experience of trapping something (without mutilating its limbs) and then releasing the animal. They get to see the animal up close, my husband teaches them about what he knows about the animal and then bon voyage, away they go. People have said that this causes the animal an undo amount of stress, but animals as well as humans experience stress of all kinds on a daily basis...and somehow we all make it out alive and emotionally ok. I would rather have my kids see animals that are briefly held in a trap and released as opposed to living their life forever in captive at a zoo. Just food for thought :)

Ok I don't know if this is good/bad/illegal/whatever, but please check trap every day. A trapped animal (not killed in trap) is borderline cruel-harmed or not. Or ask wildlife people if this is ok to do-I bet not. What if there's some family emergency-you gotta leave town fer week or so-live animal stuck in cage! It is beautiful tho, but not in the cage. This animal does not want to be trapped for your entertainment.I was sad for it. If you explore the woods enough, go camping/etc...you will see things like this where they belong. It takes a while (nature is nowhere near as populated as in TVshows/zooz, but the patience pays off. And then that encounter(s) become yours forever and put a smile on your face.

It's one of those traps that when the door snaps shut, there is a small metal ring on each side that slides down and holds the door closed. He had to use sticks to slide the rings up and hold them in place. (they kept breaking) Has to be the dumbest trap design ever.
@SoWe1
@SoWe1 8 лет назад
So next time you want to open this thing safely, here's an idea: First, barricade it from the outside with a sturdy piece of wood, one end wedged into the ground (partially buried perhaps), the other side wedged into the door. That way if someone or something pushes on the door to open the piece of wood acts as a stopper. Tie a string to it so you can pull the wooden stopper away from a safe distance. Now disable the mechanical device on the trap that keeps the door from opening. Attach a second string to the door to open it from a safe distance. Go to a safe distance, pull the first string, the door can now open. Pull the second string, the door is now open.

Why in heavens name would anyone trap animals and put them through all that stress just to look at them. How would you feel if it were done to you????

Why are you trapping animals in the first place?
@amyp8507

+Franmom Momm Because its better than hunting them down, plus i mean, its a fox trap. I dont think anyone would ever want to kill a fox unless they had to.

+Franmom Momm usually people will create live traps so that they can see an animal up close. I have done it many times and it is a wonderful experience. I have caught lions, foxes, deer, and even a wolf.

you can tie hay strings or wire to the rings and and bottom of the door.. then open them from the top of the cage without getting so close the the animal.. i have one of those traps too.. rolling them is hard cause they are so large.. the hay strings work perfect for me.. and don't prevent the rings from working..

***** Sorry. Somewhere buried in the comments I explained that the trap is designed to be rolled twice so that the rings on the sides of the door fall down and the door then falls open. This was not an option because the trap was frozen to the ground. Plus we didn't want to frighten the animal any further. The trap is easy to open if its a small animal that is in there because you can easily slide the rings up and let the animal out. We never roll the trap anyway. Thank you for your interest on the video. The animal is so beautiful.

You set a trap just to look at the animal, then release it? That's just being cruel and terrifies the animal for no reason other then for your entertainment

That was incredibly dangerous. I think his saving grace was that this cougar was fairly young and scared. Had it been full grown and more aggressive he or his wife could have been mauled. A job best left to forest and wild life services, who could relocate the animal safely.
@rediop4309
@rediop4309 9 лет назад
The guy give good safety advice to his wife/friend to go back to the car and close the window but himself is taking insane risks. What if this wild animal decide to go in your way or just pursuit you? You speak about getting mauled, this is exactly what you risked. Why don't you have a cord, you pull quietly while in your car? You're smart enough to put traps like that but to release a dangerous animals, you need to be just 5 meters away? Ok you got steel balls but one day you risk to finish mauled just to capture and free a wild animal. Well, it's your life and not mine you're endangering.

Justin Casey already explained that the trap was designed so that you'd have to roll it twice to get to all of the locks on the door, plus the cage was frozen to the ground, so even if he did decide to risk pissing/scaring the mountain lion even more by rolling it around, he couldn't move it. That, and it was a fox trap, so they were utterly unprepared to find a mountain lion inside the trap. Besides, she looked pretty healthy for a wild animal, so I doubt she would've gone after him out of any sort of desperation, so long as he didn't block her path to freedom (which he wisely didn't). My only critique is that it might have been a good idea for him to softly talk to the lion so she wouldn't mistakenly think he was trying to ambush her (the reason I think she hissed and swiped anytime his hands suddenly came into view when she otherwise couldn't see him), but again it's only a critique, and a fairly mild (if not irrelevant) one at that. All in all, I think he handled the situation pretty well given the circumstances.

Patrick Dupont Even though a mountain lion is a dangerous animal, and you should take precautions, it probably would not have attacked him. As the other person said, it's not like it was starving and desperate for food, so it probably wouldn't have wanted to eat him. Not only that, but people that deal with wild animals generally carry guns with them, so if it did indeed decide to attack him, he would be able to defend himself. And lastly, if an animal is trapped, the thing that it wants most to do is flee, and so it did.

KarlAndArma4ever heh yeah personally, i would've called animal control to come out and tranq it. then we could pull it out of the trap and wait for it to wake up and leave.
