Thank you for this demonstration!!! I have a Bernina 718 and this was the closest that I could find to what mine looks like for threading again and adjusting, after not touching my sewing machine for several years.

Hi...I found a threading tip, on RU-vid, that works like a dream....seeing that the needle and parts behind it are all silver, it's much harder to see the needle hole....this is easily solved by putting a piece of white paper behind the needle....I've used this alot it really does work....just thought I'd share
@mepnel
@mepnel 2 года назад
This is an excellent tip. I am fortunate that quite a few of my machines have a white painted area on the presser foot for just this reason. You can of course paint your presser foot with some white tippex or nail polish for the same helping hand. :-)

Oh wow, that is amazing. I adore these old machines because the mechanisms are so robust and simply and very little can go wrong and when it does you can fix it and know she will be purring again in no time...unlike modern electronic machines! Enjoy your new beauty and remember to give her a nice name too. 🙂

I have just borrowed a benina from the school where I teach, to make something for my new kitchen. Having not used one for 35 years since I left school, watching your instructions brought everything back so quickly. Hope trying to make my window seat cushion covers goes nearly aswell! I think the one I have brought home can definitely be classed as “vintage” but then perhaps so am I 😀 Thankyou for sharing

The stitch length lever, when screwed in at desired stitch length, also constrains the lever in the up direction (reverse stitch) so all you have to do is flip the lever up and down against the stops to ensure your stitches are the same length forward and reverse.

Great video. I got one of these myself on eBay and it does run like a dream, but required diligent maintenance, always oil your machine before starting! The one issue I had was that after it had been plugged in for about 15 minutes it started to run on it's own without touching the foot pedal! I traced the problem inside the foot pedal and the original 'oil and paper capacitor' in the foot pedal had burst, easy enough to replace with a modern ceramic capacitor that will last several lifetimes.

There is a thought that you should always have the presser foot up when you thread the upper thread, or else it will not go in between the tension disks. With a bit of luck the thread will slide into the tension disks if you pull it after having raised the presser foot later.
@mepnel
@mepnel Год назад
Hi, this is absolutely correct advice and what I tend to do is have the presserfoot up until I get to threading the needle and that’s when I will lower the presserfoot. All the best. Michele

@mepnel
@mepnel 3 года назад
Hello Isabel and what a lovely machine you've bought yourself. I suggest if you can buy Schmetz or Organ needles for any machine. If you can't get these ones then ask around the Chilean sewing communities for the best quality you can buy and get those. It is always worth it. Also remember to use Universal needles for most of your sewing but change to Jersey or Microtex needles for stretch fabrics and of course Jeans needles for very thick fabrics like denim or leather. Good luck and happy sewing. xx

@vaerner
@vaerner 3 года назад
Hey! Just noticed your comment, pretty sure it relates to what I wrote about in my comment before I read yours. I think the problem you have is that the capacitor inside your foot pedal needs to be replaced (the paper and oil ones only last so long and these are over half a century old!). In a pinch you can just cut the capacitor out of the loop but I would not reccomen that as that may shorten the lifetime of your motor. I can't remember what the required faraday ratings are on the original, what I can say that I replaced mine with "0.05uF 50nF 500V X7R DISC CERAMIC CAPACITOR" on eBay, cost me £3.70 incl p&p a few years ago. Hope that helps!

I’ve sent you a link to a different RU-vid channel which does some oiling of this machine -if this isn’t enough for you then please just search for Bernina 707 on RU-vid and there are quite a few videos out there already. If you feel none of these are suitable then please give me a shout and I will do a little video on the basic maintenance of this particular machine. Thanks for the compliment about the accent -yes very well spotted I am from South Africa and I’ve lived in the UK for 22 years but the accent hasn’t gone! Have a wonderful day.
