We live in the country. About three years ago, the municipality decided that they wanted to meter our water that we get from wells that we had to install with our own money. It has not happened (yet) because there was such a hue and cry over it. But I am sure it will come. John Locke had it right when he said in 1690.... "Government has no other end but the preservation of poverty."

That is the difference in generations. I grew up with parents that put laundry on the line all the time. Hairdryers are the same, everyone now straightens and dries their hair everyday. I only dry my hair when I have a function to go to. Your video's have inspired me to do more of my own gardening.

Oh Vivi.... so true. Years ago I used to take the newspaper ads, make my list with prices and go to the store furthest away first but that didn't put ads in the paper. Everything on the list that was on sale at that store for a better cost, I bought it there. They also had the cheapest milk and the saving on the milk paid for the gas. Then I stopped at the stores that had the rest of my items that were less expensive. My sewer and trash bill for the next year is calculated by my average water usage for Jan - March. So I try to make sure my water usage is lower to reduce that bill for the year. I love clothes lines and used one for most of my life. My grandmother taught me the 'correct way' to hang the clothes so the neighbors wouldn't talk! hahaha She grew up on a farm. My daughter and niece still hang out their clothes! So so many ways to cut daily costs - and it is very worth it. I don't pay utilities even one cent more than I need to - it is throwing money away.

Vivi so glad you got some rain. We could use a little here. Worked in the garden last night staking the rest of my tomatoes. Thank God I finally finished. Talking about being frugal. I'm guilty! I need to try harder. I don't go crazy with spending but I could do better. One thing about it. I rarely spend on myself. I do go to the beauty shop but try to wait as long as I can before going. But I only go because of my gray hair. Thank for all the good money saving tips. ✌🏼️❤️& Happy Planting🌱🌱🌱

I'm on a limited income, (disability) so I recycle, repurpose, keep lights off when I'm not in the room with them, don't turn on the a/c or heat until absolutely necessary, buy at yard sales, thrift shops, and local produce stands, and I'm always looking for ways to either make do or get the best deal possible on things I need. Just found a couple sources close to me for free bamboo canes and got quite a bit of free portable pvc fencing that I can use to keep the local dogs out of the garden. I'm learning to can (bottle). I've been looking into getting chickens for the eggs and I've been learning what I can forage in this area. For folks in the US craigslist is a great source for cheap and free stuff as well. Don't use a lot of paper products either. And I dehydrate as much as possible. I've found once you start doing these things you find it hard to pay full price for anything again. I don't use credit cards either, it's cash only.

One of our savings is to use a small scoop of soda crystals (like the scoops you use to measure ground coffee) instead of washing powder. No allergic reactions and no artificial scents. My grandmother and mom showed me how to shop the best prices for groceries around town at a very early age. It basically came down to watching the ads in the newspaper each week. Also, they showed me how to look at the unit price instead of the overall cost. I'm surprised at how many people don't know to do that. All that to say, I don't think you're nerdy at all. You're on trend with many frugal RU-vidrs.

I've always loved gardening, but could never get anything to grow in my parents yard. When I finally moved out on my own, I had the tiniest cheapest apartment that I could barely afford. I had pennies left over for food- but it was on an acre lot behind my landlords house. They had a garden so I asked if I could grow one too behind my little shack. They said yes and he rototilled a little plot for me. I got the cheapest seed packs I could find and had green beans, cucumbers, tomatoes and basil and kale. That's what I ate that year. It was kind of scary but I'd buy a chicken when they're on sale and some popcorn. But it was so fulfilling to grow and eat your own food that you had to grow. Yes some days I went to bed hungry but it was so much fun to be kind of in a vulnerable position like that. I lost weight that's for sure but I look on those days fondly. I'm sure you will too. There's no end to frugality. And necessity is definitely the mother of ingenuity. An old cut up t-shirt was my cleaning rags that got washed and reused. Some really odd recipes happened (I wrote some down they were actually good! I.e. Polish dog kale and bean soup mmm mmmm!) Good times.

Great phrase. It doesn't work for the local shops but mysupermarket is a great online tool for checking prices at the supermarkets and it shows you a graph of prices for the last year so you can see the price hikes before the sales. We don't have a car or tumble drier either. We do sometimes struggle with drying in the winter but those little things are worth it for us both to be able to work part time

I love the smell of laundry that has dried outside in the wind and sunshine. My problem now is farmers use liquid manure on their fields and the smell adheres to the laundry making them stink. Then they have to be rewashed. So i decide drier only even if It does cost a lot.

I always hang mine outside. In winter I do the same as you and also have a rack that goes on the heater. So many people tell me they tumble as air drying inside gives the house damp. But I have been doing it for 11yrs in this house and never had damp, neither have my parents.

Excellent reminder, Vivi - those old sayings are full of good sense. "Luckily" my hair's so sparse it dries in no time :-) I haven't owned a dryer in years either, and even when I did it mostly served as a convenient surface to fold clothes! Now I have a drying rack, put shirts on hangers suspended from a curtain rod, and drape bedsheets over the top of doors (sadly can't hang them outside owing to pollen allergies and air pollution).

I totally agree with all your strategies. When I lived in the UK, as an Aussie, I naturally hung out the washing on the line, but didn't realise that in Winter it would freeze! After that, I put it on the central heating inside. I've stopped going to the hairdresser and cut my hair myself. Since it is curly, you can't see any mistakes.

I may have had dirt under my nails and messy hair today. Lollll. I actually air dry my hair too. I don't like blow drying. I probably dry my hair with one two times a year. I have bangs/fringe so occasionally dry it to make it curl under when it's too long and I'm in a hurry. I used to be all about buying the cheapest but now am into buying best quality that I can afford. That's usually far from luxury but sometimes I will look for something used (but not abused) for tools or small things I might want/need. I'm guilty of using the dryer mainly bc it's easier on my arthritic. joints. I still use hair dye bc I don't like how my gray makes my face washed out looking. Your hair is naturally pretty and looks like you have had highlights put in. I do braids when mine gets a bit too long and then have my partner do a simple stringy shoulder length cut and bangs. Even if I pay for it it's such a simple cut, that I can get it done in one of the cheap salons. I'm not great at electricity saving but all of my appliances are energy savers and we use little to no electricity for heat in winter and minimal gas for our gas fireplace. One huge thing we have both cut down is clothing purchasing. There are websites for frugal people like us. Your home looks nice, you always look put together, you provide a great atmosphere for people to enjoy your company and do things that are wise when you have to spend so I think you are doing great. It's nice to see someone who isn't a perpetual consumer.

Pennies make pounds...yes, yes :) hate tumble dryers & only use mine in an emergency..usually when my son needs a favourite pair of jeans for a last minute night out..such a nuisance..lol..outside line drying or "pegging out" as we say in Lancashire is soooo much nicer but some folk are snobbish about it and think it's beneath them or old fashioned, I use a "maiden" indoors on rainy days too. It pays to be frugal & helps in a tiny way to save the planet :) Ann

Totally agree with you over tumble drier and hair dryer... I don't own either ( wash and go!)..... such a waste..I have a budget book and every penny I spend and what it is spent on goes in the book....If I need to cut down I have an indication of where cuts can be made.. must be our age... we learned our thrift cooking and household tasks from our parents... Do you all have a federal income tax? Here in the US we all have a federal income tax, some states like mine have a state tax and a personal property tax, real estate tax and taxes on everything you buy or sales tax. We are nearly taxed to death and still we have to pay high rates for medical and dental. We have to buy insurance for cars, boats, trailers, & home as well as every service you have like utilities, trash pick up, etc. Some states do not tax food but mine does.

I love your videos. Now then, the tumble dryer vs. clothesline/clothes horse.... When we "went frugal" I started using my clothesline all of the time...AND had my husband string up a long line across our covered deck and another small one in our laundry room...PLUS I bought a laundry horse for in front of our wood stove in the winter. I do use our electric dryer a little (when I am overwhelmed with laundry or it's raining) but line/horse drying clothes really saves on money, the environment, and our clothing. I have a son and daughter who live in an apartment together (college/work) and they do their laundry by hand and made a clothesline in their apartment out of the string from a bunch of birthday balloons! lol Made me very proud! They would have to use pay machines otherwise. Great video! Keep up the good work!

Hi Vivi! Loved your little chat and hearing how things are in your part of the world. I wish here in the US where I live they offered such discounts to those who live alone, or who are elderly. In a lot of places, it's not just the real estate taxes, it is the school tax that kills homeowners. A person who is single, or and elderly single on a fixed income, BUT who owns a home, pays the say tax rate as some two income family, with 6 children in the school system. And then, there are states here, where there are no real estate taxes. I just don't understand it. Hanging clothes on the line or on a clothes horse is mostly the way we dry our clothes, though in bad weather or at times like this - where the ticks are really bad this year - you have to be careful hanging out clothes and linens as they will travel in with the clothes. Have a good day, and Happy Gardening! Catherine

I shop the way you are talking about but I drive a car to the stores which doesn't take much time. I'm on a low carb diet to reverse type 2 diabetes so I spend too much money on specialty foods now like coconut products, almond flour and milk, high priced oils, etc... Not only that, I can't eat much of the vegetables I was growing including TOMATOES!! It hasn't been easy. I've cheated with the tomatoes and crumbled bits of tortilla chips for my taco salad or I don't think I could last eating this way. Absolutely no sugar. Needless to say I'm cooking most of my meals which does save money. I'm growing much more of the high fiber veg I can eat. Kale, broccoli, eggplant, zucchini, cabbage, Swiss chard, lettuce, radish, garlic. I'm growing the Cheswick and Gardeners Delight cherry tomatoes because I bought the seed before all of my diet changes began. I wanted to bottle them like you do and I will for my family. Cauliflour and Brussel sprouts need to be added to the garden. I've never had luck with them but will try next year. The diet is working. In January, my A1C test result was 10. I started this eating plan end February/beginning of March and not long after I had another A1C and it was 6.5 so I can't go back to a high carb / low fat diet knowing I can control the diabetes without meds. I'm sure my next test will be lower. So, yay! There's quite a lot of good youtube videos on the ketogenic diet for anyone interested. Look up Dr. Sara Hallinberger and Dr. Jason Fung, Eric Berg and Dr John Bergman. Dr. Axe has good herbal and nutrition videos. You being a nurse, I thought you might be interested.

Actress??? Have you been holding out on us, Vivi? I agree with the laundry drying, though we do have a tumble dryer. But it is only used for my husband's work clothes as we have cats and dogs and it is the best way to get clothes pet hair free. I do have a sheila maid in my kitchen on a pulley system. One of the things I loved about my great-aunt's kitchen in Scotland when I was a kid so I bought end pieces and brought it back with me to Germany.

@sc0ttishlass
@sc0ttishlass 7 лет назад
A Sheila maid or Victorian Kitchen Maid is two cast iron hooks looking pretty much like a coat hanger and you can put wooden slats between them for your laundry to hang and then pull them up under the ceiling on a pulley system. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheila_Maid
@sc0ttishlass
@sc0ttishlass 7 лет назад
We do not have them at all in Germany, so ppl are always a bit surprised when they see the towels etc. hanging from the ceiling. But it works best if you have really high ceilings :) It is sad that ppl don't use them anymore. It is one way of drying clothes, esp. in winter.

Things are a lot different in the U.S. In most cases, if you work, you have a washer and a dryer, even apartments have them, and they have dish washers too. I doubt that many could handle not having one. I have not used a dishwasher in over 17 years, and I have hung my close up for that long too. However, my son had to move back in with me for a while, and he just had to buy a used washer/dryer combination, and I have used it a couple times when I really needed a few things. I have to say that having nice warm sheets during the winter was a real blessing, and I made sure I could get into bed as soon as I made it, this past winter. When he moves and takes it with him, I won't be buying a new one, and I don't pay for electric here, so it would not cost me anything. I always go to the big warehouse stores and buy in bulk for my food, but I'm working on being able to can or dehydrate almost all of my vegetables. With 4 children, I learned long ago just how much food we eat and how many jars of spaghetti sauce we use in a year, so if I didn't can tomatoes, I would wait for a huge sale on it, and buy 52 jars at one time. I spend an entire year using sauce that cost me less than half of the regular price for an entire year. My son will be moving this fall, and then it will only be me, and another son, so I will go back to the year supply mode and get started on saving again. I don't use credit cards, I have no debt, and will be moving into my "Finished/ Garage/Home" either this fall, or the following summer. Then I will have no rent or mortgage, no water bill, (well) no electric, (solar) and nothing to pay but property taxes, (very low) and life insurance to put me in the ground when my life Is over. But I do hope to do a lot of gardening before that happens. What most don't think of is, if they only purchased one or two extra things when shopping, it adds up, and you can end up with months of food before you know it. it's actually fun. Before long you find a way to buy 6 months worth at a time, and then "Ride Free" for several months after that!! I'll be starting on a 2 year supply, so that I have a years backup, so I can do almost no food shopping for an entire year if I need to. Fantastic! Bless, Sheila PS Careful, you will find yourself freezing small pieces of celery, onions, etc. They add up too! LOLOL Save the small stuff (pennies), and end up with a bunch (pound)!

Tumbler dryers are not very Common were I live. I use a broom,too. I do use hair dryer!! Irons are one of the appliances that most energy consumes. With tumbler dryers you don't need to iron if you fold the clothes right after you take them out. When you dry on the line sometimes irons are necessary to take wrinkles out. I live with n a country where inflation is really bad so not only we search for good prices but we also tend to stock up when we find something cheap that we know it won't go bad. There are so many good videos on living frugal on RU-vid now. I am really happy it is becoming trendy!!

You're in an apartment in the city, people don't expect you to have a "line". Also how's your humidity I have a fan running to dry things. I have a friend who doesn't understand how to save, it's either a splurge or he does without. Hes always asking me for advice... but he never takes it. ....We were out at a store and I was buying a 2 liter bottle of soda and had a bag of candy(not my normal...but I'm making a point) we were in line and in the US at every register there's a cooler with small drinks and snacks. So he picks out a drink and a candy bar. and as we walked to the car, he remarks that my credit card never runs out and hes always broke. So I pointed out his 1 drink and 1 candy were more expensive than my bottle and candy and I got like 25 times more... I don't know why people waste money, I feel good when I can save $ . I buy whatever I like, just at the best price. ......ps: In the US we have "property tax" based on the "current value" so our taxes go up constantly and theyre based not on your house but the area you live in so if the average home on your street is selling for 300k it doesn't matter you bought the fixer-upper youre taxed higher than the value (I'm double my value). And no difference if 1 or 30 people live there, same tax.

I shop at 7 different markets that I go to when I'm in that area. I know where to buy most things cheapest. The church that I was raised in supports food storage, so I buy sales and cheapest. I have a clothes line, but we have to wait till about 1&1/2 hours before sunset or the clothes are crispy brittle from our uv levels. We used to dry all on the time, but our clothes kept wearing out too fast. We also have a wonderful clothes drying rack for delicates in the house. I get a haircut 2x a year. I gave up coloring as new meds don't let it take color anyway. All my red is now grey...oh well I still have the ginger temper. I don't usually wear makeup because it's very expensive and really a pain I don't have time for. I use natural soaps I make myself and buy natural shampoos and conditioners( cheaper than salad but not the cheap detergents that ruin hair). Our property taxes are based on when we put house through escrow. Our water is on meter, as is all of California. We prefer it as it's cheaper than before meters averaged over the year than before meters even with several increases in rates. We do buy some kid foods for our kids, crisps and such, but mostly we buy ingredients in bulk as it's cheapest. Homemade pizza along saves us 75% of eating it out. The garden gives us loads of our summer foods, but we share rather than preserve most of the excess, because we can actively garden about 10 out of the 12 months and harvest part of the rest. We still buy fruit and veg if it's in season in the area and things from out of the area for variety. And we're not vegetarian, (sorry.) but we are careful and respectful of animal protein and usually not more than once a day or less. We're trying to go down to 3x week for meat, but kids are resisting. We supplement with cheese, milk and eggs. Once chicken start laying that will help, especially with baking. We spend time in the garden as a family. It's exercise, cheap food, and a great way to be together. Same with cooking over the fire pit hubby built from all recycled items we had lying around the house and yard, except the $14 grill cover. We cook outside as a family, spending time together and don't have to use air conditioning to remove cooking heat from house. Kids are loving it as the get to help cook and scrounge the yard for kindling. Cheaper than going out and spending money. We just gather veg from garden and the rest from the freezer. Another way we save money is to do outings in a Euler circuit, thank you college math class. We see where we need to go for appointments, school and other mandatory trips and add in stops along route so we save fuel in the car.reusable freezer cool bags with recycled ice packs keep it cool till we get home. It saves about a tank of gas every 2 weeks on average for us. Hubby also uses bike for quick trips out for things like milk or little bits at the shops. Final way we economize is to pay cash rather than credit. Saves us a fortune in fees and interest.

How nice that you should spend your 5-minute break with us, thank you! Sadly, that phrase didn't translate into American coinage in my family. Hubby has his retired-military pension but we are in our 50's and trying to live sort-of wage free. My job is so tiny that it almost doesn't count. His retirement pays our mortgage and basic bills. My growing really helps our budget and his seasonal job helps for the other big expenses. We don't have crazy high-expense entertainment needs (But hey, DO NOT deprive me of my internet access! Lol!) so if we are careful we are very comfortable. I use a clothes-horse for most of my own laundry but hubby prefers tumble-dry for his clothes and our linens. Also, I have bad allergies and line-drying makes that worse because of the accumulated pollens and pollutants. And like you, no heat appliances for my hair. How annoying that you cannot get a discount for your water-use compared to others nearby who use so much more. Hope that you get better weather soon and get to be back outside where it is lovely.

The logs are a different matter they are so expensive and as local councils are selling the logs as bio fuel picking it up for nothing is difficult to say the least. I have two large dogs and whilst I only buy premium grade food at a higher price it lasts longer as the dogs don't need as much. I really feel for you over the laundry issue here in the UK. Our houses just aren't built to make laundry easy. I remember what it was like with 4 children and a husband's white shirts plus ordinary clothes, towels ,bedding etc. Even in Victorian times, cottages had little sculleries with a copper and a mangle sometimes. Also, when we had open fires, you could leave a clothes horse by a carefully guarded fire overnight. Now everything to make things easier has gone. No separate rooms for your laundry ,unless you have one of the more expensive properties, no open fires and builders and landlords who seem to think we all have a Mary Poppins to magically produce clean clothes every day. I have lived in Sweden where people don't have many clothes lines but even the most humble home has a washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher. The apartments have big clean laundry rooms with everything you need to do your laundry in a dry warm area. They even have hanging rails in case you don't want to use the tumble dryer. The minimal cost is included in the rent. It's one of the few things I miss about living there !

Goodness! If it never rained my place would be in a jumble. I've pinched pennies all my life (maybe I should count them) and it seems when I've thought I've eliminated as much as I can, there's always something else I can eliminate. But it's a yin-yang thing. You reach a point where you do become a Troglodyte...you rarely socialize, you relax your thoughts on cleanliness due to the first point (Unless Virgo is lurking in your Zodiac..Lol!), you get lost in the garden alone with the bees and toads and damn if your nails aren't dirty and your hair's a bit a-muss. Don't we deserve a little luxury? Just a thought that crosses my mind (only occasionally..I'm quite happy) from years of scrounging and saving (I love a challenge).You know, there are way too many communities today (at least here) where they will fine you if you put up a clothesline or grow veg in your front yard. I can't even comprehend that! Keep using that broom...good for the stomach muscles; and hopefully, one day, hairdryers will be obsolete. Oh by the way, henna is great for your hair. It comes in colours from clear to foxy-woxy, it thickens the hair shaft and you can grow it...and be a Ginger! www.hennapage.com/henna/encyclopedia/growing/houseplant/ Hope you got your back taxes back that they took from you...and you don't want a meter; they send out bad vibes that mess with your head! Please allow yourself a smidge of luxury; you deserve it. I'll shut up now and get back to my cleaning (It's raining here too) Hope it's cleared up there....Much peace and love. :)

I don't understand. In the US, we all pay for our own water? Like I pay the water company $150 as a deposit and then $75 each month? Is water communal in the UK lol?

notforprofittho there are different ways of paying for water in the UK. Most water is provided by a water company, you can either pay a flat rate every month, regardless of usage, or you can have a water meter and pay for exactly what you use. However, these payment methods usually apply to piped water processed by the water companies. If you sink a well yourself on your own property, it seems wrong to be asked to pay for it.

notforprofittho , I am in the US and have private well, so no water bill, but of course pay for electricity that pumps the water to our house, and any maintenance.

Why don't you have a clothes line on the allotment

I've thought about it often.......but am usually carrying enough backwards and forwards that I wouldn't have room for all my laundry. ;-)
