This video demonstrates the procedure for installing a threaded stem caster into a wooden leg. Marking the center of the leg bottom is explained, and the hole to accept a t-nut is drilled. With the t-nut inserted, a threaded stem caster is screwed into the leg.

I finished putting the casters on my new crafting table (after cutting 11” off). Your video instructed me perfectly on the installation. Thank you 😊

That was so useful! Thank you. I’ve been trying to figure out how to add wheels to my ikea table to make it a bit taller and this answered all of my questions about the process! Now I just need to buy the wheels :)

Thank you very much for the demo and explaining all the steps and name of the supplies (i.e. T nut).

Useful. The tape on the drill bit was a good tip. Thanks.

Ok, I see that this does technically attach a threaded caster wheel to the leg, but to me it seems that the only thing holding that wheel I. Place is the prongs on the tee nut. What is stopping that tee but from falling out the second any weight is placed on the wheel, more directed at lateral pressure during the process of rolling around a work table. I thought tee nuts were designed to be drilled and placed on the opposite side of the work to be threaded so that the bolt pulls it into the workpiece.

Absolute beginner here. This video was perfect. Only thing he forgot to mention is that if you have a 5/16 caster wheel in diameter, the Tnut size has to be 5/16 as well. It may seem like common sense but just in case someone gets overwhelmed when they get to the Tnut section at the hardware store.

The only thing holding the caster to the leg (vertically) is the four small metal knife cut-outs on the T-nut. T-nuts are supposed to be used on the other side of the workpiece so that the bolt tightens the nut against the wood and motion parallel to the bolt axis is not possible. In this instance, if you hold the wheel and pull the chair up, you've a good chance of dislodging the wheel. I'd use epoxy at least to stick bolt / nut on but that is a "duct-tape" solution.

How would you do it? Interested in different ways of doing things. Thanks
@rumeyjiffrey5485

I’d use a proper socket that is meant for casters and fit it in so it’s tighter vertically. The other solution, suitable for a workshop environment is to have a bracket that fits over the tip of the legs.

Thanks for the Video, casters is what I'm installing in an old Oak desk chair, but I might have to go to Thread Inserts, as the holes have been wobble out and the T-nuts won't work. But you video gave me an idea if the Inserts won't work. Thanks. Good Video.

You should be using threaded furniture inserts instead of T-nuts. With a T-nut if the caster gets caught up on something while the leg is being lifted vertically, the entire assembly will come right out.

I have a caster with an m6 size threaded stem with the corresponding t-nut. What is the diameter of the hole that should be drilled to account for enough space for the t-nut, but not too loose that the threaded stem might have too much wiggle space in the hole? What is a good rule of thumb?

Nice video, can I ask why you use the smaller drill bit first before using the larger one? Why can't you just go straight in with the 3/8
@samsmith6169
@samsmith6169 Год назад
If you try to drill the larger hole first, you run the risk of the wood leg splitting. Drilling a smaller hole first helps avoid that.
