The fact that I never miss a “Supposedly Fun” video and the fact that I never skip to the “Friday Reads” portion should tell you how I feel about your channel. I spent months lurking on your channel before I hit the subscribe button. Lurking for all that time showed me that you’re the real deal. I also couldn’t resist the good vibes given off when you and Joel and Teddy are in a room together.❤

It’s been such a pleasure getting to know you over the last few years, Greg. Your honesty and integrity are so obvious and very much appreciated. I love that you’ve introduced us to Joel and shared the joys and pain of life with our beloved furkids. You’ve introduced me to fabulous books and authors. Your book joy (hello, Demon Copperhead, even though it’s not something I want to read) is so contagious and we all know JOY is our word going forward. Your channel, you, Joel, the pups, bring me great joy. So thank you for that! 💜💜💜

I watched your initial video, and you were so polished after only 6 months! Also love the mustache…Imagining the two of you with identical mustaches made me smile. ❤ You’ve built something incredible and much loved here, Greg, you really should be so proud. Here’s to another 5+ years!

I’m a fairly recent subscriber, and first time commenter. This was a really fascinating watch. Especially for someone such as myself, who has only been actively reading since the start of this year. I’d just like to say that I genuinely enjoy your little corner of the WWW… and please never question your eloquence and ability to speak articulately. More power to you Greg. Best, John.

Something fun that I started doing was to order a book (or 2😉) from independent bookstores across the country as well as GB and Ireland. That way I throw a little support their way and,if it’s included, collect book markers that they include in the order! Thanks to you, I’ve ordered from Montana Book Co.,Parnassus, Gutter Books, and The Winding Stair as well as several others including Birch Bark books in Minneapolis. And, yes, I fully support my local indie book shops and county libraries 😉

Admittedly, you and I have different perspectives on many matters, but I have a lot of respect for you. Your channel challenges me (in good ways) and makes me think back through certain convictions. I think you have a lot of wisdom, and I enjoy your authentic musings on books and life. Wishing you and Joel and Teddy nothing but the best that life has.

Interesting reflections! I like the space you have created here. I do like if people tell me if they read a book with their eyes or their ears, just because the narrator can influence how someone experiences a book. But it is really only helpful if they also say whether they liked the narrator or not, because then I can try to gauge if their opinion of the book itself was coloured by it.

This is the first of your videos I have ever watched. I have subscribed because I like your ethics. As for repeating things, if they are important for people to know then you should repeat. Not only for those who are regular subscribers that might have missed it but for those who are new to your channel. Occasional videos like this would be helpful in keeping us up to date on how you feel about things.

Hi Greg, I enjoy your videos so much because you go into depth about topics so care about. I just had my fourth year anniversary on this week and even though mainly shouting into the void, it’s still worth it because of the people I need here. I’m not only talking about my few faithful subscribers, but the booktubers who have made my life more interesting and richer as I reach 3/4 of a century on this planet. My daughter is gay and is getting married in November. I’m very happy that we live in Hawaii where the local culture welcomes gay people. Of course, I am an ally and never blink an eyelash when my daughter told me she was a lesbian. She’s a very private person. It was only recently that she felt comfortable talking about her private life. Not to worry, she has given me her blessing to tell everyone she is getting married and is a lesbian. Yay! Sorry for the long comment I was very touched by this video. I guess my channel is too small for hate comments, but I’m a very sensitive person so I guess I would not have handled it well. It’s very hard for me to get new books as I’m on a fixed income so I don’t do many recent book prize lists. But I like to watch other peoples videos and shot some names of books down for the future when my library gets them. I wish you all the best in your channel and in your life. Aloha friend.

Greg, never let any tell you that you're not eloquent-not even yourself! I think one (relatively minor) problem the literary world has is that everyone sounds brilliant on paper, and in reported anecdotes, and scripted speeches, but then they run into people in real life who expect authors to be just as witty as their characters, and speakers to articulate themselves with a post-editing level of poise. No one is as good at speaking as they wish to be, but I think most people come across better in the eyes of others than they lead themselves to believe when they have the dreaded task of watching themselves back. 😂

So much of this is fascinating. I have wanted to read Gone With the Wind for years - I'm trying to read every book that has won the Pulitzer prize for fiction. I'd buy a digital copy and read it that way so no one knows haha.

I absolutely agree with your reflections (thank you for sharing). And that we have to know our values and morals. So if an author goes against these - as you personally see it - then that is important to acknowledge. It matters who we support. And it’s very true that you can - in the example of JK - “keep” your nostalgia for HP if you want. I will not let her take that nostalgia away from teenage me, but I will always make it clear how I feel about JK and never buy sth by her again, go to the theme parks or platform/review the books. JK btw is also harmful to any woman/femme who isn’t the “right” kind of woman. Which is very excluding/elitist of her - it screams white feminism, and intersectional feminism is how we better ourselves and stop the patriarchy from their “divide and conquer” strategy. (Sorry about the rant, lol) Great video! Really good point about whether to get involved and/or educate yourself bc we have a responsibility with what we promote and engage with.

Haven't missed one of your videos since I've subscribed. Love it whether I agree or disagree with your book assessment, but more often, I agree. I became more conscious of buying from independent bookstores too. Found both Parnassus and The Bookshop in Nashville and loaded my suitcase. Unfortunately, because I retired in Mexico, Amazon has been my go-to, but when I fly home, it's always a book haul at an independent.

Wonderful reflections, Greg! I have often toyed with the idea of recording my own booktube videos, however I get enough comments from people correcting me, criticizing me, trashing me etc over on my blog site. Not sure I could handle more in another space! The internet is a strange space. But love your videos as always, Greg. Cheers!

@SupposedlyFun 17 дней назад
@debbiejefferies @jordana99 In the early days (before I had a BookTube channel), I was looking for a name for my blog. It started as a bit of a reach for a literary pun (the full name of the blog was "A Supposedly Fun Blog I'll Never Read Again," as a nod to David Foster Wallace). But what I really liked about the shortened version is that it acts as a reminder to myself that this whole thing is supposed to be fun. It's come in handy whenever I start to feel stressed about having a channel for any reason. And it's an acknowledgment that even though this is supposed to be fun, it's a lot of work! So if it's ever not fun, I need to take a step back and recalibrate.

I’ve been thinking about the most banned books in America recently. For example, 1984 was on my O’level English literature syllabus when I was 15. It’s strange that books I’ve read as part of my education are banned in USA. I can’t get my head around that.

Like Greg, I don’t buy anything on Amazon. My reason my be different than his (and you didn’t ask me for my opinion so forgive me for butting in). I think Amazon has hurt small local businesses many of which have closed. Each month I see at least one small business close and a service business has taken their place. Retail stores are getting scarce in my community.

I respect your decision to not promote Gone with the Wind. I do not feel generational guilt about slavery as a Caucasian but I am increasingly aware that I take advantage like most people on the planet of modern day slavery for example the children who work mining for minerals which are used to manufacture our mobile phones. I really want to read literature that speaks to modern day slavery which we can impact rather than looking backwards

You can listen to an audio book but not read it. That’s the only reason why the phrase ‘reading an audio book’ rubs me the wrong way. You read with your eyes, not your ears. Regardless, I think audio books are excellent and a wonderful way to delve into the world of a book when you wouldn’t be able to otherwise.
