During his time as European Pressphoto Agency’s (EPA) chief photographer for East Africa, Dai Kurokawa had plenty of close encounters and near misses. He was the World Press Photo 2020 winner and has covered breaking news around the world.
In Developing News, VICE World News interviews photographers whose photos have become synonymous with important world events. The photographers relive the story behind the photos, telling their tales from the front line of battlefields and hospitals, and reflecting on their journey to becoming a photographer.

The issues in Congo are not Congolese but global issues. I’ve never known peace in my country… the more I learn why the more I realize that our wealth is our curse. What you see is a struggle for who controls Congolese minerals and this struggle has been going on since we fought for our independence (RIP LUMUMBA). It's such a misdirection to blame Belgium and the CIA for destabilizing the DRC, esp when neither has been involved in the Congo since the 1960s. If we're trying to be accurate, the 1998-2003 Second Congo War (engineered and fought by African leaders) is 100% the reason the DRC is how it is today. It doesn't help to blame bad actors from 60-100 years ago, and it lets "woke" Americans condemn and do nothing.

The connection is more complex than most people would make it out to seem. Developed African nations like Botswana are just as religious as destabilized regions like the Congo.
