What do you think of Proton Pass!? I agree that Pass is still trying to find its edge on the market, and they have to do it fast or lose relevance. Interestingly, Pass was announced around the same time that passkey was being rolled out by multiple platforms (i.e. Google, 1Password). I think Proton got caught off-guard by the market shift, but this is a great opportunity for them to enter the passkey space and carve out an edge ASAP.
I don’t mind half baked stuff so long as they release upgrades consistently or provide a road map. This way I can learn the new features with everyone else. But as of now I like keeping my stuff separate I just wished they gave us the family plans on separate plans like the email rather than only the ultimate. Cuz I use Synology drive, IVPN and 1 pass and I like how they work and haven’t been convinced by anything else yet.
This is a really interesting product. I am glad Proton is slowly starting to integrate their suite to the product line. I will be interested to see how this--and the Proton suite in general--will evolve within the next 1-2 years. Also, I love the transparency you have with the community on here. Thank you for that! Keep up the great work!
Proton Pass is great. Its simple, clean, works. I'm enjoying watching their product suite and brand grow - it's perfect for capturing de-googlers, like my boomer self, and theres plenty of us
The email alias integration reminds me to the iCloud+ Hide my Email feature, that integrates in the same way that the Proton Pass does, but the difference is that iCloud integration only works on Apple Devices.
Henry, as usual great video. I have 1Password but I also have Proton Unlimited but I am not sure about Proton Pass. 1Password is so far ahead of the game and something I use a lot is the option to add a file (like a document) to a vault and there is no option for that in Proton Pass ...... Also, with Proton, it take years to get anything done. I am even thinking of leaving them all together but i like the fact that they are open source and have end to end encryption. If i get a paid email service, VPN, Cloud storage separately, its about the same price as Proton Unlimited
I am a paid subscriber of Proton and even if Pass was better than competition I would not use it. Why: If for any reason I lost access to my Proton account I would lose my passwords, my main email account, my main calendar app and my backup cloud storage. I don't want to put all my eggs in the same basket. It's not worth it just to save a couple of bucks a month. But that's just my opinion
A Proton app is barebones and lack basic features? *_WHAAT?!_* _No..._ ...ok, I'm done being a dick. But, you know... it's kinda true. :| I'm getting kind of annoyed with the Proton ecosystem. Because the more they add to it, the more what still hasn't been added sticks out. It's great that Proton is expanding and so on, but everything but Mail feels incomplete. And therefore, the ecosystem feels half-baked. _Because it is._ People keep asking about it, I know, but again: Where are the Proton Drive desktop apps, Proton?! Come on! ;-;
@@techlore tbh and to my surprise, it worked well on the Microsoft Authenticator app (also has a password mgr, 2FA, etc. options), so apparently, it's possible 🤔 (Not like I'm recommending it... long story why I used it (had to and not anymore))
Proton Suite is great. Seriously, Proton should make a desktop, Mac, iOS, Android, and Debian version of their app because web apps and extentions are a huge setback for productivity.
1 EUR even if only for the aliases, with an email not using Amazon SES, is currently a compelling offering. I plan on using this in tandem and in near duplication of my bitwarden vault.
Pretty much only complaint so far is no credit card entries. Otherwise I feel it's similar to bitwarden. The reason I'm using it is that I already have a full Proton subscription. I also like the email alias feature
I kind of wish Proton would work on making their existing offerings better instead of making new things. There really needs to be drive integration to calendar and mail.
I'm tempted for the very simple reason that the mobile app is written in Kotlin instead of Xamarin. The extra seconds it takes for Bitwarden mobile to load actually bugs me.
You keep saying Proton Pass is a browser extension but it’s an app too! I’d love to use Pass but like the Proton Calendar app, I can’t get both to work as my data won’t transfer over!
Im a keepass person, and also a proton unlimited user, but im glad this exists, i know this is going to be good in the future. Also, i think they released it half baked because of the hack and they wanted to get that migrating audience immediately
Quite frankly I don't give a damn about Proton Pass. I'm tired of waiting for Proton to rollout crucial missing features to their core Mail product. I get that developing privacy-centric solutions is complicated but if you have the resources to rollout VPN, Calendar, Drive, purchase & integrate SimpleLogin, and now Pass there is literally no excuse for allowing Proton Mail to wallow in mediocrity for this long. I've been a paying subscriber to Proton Mail since its earliest days but I'm growing tired of waiting for them to do the bare minimum. Calendar, Drive and Pass all represent the bare minimum of what you expect in those product categories. Proton can only trade on the "privacy-centric" thing for so long before people tire of constantly waiting for basic features. Proton Bridge saves Proton Mail from many of its inadequacies. Calendar, Drive and Pass have no such a crutch. Rolling out Proton Drive, without sync clients, on every platform, borders on incompetence. I'm beyond frustrated with Proton.
All incredibly valid, echoes a lot of the complaints I voiced in my previous Proton review. While I still have a lot of appreciation for what they’re doing, it’s extremely frustrating to be a paid subscriber and see so little progress being made on just ironing out the basics
I've been a ProtonMail subscriber for 2 years now, and it is my primary email system. I have the "Unlimited" package. So what "crucial missing features" are you looking for?
@@Musings-From-Mike Being able to add a Protonmail account to any email client on any platform without needing to use Proton Bridge. Being able to sync a Proton Calendar to any other calendar service.
Are those basic integrations to email clients and calendars difficult to do due to Proton security architecture? What other secure email platforms provide such integrations? Tutamail?
I think I will stick with S.E.S.. When I watched the Proton video on it I was okay until I felt the way you spoke of. I like the SES on my phone which I back up every week just in case I forgot that I entered new PW info. Excellent video. As we say in Texas; y'all be safe. ( y'all can mean one person or many )
love the video but has to say he criticised proton pass and said he uses something else in sponsored video and proton even aproved it. The reason why I trust proton ❤
I don't think he needed approve from proton to post this video since he didn't receive any money for this but just an affiliate link. Though I have to say that I was happy to see an honest opinion despite the affilate link, very genuine
A good deal is going: proton pass offers 80%-off, on the 1 or 2 year plans. That includes unlimited email alias cration for 12 and 24 months (monthly 1 USD/EUR/CHF)... that is now the cheapest way for unlimited aliases compared to simplelogin (30/year [20 at blackfriday]), or anonaddy (pro, 3 per month).
I just to proton switched from lastpass. Lastpass is my only comparison, but I've used it since 2008 or so. I chose proton becase I already use some of their other products like mail. I think it's already improved since this video, with more improvements on the way. They just added credit cards. The functionality I like compared to lastpass is integrated 2FA and email aliases, which allows you to not give your real email address out if you want.
Same here, I found new proton pass useful with unique features. Most people I think already used to 1pass or bitwarden, which is feature rich compared to proton pass. But Proton may be able to deliver a compiling product other than Proton mail in this case.
Isn't it bad to put all of your eggs in one basket? I am sure proton drive or proton pass are excellent services. But if I am using their email service then I would rather not use any of their other services.
Valid stance to take. I think Proton is specifically trying to create a suite, which people like yourself will not enjoy. Others may see a lot of value in this approach though (depending on their personal preferences)
People complain a lot about the "all eggs in one basket" but let's not forget we are minority here, most people would rather have a whole ecosystem than 20 different services and subscriptions, and for the record, I would rather have them in privacy and secure ecosystem than Google's, Microsoft's and other.
@@jeremybyte i give you that, but you have to remember one thing here. Privacy aside, google and microsoft ecosystems simply WORK. protons suite and drives and whatnot do not. and the ''most people'' you are talking about here dont even know proton exists. because those MOST people want something convenient that works therefore google/apple/microsoft. most people dont care about privacy so most people you refer to dont bother to set new stuff up to begin with. thats how most people are. and the others use proton mail but dont need a half baked suite. so now tell me: what would be the more logical step here: 1. fix and make the existing stuff better for the allready customers to enjoy and therefor also bring in new people in their family because they tell them about it. or 2. Try do build something half baked for a target audience that does not care about privacy anyways. im sorry, i dont like google or microsoft but you simply cannot compete with them on their own ground with suites and alike.
@@jeremybyte I only use Proton because it's one account I have to manage for Drive, VPN and a password manager it's very convenient for me I personally trust Proton more then both Google and Microsoft I also think proton is quit convenient for my needs I can have all my accounts passwords and 2fa codes backed up in the cloud in one place and won't have to worry about losing them etc
Thanks for a highly informative review :-) My question on Proton Pass is a generic one with all password managers: What if a compromise/weakness is found in a password manager? Wouldn't *all* my passwords be exposed? Wouldn't the use of a password manager thus amount to throwing all my eggs in one basket? It is really encouraging that it is open source and must obey Swiss privacy and all, but in the long run, all software will eventually get exposed. Any comments please?
Nice review but I just need to correct one thing: you said that Bitwarden is not offering the integration with SimpleLogin, AnonAddy etc, but they do. You just have to put your API Key once and then when you create a new entry you click on generate next to the username field
I said bitwarden *does* offer the integration. And I show their blog article covering how to do it :) “it’s not something bitwarden doesn’t offer” I believe is how it’s phrased - which means they do offer it
Big Proton user. With that said I am just as annoyed with Proton not integrating Simple Login with Proton mail. It makes using Simple Login not so simple and can be annoying. Its equivalent to being out in the ocean and not being able to drink the water. Privacy and security brings us to Proton. It is the utility that can keep us or lose us. I may try the password manager only for the Simple Login feature. With 1password still being my goto.
I just pay for Proton Mail, and over the weekend I found out that I am not eligible for Proton Pass Plus because Proton doesn't allow bundling subscriptions. That means I have to upgrade to Proton Unlimited just to have access to Proton Pass Plus. Not gonna happen. The Proton suite is sub par.
One draw back of proton suite is "putting all your eggs in one basket", a single point of failure. I wonder how reslient they are incase of breach? Are all their services E2EE?
I still am using Bitwarden even though I’ve been a proton sub for 3 years cause the auto fill on iOS as well as desktop doesn’t work right still, fix that, and they have me.
I'm baffled by the transition from the old saying "Don't put all your eggs in one basket" to the current approach of trusting everything to Proton. While they emphasize privacy, I believe it would be wiser for them to distribute costs among individual services and provide a bundled option. My skepticism about Proton grew when they acquired SimpleLogin. Personally, I disagree with their current direction, and I prefer not to use any of their services.
Compared to other password managers, Proton Pass stands out when viewed as part of the Proton Family. It's really about Privacy and Pass (and Email Aliases) is a bonus. "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts". BTW: If you're not using Email Aliases... you should give it a try, highly recommended !!! Privacy.: Not being a Giggle Product.
I started with Proton years ago when mail was in beta. I'm still a paying customer but find how long it takes them to release, and update, products ridiculous.
Too many missing features. No family accounts, no sharing, no desktop app, no web app, no passkeys, no 2fa scanner, no copying items, no custom fields, no item history. They shouldn't have released it at this stage. I doubt they will enable all these features any time soon, if ever. 1password has all these features and with the family account, it's about the same price as Proton Pass per person. The price for Proton Pass is low but only until end of July. Why would anyone buy it at the regular price? 1password is closed-source but it wouldn't be used by major corporations if it wasn't properly audited.
What happens if Proton mail gets hacked? Would it open the door for all of the Proton Services to to be hacked at the same time. I do use regular proton mail but scared if there was a breach then someone would have access to my passwords, vault and email. My current setup is protonmail, bitwarden and a seperate VPN service.
Excellent commentary. Full disclosure: I don't use a password manager...I cut'n'paste from a text document, when necessary. I have looked at various password managers and I find them all too complex to set up and use. However...I'm also a Proton user, so I'm going to look at this product and see how easy it is to set up, and how easy it is to use. Also -- I'd like to see some comment on how secure the password management is on various browsers, particularly privacy champ Brave, which is my go-to for browsing. Good? Bad? Some mix of good and bad? Just forget it?
I don't use a password manager...I cut'n'paste from a text document, when necessary. -> Wow, seriously? How secure is this? I am not even talking about the comfort here...
Yeah, hopefully you’ve encrypted that document in some way! If not, definitely give Proton pass a try! You could probably have a big gain in security and convenience at the same time which is rare. Best wishes! 🎉
The ProtonVPN Linux app is absolutely terrible so it's disheartening to see them developing these new services while the Linux app is in its current state. Also, I can't find the source code for any of the browser extensions in their repo, only their IOS and Android app. Any idea when this will be open sourced?
@@XDMIIIIIIIII I did it months ago and they are not bothering me, I honestly have nothing bad to say about Keeper company. (Except that it's a bit pricey)
I had high hopes for this as I enjoy their platform however this service just fell short. Between this and the Proton Drive being all but unusable do to extremely slow upload and download speeds. I’m losing faith
Why do all these virtual 'manager' thingy giving people the option of storing every data that they owned in 1 spot? Easiness.Yeah sure. But a single point of failure? Thanks but no thanks Proton.
Why would they do this? Bitwarden is already better in every way possible. Proton Pass has nothing to offer other than enticing people to put all their eggs in one basket. And the fact that my money is going toward a service nobody needs or asked for is making me wanna leave their ecosystem. Seriously Proton, you’ve been working on this instead of the Drive desktop client?
i m still quite new with proton mail and in the transition phase of moving everything over from like 15+ years but i m allready upset about that. i m in here for a mail provider. i can see mail provider and could storage work together, thats a handy thing also for work. but it doesnt even work. proton drive is pretty much unusable, proton calander is whatever. everything besides mail is an early access unfinished beta test.. and instead of fixing that stuff first they allready introduce something else NOONE asked for? its upright stupid and i did not leave google just to jump into a new ecosystem or suite. i dont want or need that and its pointless. 99% of companies use microsoft office as a suite anyways so you have to somewhat adapt to that. i cant go to my boss and say: oh yeah but can i use this open scource suite noone knows about instead? NO i cant... i have to use that stuff because thats what all companies are set up for. i just want a secure and nice email provider and something to store some stuff online thats not google or microsoft. thats it... i dont want a new ecosystem.
@@MaybeTiberius Well, if you wanna avoid Proton Mail you still have a lot of other secure options for personal use. This is really dumb and concerning. Look at what Thunderbird is doing in contrast, they recently asked the community for ideas on how they could integrate their email client with LibreOffice to make their client more useful. Rather than reinventing what’s already good and well established they communicated with the community and started to work with other open source projects. Proton is giving me more and more corporate vibes each day. We oughta be weary.
Not sure why you rarely, if ever, mention NordPass. Putting that aside, I use Protonmail and their VPN. Not sure I want to use another of their products since it means if you lose one you'll lose them all. Not sure I see the lack of a desktop app as a down side. It simply cuts down on bloat. It does probably mean that it's cloud only though, which would've been a valid aspect to mention.
Proton pass is useless, i had it on my premium account, set it all up and once i downgraded to the free account Proton pass locked me out of my 2fa accounts?? Now i cant even log into my Proton account to upgrade. Stick with Bitwarden or 1Password
This means you either have your passwords all written down on paper which can easily be lost or damaged, saving them to a file on your desktop (hopefully encrypted), or using passwords that you can remember (hopefully none are identical). With the manager it can create very complex passwords, locked under encryption, a master pass and 2fa, and easily switch between systems when required. The only down side to most of them is that they're often cloud storage vs local, but that's also the factor that makes going between systems easier.
thats simply not true. if you setup and use something like bitwarden correctly, it is way more secure. 1. you can set it up in a way neither you nor your password manager knows the full password by first letting bitwarden create a password and save and then you add like a number pincode onto that password in your account that only you know so when bitwarden autofills, you cannot login because you need to manually add your pincode ontop of it. and if someone would breach your masterpassword they still cannot login into anything and you have time to act. its basicly an analogue offline version of 2fa ontop of 2fa 2. plus 2fa or a physical 2fa key like yubikey 3. plus alias accounts through simplelogin for example so you can have a different email for basicly everything and never expose your real data to anyone. tell me: how do you manage that online with just a piece of paper? and how do you encrypt that piece of paper? do you have a big safe at home where another safe is in in case that safe gets stolen and every time you wanna log in spotify or your email account or whatever you go downstairs opening 2 safe's and typing a 20 ish long random password into your pc and locking your safe again?
