Hello my dears!
My name is Sydney and I’m an actress/singer-songwriter who writes music about my experiences being autistic, disabled, gay, and in general, a human. My goal is to fill musical gaps and write about things people often forget to make music about. I’m also a vintage enthusiast and disability advocate (among other things). I’ve now released 2 albums and, most importantly, my favorite color is buttercup yellow.

Hey friends! I forgot to talk about if ABA works (the answer is a definitive... uhhhh maybe no?) so here are some studies for ya: www.cochrane.org/CD009260/BEHAV_early-intensive-behavioral-intervention-eibi-increasing-functional-behaviors-and-skills-young therapistndc.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Annual-Report-on-Autism-Care-Demonstration-Program-for-FY-2020.pdf?fbclid=IwAR2VRj3ygZ4nfVsgMY4UNFXn6hxB9kuEGxSlWfx9uwaItEhfsz_NmquhtFo

Damn... thank you. I'm also late diagnosed and had been taught that all my emotions were 'wrong'. I learned to try to avoid my emotions and masking all the time and I forgot who I was and ended up with recurring severe depressions. I couldn't learn any emotion regulation because of the alexithymia that partly came from the gaslighting that had happened in my education and at school. ('the music is NOT loud', you should not feel that way, they are not bullying you, you're just sensitive etc.) I was taught that I had to sit through everything and not complain, and that I could not ask people in my environment to change anything (like, opening a window, lowering the volume, writing things down for me). I has had enormous consequences. Metaphorically, I'm a broken person. But I'm learning and feel so much better since I got my autism diagnosis.

What's worse is that we don't even treat DOGS like this. Yes, we do teach dogs to respond to commands such as, "sit," "stay," "lay down," "come," "leave it," "drop it," and only offer a treat or other desired item once the command is complied with. However, we don't make a dog learn to tolerate being petted, or at the very least, learn to say, "don't pet me."

Holy [expletive deleted] that was an intense story. My initial diagnosis was anxiety and depression (in grad school, so student still but post-college age) and I cant even imagine if that therapy was applied in my case. "Pretend you are happy and not anxious or we will shock you/deprive you of some reward". Yeah, because threats of punishment are a sure way to reduce anxiety (sarcasm voice). Wow.

I've seen some videos of this "therapy" being applied, and it took me back to how I was bullied as a kid, by pure power and group coercion, removing any possibility of me being able to escape, my movements carefully controlled, my person being at their whim. I'm more amazed there aren't those that are involved with this, including parents and supposed caregivers, that aren't killed by those subjected to it, out of self-defense to make it stop. Perhaps because they're too controlled for too long, and have no time to learn about self-defense and the darker aspects, because they're tortured as a full-time job by others. I don't believe my parents would have ever allowed this to happen to me willingly, if I'd had the diagnosis as a kid: my autistic older sister did end up getting some sort of forced "evaluation" by the state for (I think) about a month, not sure what they did at the county facilities, but it changed her, and not for the better. My parents weren't given a choice in that regard, that was in the 70s. It wasn't until the movie "Rainman" that I think she was recognized by my family as being autistic, and I have no clue what was on state records. ABA is nothing less than the bully method of forcefully, nonconsentially erasing the self of the targeted person. It needs to end, period.

My best friend a 70 year veteran of physical therapy used to say you cure meat, not people. He was damned as over protective, for nurturing clients. Keep fighting!

The problem is that even those of us who have never received ABA therapy may have received this very same message from people such as parents/guardians, teachers, or other people around whom we should feel perfectly comfortable being ourselves. I realize that this may not be (or have been) the message that is/was intended, but this is/was how we understand (or understood) it.
