Got the same exact version (1986, brown cloth, 1 exit) for like 150€ some years ago. Now these things are all between 200 and 500, expecially the "brownies" which are pretty rare and look stunning.

Yep. Just got one yesterday, a 1985 model with the brown cloth, looks and works great. Sounds amazing, but I paid $210 for it, and that's a low price these days.

You should check out the Peavey XXL. It is a Transtube amp based on the Peavey Bandit, and aiming to be a solid-state version of the XXX. It ended up being more like a solid-state 3-channel Mesa Dual Rectifier IMO. Criminally underrated amp.

I think the TS9 was the best boost for this one. The Mud Killer was like turning off the Balls switch. The last one was pretty good, but the TS9 preserved the lows the best. Especially when you busted out the Tele. But yeah, great demo as always.

What do I think...? Well, I got 1st one, exactly the same look (brown grill), right before they priced up. 2011. It was my 1st amp, and I really hunted for it, for maybe a year. Now I own 3 of theese ;)

I grabbed a valve state head from a pawn show somewhere off in the middle of random ass town America (don’t try to look it up lol) for like $90 back in like 2006 or something. I don’t think I even played it except to check that it works properly. It sat in the corner of rehearsal for a couple years. Tbh I have no idea what ever happened to that head. I may have left it, I may have sold it. Who knows. But I never even really gave it a good chance to know if it even sounded good. Fast forward many years and I find out that amp is sought out and highly regarded. Haha oops. I’ve done the same with many pedals too :/ original big muff, original fuzz face, just to name a couple.

A cool trick with the valvestates is to turn up the fx loop knob all the way, then turn the fx loop off. For some reason it tightens up the mids and makes it a lot less flubby.

I bet this little amp hooked up to a 4x12 or even at 2 x12 with sounds sweet, I saw a video where this guy converted a little Fender Frontman 15w solid state combo into a head unit and ran it through a 4x12 and it totally changed the sound of that amp for the good.

love these amps, the Mosfet Lead 100 is also killer, basically a solid state 800, I think they sound better than the Valve states, and the early Valvestates sounded pretty good (VS80/100 etc)

It's a giant noodle session, but on some occasions, it kinda sounds like I know what the hell I'm doing lol! Kyle I been a fan of your videos for a while, I like the same kind of music as you and I need your opinion please. I’m a poor guitarist who finally has a couple hundred bucks to get an amp for bedroom playing not gigging, should I spend $230 on one of these as my only amp or what other amp should I consider? Thanks?

I personally wouldnt. With that amount of money, playing high gain stuff, look for a Peavey bandit! Much better bang for buck, way more gain, and more features

Damn! Kyle thank you so much for responding I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it. There’s a guy near me who has a Blackstar HT5R and he said he doesn’t feel comfortable listing it for sale because it has an issue where the volume drops in and out. He upgraded the speaker to a Celestion Greenback and said if I want to try to take a chance on it that he would let it go to me for only $75! Dude it could just be a faulty tube or dirty pots, should I take the chance? That’s a damn good deal! Ugh, so frustrating.

I’m gonna take a chance on the Blackstar HT5R (with a Celestion Greenback) for only $75. I can buy a can of Deoxit and a new 12BH7 tube to replace the old one and replace the 2 12AX7 tubes with new ones I already own. If I get it to work well again then I’ve got a cool amp for the bedroom. I’ll find out Wednesday or Thursday. Fingers crossed.

Hey Kyle, I was wondering what your thoughts are on the Peavey XXL. I own an XXL along with a Triple XXX and a JSX. I have been playing each of them over my Mesa Oversized Cab. It sounds like to me that the XXL holds up quite well against the two despite being solid state, almost way too good. Am I just going tone-deaf or what?

Also: Marshalls are very pickup dependent. The jump from the passives to the Fluence was an entirely different experience. Most Rectotone circuits mostly sound the same. Marshall? To give you an idea, Zep Sabbath ACDC and Metallica/Slayer/etc all played through basically the same amp at one point. You can do March of the Fire Ants or La Grange at a few knob twists.

This particular amp doesn’t sound good at all to me, it sounds like it’s coming out of a cheap alarm clock 📻 That said I have the head version and it’s sounds killer thru my go to 2x12. I’m not sure why this one sounds bad cause that greenback should be a good speaker, I can hear the same tonal structure just doesn’t sound right. It’s got to my ear a crackly blown out sound. Like if someone played a really cool song cranked up on their phone. It’s weird I wouldn’t think they’re would be that big a difference but everyone’s ear is different I guess. Keep up the good work man I really like what your doing!

you wouldnt pay 200 for this uk made amp when a spider is 200?😂 they are more now this is about as close ax u can get to a jcm 800 without tubes this and the mosfet sound alike i bet u would now this amps loved sounds like a jcm 800 more than the tube ds1s do
