My dad use to sing this to me all the time because this was one of our favorite movies when I was around age 4. He passed away 4 years ago May 1st and I am 28 years old now. I just finished learning this song on guitar so I can play it to my kids (if I ever have any.) Music is the key to the soul, thank you for the share.
That is because these 3 legends are just awesome entertainers who can sing, act & dance at A+ proportions and they are great comedians who were at the top of their game in the 80s.
Steve Martin getting jealous of Short’s singing is the perfect touch. What geniuses these guys are. The comedic nuances of these three can’t be taught. Such pros. Chase and Martin especially are absolutely unbelievable off the charts at this.
This is always my favourite part of the movie. I'm mean, sure, this movie is funny, even parts of this scene. But what sticks me is that this whole song is about two guys noticing their friend is worried and doing what they can to make him rest easier. They come together in friendship, and that's what makes it beautiful.
On the SNL 40th anniversary show, Steve Martin joked that this movie was Lorne Michaels' "masterpiece"--personally, I think he was right. And Randy Newman's genius was front and center.
Growing up as a kid this was always a comedy song that I could laugh my head off too cause of all the animals and funny gestures. 20 years later it just has such a different feeling to it, kinda brings you to peacefulness

Miss my friend who passed away. We use to sing this song to my little brother. Cause he fell asleep 1st. After drinking but he would smile as crashed out. This was our favorite movie. Then tell him goodnight Ned. We all went sleep afterwards too.
an emotional song, kudos to the writers, the rendering, Short blows away the singers (he attempted a singing career in earlier days - a Sinatra follower). Everything about that moment is perfect. I'm a pro musician for some 50 years. met Short also J. candy at a gathering in the late 70s after a Noel Coward play in Toronto.
Randy Newman wrote the song and it's a lovely homage to the Roy Rogers song "Blue Shadows on the Trail". What a sweet, charming moment in this hilarious film. Thanks for posting!
This will always be in my top ten of favorite 80s movies wiith Ghostbusters, The Goonies, The Explorers, Weird Science, The Breakfast Club, The Karate Kid, They Live, Lethal Weapon & Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures.
my 2 year old demands blue shadows as we do a horsey ride to bed every night this vid has got plenty of use here so thanks for the share it has helped in a plethora of situations hehe
Either my dad or grandpa (or both) used to sing this to me when i was really young. I just stumbled upon this at 19 years old, and it unlocked so many fuzzy memories from childhood. Its so cool how a song or movie can really transport you.
I Love that so many people love this movie And sing this to their children or people that they Love to help them go to sleep. Or just watch this for fun.
Hadn’t watched this movie since I was a kid and randomly thought of it and wanted to watch it with my parents this weekend. We did and it was just as great as I had remembered it. This scene stuck out to me for some reason and each night since I’ve watched this video before going to sleep. Like a lot of these comments have mentioned I think I’d like to play this for my kids before bed as well
OKAY 🤯 , firstly, I would like to remark upon the amazing skills of Steve Martin, as it pertains to playing musical instruments, arranging songs, writing songs, and singing songs, additionally also producing his own music. He is indescribably proficient on banjo, arguably one of the more difficult instruments to attempt to master. I also have so much love for Martin Short and Chevy Chase. I was a kid in the '80s and my parents thought this movie was so funny because they have a really bizarre sense of humor. So I would rewatch this film over and over and over and what struck me the most was the music. Also, when I became older I saw the jerk starring Steve Martin and of course everyone knows that classic song You belong to me. However, I admonished everyone who has not heard Bernadette Peters the Great and Steve Martin sing together. It's absolute magic just like the scene in this movie. My family felt nostalgic so we pulled this movie out to celebrate a birthday a couple of days ago. This is such a good fun movie and this scene remains my favorite scene in the whole movie. These three are such super talented comedic geniuses. ❤️
I haven’t heard of this song since I was like 10. I’m 22 now. I started tearing up when i heard it again for the first time in 12 years or so. I remember watching this movie with my mom and dad all the time as kid. Wish I could go back to those innocent precious times ❤️
Been learning guitar for a year. Really into metal. Solos, ect. But I was recently back in my home town growing up, and we always watched this, and we had a guitar we never played and left. So I quickly learned this song. Easily one of my favorites to play on it.
Wish they had a reunion and would sing this song one last time. When I was a kid we were kinda poor but we had this movie on VHS so I would watch it on a cheap little TV we got from the goodwill. I would watch it everyday because it made me forget about our financial issues. I will always cherish this song, even if it’s a comedy I can’t help but get a little emotional hearing it.
Wow. Thought that the actor Martin Short that plays Ned has got a great wonderful musical voice of this song Moon Shadows of this great film Three Amigos. And the horses singing bom bom bom bom really had me in stitches laughing.😀😄👍
