I really want Thrawn to return. He’s a better villain than the entire First Order. Star Wars would greatly benefit from having him enter the picture again.

The thrawn pincer is my favorite thing he does. It makes creative use of technology and is tactically fun with being able to warp in extra ships wherever he wants. If there was a strategy game the implemented it I would bring an interdictor or two everywhere i went just to use it.

Loving theses breakdown videos! Keep them up! You should do vs battle breakdowns like for what would happen if the imperial fleet at endor battled snokes first order fleet but with the diagrams and the animation!

I really like these videos. Firstly without a doubt Thrawn is a fantastic Star Wars Admiral one of the best. But in context I think it goes without saying the new republic aren't victorious, the seniority of the officer s and pilots had been living and breathing on survival tactics during the rebellion and living to tomorrow is not glorious always but is a victory. That being said the Empire and remnants have usually been backed by superior numbers and "mysterious" reserve forces. Any time the Empire (or remnants) don't literally destroy all of their opponents in battle seems like losing. With supurior numbers, resources and with the brilliance of Thrawn added here it doesn't feel like a victory for Thrawn either. I like to believe Thrawn could literally have had the same results with half the numbers because of his tactical aptitude. Still you're kicking but with these videos keep them coming! :D

Thrawn's tactics here are even more impressive when you consider that new groups of dreadnoughts (usually two or three at a time) keep dropping in throughout the battle-always right where the New Republic thinks it has found an escape route. Also, when you consider that most of those ships had to be on their way BEFORE the New Republic started to move so they could arrive in time to cut off their escape in time, you really see how far ahead Thrawn plans and just how well he knows his enemies. The only reason the MC80 cruiser is able to get away and threaten the interdictor is because it wasn't where it was supposed to be when the two dreadnoughts dropped out of hyperspace. It was Garm's A-Wing slash that saved the New Republic fleet from total destruction. As it was, the New republic lost a lot of ships as well as the planet. Thrawn's battle plans, while brilliant and terrifyingly effective, often require precise timing and coordination between separate task forces. If you can disrupt their coordination or throw off their timing, you have a chance to escape. Though, as you've pointed out in another video, Thrawn adapts very quickly, so you'd better take the opportunity to escape instead of trying to turn the tide of the battle because he WILL regain the upper hand soon. And if you're still around when he does, you're dead! Also, I love Thrawn's use of illusion and misdirection in the book "Thrawn." It really shows how he is still a genius level tactician and strategist even when he doesn't have weeks or months to study his enemies and prepare the perfect assault.

I'd love to see some more legends lore on Garm. All I know about him is he has a big tank in empire at war

I loved the Thrawn Trilogy books! The battles were described so well. (detailed enough to give a comprehensive picture, but not so bogged down in detail that your own imagination couldn't take the Director's chair) Also, it does a great job of establishing just what sorts of assets the New Republic has in Garm. A very clever and even inventive tactical leader. (creating the A-wing slash on the fly) But who is also very attentive. While he is definately NOT on Thrawn's level, and lacks his predictive abilities, he is not someone you can trick with the same ploy TWICE. (being WAS the one to identify the Thrawn Pincer as it was about to be deployed against Couroscant.) Of course, even in this Thrawn "one ups" him. Immediately identifying the change of tactics of Couroscant's defenses when Garm is put in charge, and even accurately guessing that it was Garm whom the Republic had put in charge! All-in-all, a great way to convey, in the literary sense, that the New Republic IS powerful, DOES have very capable people (outside the central Heroes), and is NOT completely helpless . . . . while STILL making it clear that they are still outmatched!

About the A-Wing Slash, I always thought it was aimed to leave a clear attack vector for the A-Wings against the fighter screen, not against the cruisers. As far as I could understand, the TIEs follow the X-Wings, leaving a "turkey shoot" for the A-Wings, and with the fighter screen disintegrated, the X-Wings would attack the cruisers freely. Awesome video!

In military this tactic is call "the hide reserve tactic" and was used a lot during diffenrente periods of history by the most outstandings generals, also sometimes if one of your subourdinate don't know that this move is underperforming it can end very badly, see the battle o f Borodinoo

I'm a bit confused, I thought A-Wings were designed as interceptors, ie to fight and destroy enemy fighters. How effective could they have been on larger ships? I don't imagine they would have posed any real threat to the star destroyers attacking the cruiser.

While Turkana may have had a solid showing of Mon Cal Cruisers, most Alliance/New Republic Task Forces had just 1-2 Star Cruisers at their core with a number of escorting frigates, corvettes, and/or gunships. Something else to note is that unlike the Empire, the New Republic didn't have thousands of sailors lying around to man their dreadnoughts right off the bat, which is why they usually converted their dreadnoughts into assault frigates. It's likely that a number of Star Cruisers and Bel's original six dreadnoughts, along with other ships as reinforcements, made up the bulk of the New Republic ships present. The responding force that Iblis commanded may have even been the New Republic's latest iteriation of the Rapid Response Task Force.

Really, I just love Thrawn. He is such a genius and, well, he is also a bit sympathetic. Are u team Thrawn or team New Republic?

In West End Games' The Last Command Sourcebook, there was also an old Golan platform in orbit of Qat Chrystac since the first years of the Galactic Civil War. It might be possible, though unlikely, that this platform was destroyed by the New Republic.

In my opinion, Thrawn's only real failure throughout his entire campaign was to not get better starfighters produced in masse.

I gotta say again, if intradictor ships were that effective in Thrawn's fleet, everyone would have been using them. It should be that everyone knows about it, but doing so is either very risky, IE one ship might end up in the middle of another ship, or so difficult that only the most brilliant of minds can figure it out. The way it is set up in Star Wars, everyone knows about it, and everyone can do it, but noone besides Thrawn does it because... f___ed if I know.

(56th try) Hey Eck, my main proposition for a future video is more of an idea for a new series; but before we talk about that i wanted to ask you a lore/science based question. I know there are ion cannons in the star wars universe but my limited knowledge an I have never heard of or know if its even possible to ionize a turbo laser shot. I on occasion like to design capital ships and some of my designs have a axial super heavy turbo laser. I was wondering if its grounded in the star wars universe to ionize the axial turbo laser shot either before or after it leaves the barrel. I'm having a lot of fun making these ship and your videos help me find weaknesses and balance in my ships. I really don't want to design anymore around a axial ionized turbo laser if it isn't even possible. Please let me know in the comments if you have heard of anything like that or if you believe it would be possible in the star wars universe. My idea for a new video would revolve around large battles conveyed beautifully with your majestic voice and amazing story telling abilities. The series would consist of an iconic "supercapital" ship like the eclipse or the executor with a small escort fleet battling it out to the death with a second fleet with a make up strong enough to give it a run for its money. The fleet make up and size would be completely up to you; whatever you feel stands a chance against the super's. I think this could work with your current series, star ship verses, or as somewhat of a stand alone. Super Capital ships are one of my favorite aspects of the star wars universe and a combination of your knowledge, enthusiasm, voice, and story telling capabilities would make for an amazing few videos. That said, everything I've watched that you've made so far I've loved; keep up the amazing work! P.S. I loved both episodes of the "after Endor" series and would love to see them return. You are an amazing story teller!

I recommend a breakdown of the Battle of Atallon.

IMO, the Bel Iblis maneuver doesn't exactly work that way. But the result is the same. From what I understood, you engage the enemy with your first squadron, then order them to retreat on a 90° angle with the second squadron axis of attack. Then you can flank the enemy fighters and open a clean shot against the main target or just destroy the enemy squadrons, before you order the first squadron to return to attack again. I also believe there is a total of 15 units in the New Republic strike group, losing around 5 capital ships in the battle. I also believe the NR does have at least one Victory-class star destroyer on its side - maybe the Orthavan. And I also believe Bel Iblis already had command of the whole strike group of 15 ships, only backing up planetary defenses. What I also understood from the book is that Thrawn isn't there. It's one of the secondary fleets that uses the new imperial tactics. Bel Iblis is surrounded and faces an overwhelming force, very well led and trained, but still manages to force the Interdictor out to hyperspace, saving his strike group. While Thrawn is obviously a better tactician than Bel Iblis, the Republican general proves himself to be the most valuable commander on the field of the New Republic.

Too be fair, we should look at some flip sides of Thrawn as he wasn't perfect. The one art piece he could never understand from Kalee, and had to win by orbital bombardment, which he hated to do, and his final battle, which he may have lost had it been allowed to be played out I think he said in conversation with Pelleon "Sir, should we order a retreeat?" "No we haven't lost yet.", then Pellon a great commander in his own right order the retreat after Thrawns death, which being assassinated another oversight of his. Another oversight in that final battle, was he did not expect Talon Karrde and friends to show up even though he had done plenty to piss them off earlier. A final mistake was not seeing the betrayal of Joruus C'baoth, which he tried to stop by sending one of his commanders, but he was mind dominated like everyone else. Writing this out I've come to see great parallels between Thrawn and Napoleon, both were tactical geniuses, but at the height of their power they got overconfident and made mistakes.

Garm bel Iblis is my favorite Star Wars Legends character, and I like the interesting tactics used so I enjoy both the battle and the breakdown. I had never considered the idea that Garm's fleet wasn't in the fight from the beginning, or that Thrawn was trying to lure New Republic reinforcements into a trap. I never liked the fleet makeups shown in the novel though. I vastly prefer corvettes or frigates to heavy cruiser and Star Destroyer scale vessels so I was disapointed that the smallest capital ships mentioned in the battle were Dreadnaught class.

I believe that Thrawn was one of the greatest military minds not just in Star Wars, but also in all of science fiction. And this video seems to support that theory, even with Thrawn being unable to entirely destroy the Republic fleet.

The Empires and Rebels fleets at Endor vs the Covenants Fleet of Particular Justice (60 ships). The Separatists fleet at Kamino vs Thrawns blockade of Lothal.

Soooo, Thrawn lost. This was a strategic victory but not a tactical one. Just look at the outcome. Republic is outmaneuvred and outgunned with no chance for escape. So the expected outcome of this battle should be total destruction of republic fleet. And yet, they destroy lots of imperial ships and escape from the trap with a loss of one capital ship. This is Bel Iblis' genius, not Thrawn's. Plus shitload of plot armour.

You mentioned that the Thrawn Pincer will be used until the end of space warfare. Do you think there will be an end to space warfare?

Thrawn is such an interesting character. He's presented so brilliantly, and his character maintains a level of threat consistently. His death only came at the hands of his bodyguard- no one could defeat him in battle.

Make this a Galactic Versus episode: STAR WARS 2M Saber tank vs. HALO M808Skorpion tank vs. COMMAND AND CONQUER GDI Mammoth MK III I'd love to see which of theese tanks comes out on top.

HYperspace jumps in SW ARE incredibly accurate, unless you want to use the Thrawn's Pincer. In that case they become very inaccurate so you can use Thrawn's Pincer with a pinpoint accuracy :) In original "Thrawn's Trilogy" Thrawn's tactics based mostly because Timothy Zahn told him NR tactics and agenda in advance :) Every single, no matter how brilliant, or stupid maneuver he would comment "I knew they were going to do that". In new canon, at lest in the novel "Thrawn" his less omniscient and more believable.
