Thoughts on Current Events in our Community

The chameleon community, the reptile community, and, well, any community. We have humans being humans. We can't get away from ourselves, but maybe we can carve out one little corner of life where we can keep things quiet!
I share some thoughts about relating in the reptile community inspired by the recent strangeness surrounding a social media attack on Adam Wickens of @WickensWickedReptiles . He showed a sterling example of how to handle being the focus of a cancel attempt. Anyone who has done a video could learn from these events! But I would like to also talk about how you can prevent getting swept up yourself in one of these community destructive campaigns.
This is the end of this week's daily vlogs and I hope I can send you into the weekend inspired to protect your well being and keep your chameleon keeping a healthy part of your life.
Do you want to learn how to check for parasites in your chameleon yourself?
Hunting Microscopic Chameleon Parasites is an asynchronous course you take at your own pace while supported by the instructor, fellow students, and the alumni. This is a community powered course so you are doing it on your own time at your own pace, but you are not doing it alone!

You're totally right. And I can not thank you enough for your work and knowledge you share. You helped a lot of chameleons live a better life.

I appreciate this video so much. People need to be reminded to be kind. They become so engulfed by the way social media has become that they forget the power that it holds. This is great for getting information out and sharing within the community. But it is horrible when done like this. I saw all of this play out from start to current and I can’t honestly say i thought it would go so far. I’m sad to see it turn out like it did and more than anything I hope it doesn’t stop any of you from creating your content. The good, the bad and the unfortunate is needed. The knowledge helps. The platforms you guys have created will help more people for many years to come. Dont let one person ruin it please. ❤

Unfortunately, these campaigns can cause real damage and these people know very well how much power they have. They are deliberately trying to take other people down. So I wish I could give you the bravado that we content creators will stay the course, but there can be lasting effects of anti-social campaigns like what we saw happen. It is just part of being in the public eye. It shouldn't be, though, and it would help if the community would nip these things in the bud and not let it get to where it got. Anti-social campaigns change direction like the wind and never care what the long term effects are. Thank you for the encouragement!

It's what the internet is being manipulated into. Purposely. Division, diversion.

The 6 leos in a 4x2x2 drama of 2024... Im down for finding out if they do well but not in a small enclosure. I saw a lot of his responses since my main platform is Tiktok. My 11 year olds are more mature. His responses told me he really didnt care about those animals. It wasnt for research. It was for views, shock value and to get people talking. He got what he asked for just not in the way he wanted. It was an immediate unfollow at that point for me. I have reptiles missing limbs from being cohabbed. At the end of the day, its not worth risking my pets life.

I also didn't realize people were still talking about him. I unfollow and move on.

Adam's responses were probably more a reflection of what he thought of how he was approached and the people who attacked him rather than his love for animals. Although I did not see the back and forth on TikTok I would be interested to see where Adam was approached with a mature, collaborative manner and then was met with an immature response. The validity of a position on cohabitation - either way- does not justify the manner of attacking others. When I get someone in my comments section frothing at the mouth about how I don't know anything and I don't care about animals, my first response is not to consider this person a rational discussion partner and enter into a calm exchange of ideas. And I really don't know anybody that would. You can decide Adam no longer holds your respect because of how he responded to an antisocial campaign to end his livelihood, but is that how we should be handling these types of husbandry debates? Once again, I won't enter into the subject of leopard gecko cohabitation. I have my hands full with people who want to cohabitate chameleons. But social media mobs that look to destroy a person's livelihood for a disagreement on husbandry is a dangerous genie to let out of the bottle. Mobs obey the person who whips them up. They do not consider the nuances of the subject - or the possibility they are wrong.

The only value in seeing it happen was seeing how easily the community can shoot itself in the foot. It was not one of our finest moments.

Of course I missed all the drama, which I’m not complaining about at all. I am sad however that we can’t have different ideas and opinions without being attacked.

Healthy debate is what keeps us sharp. But this event showed what happens when followers are whipped up to do the bidding of an influencer. That is a toxic dynamic. It will always be used so it will never go away, but we can all watch out for it and, at least, ensure we don’t get caught up being part of something like that.

While I don’t agree with internet pile-ons and didn’t contribute to the attack on Adam’s character, I don’t believe in co-habbing leos. Yes they are found in lose ‘groups’ in the wild, but this is over large spaces, much much larger than we could replicate in captivity. For me, the countless documented cases of co-habbed leos being injured, starved and even killed doesn’t feel worth the risk. I’ve kept leos for a number of years, they each have 4 foot vivs but won’t ever be in contact. For me if they ‘might’ fight, why risk it??

I will have to leave the cohab part of the debate to people in the leopard gecko community. The deeper issue is how do we handle husbandry debates? That is the part that I can weigh in on. We will never be free of people trying to weaponize their followers. Though we can recognize the attempt and not let it take hold. This kind of dynamic does no good for the reptile community.

I think discussing the possibilities of co-habbing female Leo's is an option but then we need to figure out how large do we need to make this space to ensure the animals safety. The animals safety is what's super important to me. I also have animals missing limbs from co-habbing. I have a Leo and a beardie.@@ChameleonAcademy
