This was the first mother game I ever played. (I know, weird choice, but it had just came out on wii u) Honestly, I think this game has the most interesting history. And yes, I thought ninten looked like a lemon. And the encounter rates are insane. But I beat it and loved the story. It's definitely better than Mother 2s. (And yes, you can say what you want about that hot take) But putting that aside and looking at it for what it was and is, it's a charming little NES game. Also, more people need to talk about the vocal version of The Paradise Line.
I just beat mother 2 yesterday and got to say I agree with that hot take. There's just something about Nintens story I liked more. Ironically enough I ended up thinking earthbound got to repetitious for me although that could be because I just played both games not to to far off from each other. Also the 8 melodys are better than the 8 'your sanctuary' locations.
I think it has the best plot but playing it isn't as fun as 2/earthbound. Oddly enough the one I think is the most fun to play is the one I feel with the weakest plot. I even enjoy the novelization of mother 1 more than 2.
This game despite its very glaring flaws, I love it. The Live House scene is definitely one of my favourite scenes in this entire series, All That I Needed Was You is just such a good song. The game has some moments like this which really elevate the game for me.
i agree with the pixel artstyle thing...its definitely something that grows on you; i see it as kind of like what the gb pokemon games might’ve looked like on the nes since creatures inc used to be ape inc. the game has so much remake potential. it deserves it in some shape or form. its why i love it so much, it showed just how new to programming itoi's team was but they still had a great story to tell
Take: I prefer Mother 1 to Mother 2. I never minded the random encounter rate, and even some of the bad parts like Duncan's factory and Mt. Itoi. I had objectively the worst time with Mt. Itoi, breaking Eve before i climbed the mountain.
I want to play it so bad but it isnt very easy to enjoy, how can i play it? any tips of hacks i could use? ( i have emulators so i cant play the NES or GBA version )
@@plazolaferreyro3416 Probably! For to legal reasons I can’t link you to one, but I’m sure it exists! I’d recommend checking out the site Mother4ever.net.
@@MonkeyNess thanks, altought i like the fact that mother 3 brings up the topic of emulation and videogame piracy, i really love that topic. (havent finished mother 3 so please no spoilersz)
psi is at its most broken in this game out of the series tbh. Offense up, 4th-D slip, 50% shield, power shield, pk freeze gamma...pk fire omega All great stuff, except when used on you (granted not that pk fire omega is lol).
@@voltron77I’d prefer just “EarthBound 2,” as it’s what it was called at the dev building in EarthBound, and Itoi purposely dropped subtitles from the final Mother 3 to not predetermine peoples’ views of the game.
@@MonkeyNess Yeah, true, but in the official localization, earthbound zero is called earthbound beginnings so it wouldn't make sense to call mother 3 earthbound 2.
One thing nobody ever talks about is the ebb American credit theme. Granted its just airplane ride but it ends with an upbeat version of youngtown. It leaves a really satisfying ending.
3:37 I didn't realize that until now but that nails the differences between EBB and EB's soundtracks because Earthbound really does have a TON of ambience and weird noises
Mother 1 can be considered the weakest part of the trilogy, but it has a lot of incredible feats which is why I consider it a great game. The ambitions of a big sprawling open world map for an NES game, its subdued grounded story despite carrying sci-fi and fantastical elements, some of the best music put in the Famicom. It has a lot of great memorable moments, and despite moments of grinding, I still love replaying it a lot.
I'm gonna be honest, I like EBB more than Mother 3. EBB has the simplicity that I love about the series. It feels like EBB and EB could happen in my own home town. I played the first two right at the beginning of the COVID pandemic and getting to play a game that feels like an adventure with my friends when I can't actually see them just... it made me happy. Mother 3 doesn't have a couple of teenagers walking around towns and cities. It loses the charm of an RPG in tour own home Of course I am incredibly biased. EBB was the first RPG I ever beat. It's one of the first games I remember adoring. Mother 3 is probably a better game but... EBB represents something that is so much more important to me Also Teddy is really cool
The fact that there were only 4 prototypes of the english translation, yet it still got leaked gives me hope that Earthbound 64 will get leaked someday.
6, actually. At least, that have been found last I checked. I heard there might have even been up to 12 total prototypes that were made by NOA back then.
Oddly out of all 3 Mother 1 is my favorite, I'm sad no one implemented a rolling HP patch so more people can enjoy it without the roughness of the battle system.
eh rolling hp would make the game boring honestly it be too easy and as unfair as the game is sometimes atleast you have save states although it be cool if some funs design the game with that mechanic in mind
6:52 There’s a term I use for media like this, mind beast. I use it stuff that can only exist within the mind of one person and encapsulates their very being. It’s something that isn’t just another story of just another game, it’s a persons heart and soul made concrete in a way only they could achieve.
With how much you like Mother, you should try Mother: Cognitive Dissonance. It's a full length completed Mother fangame that takes place between Mother 1 and 2.
Me, watching part of this video before I finish Beginnings against my better discretion and getting to the part where you insinuate something happens to Teddy: Uh oh,
the later half of the game really gives me the impression it was thoroughly playtested towards the end of development because at points it becomes extremely unbalanced even compared to other RPGs of the era with how many enemy abilities can just completely squad wipe you or how loving between areas on the map following intended progression often leads to pretty severe escalations in enemy health and damage in general. I was getting my ass kicked and I made sure to fight or even outright grind when I could and tried to manage the inventory as best as I could
I played mother One before playing mother two and while anybody who I heard make comments on the two games said you more or less don't need to play the first one and the second one so much better I still wanted to give it my own attempt. I thought there were plenty of great things about both games and I did not think that part two was a drop-in replacement that was better in every way, part one was fun and had good characters and the music was great for instance. you sound like somebody who also played mother one first lol
